Is no-one going to mention the way the loco "bounces"? This is especially noticeable when looking at the coal bunker area, which seems to tie up with the bogie wheel not turning....
Imagine being on the footplate, definite motion sickness going on there!! Got to be half a star off of the performance for that surely?

    • @speleokeir
      @speleokeir ปีที่แล้ว +3

I was thinking the same. Obviously the issue is the driving wheels are at the front with a lot of over hang at the back. Poor decision to make the bogies sprung rather than weight supporting.

£190 for a locomotive of that detail is still a steal compared to the current steam offerings in the US. You guys have it so much better across the pond!

@@ToledoRailsBachmann USA’s steam engines are ridiculously overpriced. Their USRA 0-6-0, which has been around since the 80’s, is over $150, and their porter tank engine isn’t much cheaper. Both of those models are extremely basic in terms of detail, mechanism, and color schemes. And that’s just the small 0-6-0’s, let alone the bigger engines. We seriously need an affordable option for entry level steam locomotives here, Bachmann are too greedy to price their models reasonably.

It's a really good runner, despite those assembly issues. All that weight on the driving wheels is impressive.
    Nice collection of 0-4-4s!

One major thing I can see, is that Bachmann had greatly improved their mechanisms. Not blatantly overspeeding, good specs, good looking (unless you get close), and great performance. The boiler problem and the lining are not a no-go for me (but I'm more on the LNER black version). The only real black spot for me is the overall price. At the GBP150 mark, that would have been tolerable, but for GBP 180/190... Honestly, I love this engine, and her performance are more than good enough for an exploitation-driver modeller, but the price and the boiler gaps makes me looks twice before putting her on my shopping list, I have a DB V200 in sight for July, and she won't take her seat but, for August... I don't know. As I said, at GBP 150, I'll get mine right now. At a GBP 180/190 price, honestly... I'm already an happy owner of the 1P, and I'm not hurry to have a second one in this wheel configuration.

Thanks for another great, detailed review Sam. I’m just running in my NER green version. Just a tiny paper-thickness gap between plastic and metal boiler parts. And no sign of a different coloured dome, though I’m viewing mine in natural light. I wonder if your room lighting is a factor?
    Hideous pricing 🤦🏼‍♂️

I’m not the biggest North Eastern Railway fan out there, but this is such a nice loco. This, the J72, Aerolite and the M1 are quite splendid designs that really shine with the lime green livery.

You refer to ‘adding vacuum pipes’ - yet these are quite clearly factor fitted Sam!
The additional pipes you can fit are actually STEAM HEAT pipes so as to provide heating for the passenger coaches. Because they all hung down below the buffer beam and thus would foul a tension lock coupling (plus on the real thing were sometimes removed during summer months when heating was not considered necessary) they get included as separate details for the use4 to add if they wish.
On other locos from other companies these steam pipes may be augmented by connections for a vacuum or air operated push - pull system.

Gotta say for a second it looked like an LSWR M7 from the thumbnail. Still, it looks lovely but, the split in the boiler is very off-putting. The green NER livery is definitely more noticeable than the GNR or LNER green. It does draw a lot more attention. However, for the extreme price, it's stretching it a little. If I had to choose, I would pick the Johnson 1P for a lower price. Still, the trailing wheels having pick-ups is very impressive and unlike the Adams 02 from EFE this one works very nicely. Like it, but too expensive for me, especially that the Dapol D1 Class you showed last time only costs a tiny bit more, and you get so much more loco for the money. Still, great review, Sam 👍👍

I have got the LNER version and the BR early versions both with sound, the models are superb with no build issues.
    They run fantastic!
It’s a locomotive I have been wanting for a long time. Yes it’s a expensive, but no more than other exclusive models from Hornby, Rails ETC. ES1 is £220.
I would like to applaud TMC for bring to the market a new model which has not been done before, instead of the endless duplication we see.
It’s nice to see North Eastern region modellers finally getting locomotives for our area K1,Q6,ES1,J27, E1 and now the G5; I just hope someone will produce a J21 or J25! 🤞Especially since the sole surviving J21 is currently being restored to steam in the next couple of years!

