just did some research for anyone interested. Vlad III did have decendants, but it seems most of his family had few kids and many died young (a lot of fratricide among the Romanian nobility). But it did continue, but the direct line from him seems to have terminated in the 1650s.
Now, it's possible that a lesser offshoot branch continued, I don't claim my resources to be exhaustive, or that there may be illegitimate decendants. But otherwise the line of Count Dracula is over.

    • @andreipop5805
      @andreipop5805 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

Actually I as a romanian need to say sometging about this.
In our languege the word dragon is the same as in english.
      Dracul however meens devil.
It is said that at their meetings the memers of the dragon order were wearing green capes with an emblem on them.
The emblem was a cross wich had a dragon under it.
The dragon was meant to symbolize the devil (the Ottomans) while the cross was meant to symbolize the Christians.
Because of that Vlad the II was named "Dracul".
Also because him and his son, Vlad the III had the same name sometimes the picture of the fouder is combined with one of the son.
So Dracula's name came from Dracula's father even thou Dracula was inspired by the son.
      Or something like this.

@@jadebell550 Arya is a fairly popular name in Thailand, coming from a Sanskrit word meaning "noble". It's also the root of "Aryathet" which also comes from Sanskrit and means "civilisation", literally "land of the noble" (I think it would be something like "Aryadesh" in actual Sanskrit and may be reflected that way in other languages with Sanskrit loanwords or derivation). I've heard of a lot of people in the west are now naming their daughters Arya after that character. I find it interesting, and also amusing that they don't know it's a name that's been in use in Thailand for quite some time and has such a beautiful meaning.

Now, gotta say, great vid. Here's some info for you.
Mercea the old, grandfather to vlad3, was a king and consecrated such. While he lived, a huge area from Danube to the Cataracts mountains was independent. After ward, the Hungarians, Ottomans combined with boyar civil wars within reduced territory.
Vlad3 held principality as a grand prince on rank with a king because he was appointed as a vassal prince by Ottoman Sultan and never consecrated by boyars and church. He did have an inaugural feast which was customary practice. Vlad3 did declare he was king, even told Hungary's king so in a famous remonstration that silenced the king. Vlad3 was named protector of christiandom and recognized as Overlord of Transylvania, and Prince of Modavia, until he ceded Modavia to a cousin, Stephen. You can tell which princes have king rights, their portaits all have large crowns on the head.

Voivode is not similar to a count or a duke but more similar to a prince/ruler even king. Wallachia(which, btw, I don't know why it got written with "W", it should be with "V" ) was a more or less independent country(those Ottomans, ugh!) until it got united with Moldavia in 1859 and formed Romania.

Francis, Duke of Teck was born in my home town Osijek, Croatia. This is why members of the current British royal family have visited my town several times already....in fact Charles has been here relatively recently again as well. ;)
But the whole idea of "Dracula" and the vampire stories was in fact a combination of two-three individuals. The most obvious one is the story of Vlad "The Impaler" Dracul or "Dracula" but the second less known is the story of Elizabeth Bathory the so-called "Blood Countess". Elizabeth Bathory was a member of incredibly powerful and rich Bathory family who ruled Transylvania at the end of 16th, beginning of 17th century. So this 2nd individual is where the whole "legend of vampires" gets connected with Transylvania. And since I mentioned Croatia earlier...the daughter of Elizabeth married Nikola VI (Nicholas VI) Zrinski who was also one of the richest and most powerful men in what was then "Archiregnum Hungaricum" i.e. Crown of St. Stephen (Hungary, Croatia, Transylvania). And also as far as I know the first historical case of a person described as a vampire also comes from modern-day Croatia i.e. the case of Jure Grando. So as you can see the whole story of vampires is not only connected to Transylvania (which is nowadays part of Romania) thx to the "Blood Countess" but also to Hungary and Croatia as well. :p

Bram Stoker actually based his character of "Dracula" on two ppl. One was Vlad "Dracul" or Vlad "the Impaler" of the Bassarab dynasty which ruled Wallachia...Wallachia being a neighboring region (then Principality) to Transylvania. The second historical figure is Elizabeth Bathory who was known as "Blood Countess" and was accused of killing young girls, draining them of blood and bathing in it...the connection with Transylvania is that Bathory family in 15th and 16th century often if not almost in succession held the honor of Voivode/Prince of Translyvania.

