Brooks Mine Tour with the Undergrond Miners (UGM), Nay Aug Park in Scranton, PA - September 23, 2023

The Brooks Mine was first opened in 1900 as a showpiece for anthracite mining during the development of Scranton's Nay Aug Park. It was permanently closed in 1975. In January of 2022, the Underground Miners (UGM) group began volunteer work to reopen the historic Brooks Mine. This included cleaning debris from the mine and retimbering the tunnels. Since the mine only had one way in and out, UGM had to drive a second opening outside as an escapeway, and for proper ventilation. New track was run through the mine, a new electrical system and lighting installed, and they held a grand re-opening ceremony on August 11, 2023. The Underground Miners currently host tours of the Brooks Mine on Saturdays from 10:00 am through 5:00 pm through November 4th.