    • @ch1970mc
      @ch1970mc ปีที่แล้ว

@@oliverwatkiss6113£280 for sound - but the way I thought about it you pay £30-£40 for decent standard Dcc chip for an extra £60 you might as well get sound and you don’t have to mess fitting the chip and adjusting cv etc.
ESU, Zimo etc are about £100 if you were to retro fit a loco.
I personally find sound adds a extra dimension when running it . The sound quality is very good too.
Yes it’s expensive, but I get a lot of pleasure from my models

  • @Jaymzhatstand

The join in the boiler isn't something ive seen mentioned elsewhere, nor noticed it on my LNER lined black version, even going back and looking at it again, it's barely noticable. Perhaps the colour has something to do with that.
The price issue is down to it being a commission, if Bachmann had done it themselves, it would most likely have been cheaper (though there are a LOT of tooling and detail variations) but a commission is always going to be more expensive as the commissioner is paying the manufacturer to make something for them, and are therefore having to buy r&d time and production slots which would have been allocated to their own projects. I'm in no way a fan of higher prices, but I understand where they come from, especially where R&D comes into the equation. It's a lot more complex than many people realise, not just a case of get a scale drawing and away you go.
I was amazed at how silent mine ran straight out of the box, smooth and controllable. The sound chip is excellent too, though a slightly bassier speaker for a bit more bark on the exhaust would have been nice.
I'm certainly looking forward to having a but of time to fit the details, paint and add a crew, and slightly weather mine to make it fully ready for service!

I don’t have any 0-4-4 tank engines in my collection at the moment and from the looks of this it looks fantastic even though I don’t really go for the pre grouping locomotives so maybe I may look into one of the BR liveried ones, decent review overall here Sam, as I have said before while exclusives may be expensive they give us modellers the chance to own locomotives that would likely not be made.

Sam, having looked at other pictures and videos of the model, I reckon you have a fault with the lining up of the two boiler sections. I still see a small gap but they are generally lined up. Plus the fit of the dome and chimney is not good as you point out. Youshould send it back for a replacement.

  • @danprice7973

Just bought one of these at full price (£190). I have to say I think it's my favourite locomotive, it runs so well and looks great. Mine had none of these defects luckily and you cannot see the join between smokebox and rest of the boiler. The only clue it is there is the weight on the front end and the dome also is the same colour. Perhaps they tweaked their design

I have the LNER (1752) version. My loco does not have any misalignment between the 2 halves of the boiler and I was not aware there were issues until watching this video. Perhaps yours is a one off, but it is still not good since it was not detected at final inspection. I can confirm mine runs superbly and has plenty of traction. My only issue was how difficult it was to fit the cab doors.

You know I love it that you dude reviews on new locomotives but when it has the detail bags in it for like extra detailing. I would like to see how it would look if the details were attached on to it. Maybe put it on the locomotive after you did your initial view of the train. So that way we will have a chance to see what it looks like with the detail attached to the locomotive.

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  ปีที่แล้ว +2

Most of the time the details can't be fitted to the model without compromising the loco's ability to run/couple, particularly if you run on 2nd radius like my layout in places. Otherwise you're right, that would be good for the reviews!

No one is talking about the vertical wobble evident with the tender end! I was laughing MAO when I first saw you run it. Yet you, and other viewers, have failed to mention it so I will.
What is wrong with it? Certainly will aid in shaking the coal pile level! 😅

Fantastic looking loco Sam. She really pops in that livery! Odd engineering choices as you've pointed out though. Joining plastics and die cast with some substantial inner volume is asking for alignment trouble due to different thermal shrink coefficients..., very commonly known in the industry... You'd be thinking that a boiler as 1 piece in plastic and a flywheel should be pretty trivial standard, providing a better weight distribution front to back as well; quite shocking that some German style priced OO locos apparently still omit a fly wheel. We wouldn't be exactly keen on the very thin (flimsy) pickup solution either (and still causing too much drag). Far better solutions have been developed for premium locos which are extremely low friction and way more solid. It is what it is, and overall, certainly not too bad. She looks popping amazing and runs well. Cheerio.
Edit / addendum: do correct us if we are wrong, but Bachmann (and also Heljan) seem to have the least of the manufacturing quality faults out of the box (usually second to none). Having seen your many reviews of Accurascale, Dapol, Hornby, Rapido..., they always have quite some issues and errors (high error rate). That's worth a price as well in our opinion (solid quality checks during production stages are costly).

  • @18EStudios

My suspicions on the massive price is due to the "exclusivity" factor and honestly nothing to do with inflation (Its just a theory, take it with a grain of salt). Historically, previous Bachmann models sold as exclusives have always had a hefty price. If this was a main range model I would like to believe it would've been similar in price to the 1P. Speaking of the 1P, it does seem as though Bachmann took criticism and feedback from said model and applied those practices on the G5, example being the "semi" die-cast boiler which omits the need for traction tyres unlike the 1P. The join between the boiler halves is interesting as my 3 (yes I bought 3 I'm insane) locos don't have that. Maybe yours is a one off? I've also noticed that yours "limps" at the lower speeds. Not sure what would be the cause of that.

Exclusive models are as close to an anti-competitive practice as you can get. If multiple retailers got together to agree a fixed price with a manufacturer, that would be illegal. If two or more manufacturers got together to agree to not compete by avoiding overlapping products, it would be illegal. Yet...

