Alatreon without savage axe is cursed

SAED playstyle used to reward timing and phial management in base world.
    Iceborne killed the entire playstyle.
Guardpointed the final attack of a monster’s combo? Good, you’ll get punished when you attempt an AED.
Monster finally does a move that gives enough of an opening for a SAED? Good, the monster will do it once every 10 mins.
Given how risky SAED is in iceborne, it should be doing a lot more damage than it currently does.

Iceborne still has a lot of openings for both AED and SAED. You don't need to counter an attack to SAED; it's generally a punish to use during a monster's attack, not afterwards. AED is there for countering specific slow combo enders or attacks that have a hitbox at the start and persist for a while like sweeping breath attacks. Even back in MH4U G rank, charge blade never had a ton of truly safe counter > AED openings except against like Gore Magala; you either have to be tracking KO/stagger progress or be very picky about which attacks you actually counter with AED.

One of the reasons no one goes for SAED on alatreon also is because SAED has a 0.1x multiplier on alatreons elemental count, so using it likely will get you sniped and even if you trade you'd have barely done any work for his elemental checks.

This is a problem with almost every monster from Barioth onwards. They are just too fast to be using SAED or even AED sometimes, and this problem somewhat persists in Risebreak. I am looking forward to seeing what the smoother flowing AED combos and the focus mode 360 SAED do to address the CB's inherent weaknesses.

Honestly, as someone with a massive skill issue with CB, there's very few monsters like this. Probably just fatalis alatreon and the rajangs, I've been able to nail SAED on nearly everything in the game otherwise.

Really I just reserve the AED and SAED when they're down, otherwise I just use the normal Phial combo

Barioth has openings for AED and is absolutely fine to fight with guard style, but you really need to keep track of whether he is going to combo another attack or has actually done something committal, which takes a lot of experience learning how it behaves in its different states. Same for Brachy and a lot of the other MR monsters.
Rajang has been a horrible MU for charge blade forever, even back in MH4U when he was slow and had tons of exploitable openings for other weapons, because the guard/counter style is awful for actually exploiting those openings and AED recovery is too long, plus burst 2 will almost always hit his arms, and the slow sheathe time makes doing a Blanka ball manip for the free punish much harder than something like GS. Iceborne Furious Rajang is just a pile of constantly-moving nonsense and has the pin to screw over guard style even more; just absolutely untenable to try to guard him.

Hello Pyrac! I am so happy to see my request done! But I would't restrict yourself from using SA during topples and good openings along with GP for anything in between! Anyways, amazing patience and discipline during this hunt!

10:04 that specific dragon explosion actually has a smaller hitbox than the second one he does, so it's actually safe to hit his head during it with certain moves
Edit: I think the hitbox is still pretty big on the sides, it seems to be right in front of his horns that seems to be safe

Savage axe is just the better way to fight him, you can have so much more uptime on dmg and you can hit more than one leg at a time and if your good at dodging with the axe out you can get topples left and right no issue what so ever and you can do bit dmg on the head basically whenever you want. Also a little it when he transfers into dragon the hit box in front of him is basically non existent unless you are basically touching him.

Some damage only because this is probably the worst playstyle against alatreon (saed/aed) for CB

Alatreon elemental hitzone is shit anyway lol, even sword mode cb is better and easier than saed playstyle against alatreon