Do a "Who would be king of Romania" video pls.
    There are three candidates
1: Princess Margareta, who is, officially, the rightfull monarch of Romania.
2: Prince Nicolae, grandson of the deceased King Michael. He isn't on the direct line of succesion but many monarchists consider him the rightfull king of Romania. The priest of the royal family claims that Michael wanted him to succed him and enducated him. Nicolas was fired from the royal family because of accusations of sex outside martiage but the accusation wasn't proven to be true. Most Romanians believe that princess Margareta and her husband, Radu Duda (who is considered by most Romanians to be "the cancer of the royal family") were behind the accusation. Nicholas is well educated, charismatic and compassionate, and so most monarchist would support him instead of princess Margareta.
3:The last pretender to the Romanian throne is Carol Phillipe. He is the descendant of prince Mircea Lambrino, the son of king Carol II and Zizi Lambrino. Carol and Zizi martied in secret during WWI, but Carol was forced to divorce Zizi soon after Mircea was born and was also force to deligitemize him, but Carol Phillipe claims that the Romanian Orthodox Church didn't recognize the divorce as valid and so, Mircea should've been the king of Romania, not Michael I and so, he is the rightfull king of Romania. Carol Phillipe has almost no supporters but he is still a pretender.

Ooh, I wonder now if I'm descended from the House of Draculesti... I had German ancestors, Hutterites, who hailed originally from Baden, Austria, and West Prussia. They were pushed to living in Romania, and eventually Russian-Empire Ukraine, because of their beliefs in baptism as an adult as opposed to as a child, and so because they were essentially not Lutherans nor Catholics, they were continuously killed, arrested, or exiled. After a couple of updates, I have found a small trace of Romanian ancestry in my 23andMe test, and after I had my grandma tested, we found she also did have some Romanian dna, although it was only about 4%. I really do wonder who those non-German ancestors were, in addition now whether they were somehow descended from Romanian nobility. That would be an interesting part of my own history!

However, a small correction "dracul" means "the devil" and not the dragon. We use even nowdays the term dracul to identify naughty children. So perhaps Dracul comes from the fact that Vlad II was also a mean, cruel ruler. Perhaps a trait in the family :)). Nice job you are doing with this channel, keep up the good work. Actually Voievod = Count or Warlord and Great Voivevod or Prince or Domnitor( from the latin Domine) is = Duke or King to some extent. Great Voievod was the title given to the early monarchs of Wallachia and Moldavia.
Also as a side note the Kings of Romania from the Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen dynasty were also officially called Domnitor as a second title.
This only applies to Orthodox Cristian monarchs from romanian decent, except for Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen Kings.

Vlad the Impaler was, indeed, very cruel, especially by today's standards. But one must keep in mind that he did not have his own scribes to write chronicles about him. The Ottomans, however, had plenty of people documenting them and their enemies. Vlad (and also the leaders of Moldavia) were enemis of the Ottoman Empire. Therefore, everything written about Vlad, from the time he was living, comes from his enemies, who greatly emphasized his cruel punishments.

A voivode is more than a duke as understood in the western countries. Countries in the Balkans were heavily influenced by eastern political ideologies, etc.; by the middle of the XV century, when Vlad The Impaler was voivode, these ideas were already well ingrained.
Overall, they were something like grand-dukes, even though in eastern Europe, and especially in the realms bordering the Danube (modern Bulgaria, Romania, Moldova, Serbia) the lines between dukes, grand-dukes and kings were blurry at best.
All this to say that they were not counts in any way, but calling them either grand-dukes or kings wouldn't make much of a contextual difference.
P.S.: "voivode" isn't a recognized, official title. "Prince", "lord", among other few, were also used interchangeably.