The gap between the two parts of the boiler is truly awful and very noticable. Reminds me of a slice N splice job where a dodgy car dealer welds the halves of two write-offs together.😬
Very bouncy too due to the bogies being sprung rather than weight supporting. Very poor design. I had an old Triang M7 0-4-4 with the same issue as a kid and it kept derailing over points as a consequence.
Lovely finish on the livery, something Bachmann are superb at, but too many issues for me even if it was a more reasonable price.

As regards price I agree with you that a loco should be as near perfect out of the box as possible to warrant £200 price tag. The usual pointless apoplexy in these comments, but the price is what it is and if you can't afford the model (I can't, really), don't buy it. If you really want a G5 it compares well with the price of a kit and all the additional parts needed, and it is built and decorated for you! Sam's example does appear to be a lemon and should really be returned to TMC - there are plenty of others pictured online that don't show any misalignment of the boiler. A friend is getting a BR black example and I look forward to seeing it in the flesh.

I suspect the higher price is due to the lower production run, which is snag with the exclusive commissioned models, obversely a none exclusive would have a much higher production run and thus lower cost per a unit. To some extent this is catch 22 as we simply wouldn’t get as many models and mor run of the mill ones, namely it we would be less likely to some something like this.

The price difference for locos manufactured for retailers may be for limited production runs that are funded. On the plus side, you tend to get more unusual types, all be it at a premium price. The question is, do you want to support the retailer's efforts so that they will continue to produce items of more limited interest?

Tbh with those super expensive models there should be 0 issues right out of the box, I'm willing to buy very cheap locomotives and fix the issues myself but at high prices they should be completely perfect in every way out of the box

Bachmann has produced the Double Fairley. There is no excuse for the fit of the boiler pieces. Plastic boiler with a removable internal weight would have been much better.

Hi Sam, Great review as always. I am pleased to say my example has better lining, to the naked eye it looks perfect, with a zoomed in picture there may be something similar to yours but you cannot see it, even with magnified glasses. On my example the boiler is uniform along from front to back, no difference in diameter.. There is still slight gap between plastic and diecast but they are in alignment. The dome is still a different colour however. I would maybe have a word with TMC and see if they can swap it for a one with better boiler alignment, as IMHO that's a production fault... Keep up the great reviews Sam, I enjoy them all... Oh one last thing if you want an alternative 0-4-4 pre grouping tank then the Johnson 1P or Hornby H class, are only available 2nd hand somewhere North of £200.....Its time the mftgs started to fill this demand me thinks... And a brand new one for less than £200 suddenly doesn't look quite so bad... 😁

  • @mkaustralia7136

I have been thinking about the pricing issue. Apart from the smaller production run across multiple variants, which immediately means a higher price per unit, TMC will have had to underwrite a part if not all of the manufacturing costs that Bachmann would usually incur plus part or all of Bachmann’s profit margin.
Bachmann would also have charged a fee for use of their manufacturing slot at the factory.
So the price to the initial buyers and those on preorder has to recoup that and provide an appropriate reward for the possible losses on those which do not sell in the first flush of enthusiasm for the model.
If we look at the Southern Foreland now available at £60 less than initial offered price, it is clear not all these pre-grouping locos will be great deals financially for the manufacturer.
So on balance I am OK on the price as I do not have enough to say whether a few pounds less was the right risk/reward trade off point.
Does not address the quality of course.

    It's a lovely locomotive.
However because of the lack of diecast and the Dome been a different green it is much to expensive.
It also is a small Engine for that price.
    Take care Sam

I preordered mine a week after announcement, back in very early 2018. They arrived before this video was released (although I've been too busy to watch this video for a while), and although the NER one (as per the new build) is perfect, the BR one I got (early crest with westinghouse pump) is noisy at around half speed and over (which developed during running in), so it's going back this week. Not to mention the BR one had its front half of the boiler not fitted correctly, so needed disassembly to sort that. And almost all the driving wheel pickups needed adjusting too, on both models.
I wasn't particularly happy when the prices of the G5s were announced about a year ago, but they're an important NER model that I need in my fleet. Now I'm just in need of coaches for them...

What a lovely loco, sooo tempted to pick one up t9 go with my NER E1. Going to be hard to not, I’ll have to see, as I don’t like the price one bit, especially since I would have to import it to North America. Also, I think that three star on detail is a bit harsh, but all together a great review.
P.S. did you see that Bachmann upgraded their 9F? On the Rails of Sheffield listing it has wires running between the loco and tender.

Sam was in a panic. He'd forgotten about getting his girlfriend Chloe a birthday present. Chloe's birthday was only three days away. YIKES! Talk about being a money-waster.
"Oh fiddlesticks," sighed Sam. "Why was I born with such a terrible memory?"
"Don't worry," soothed his mother. "It's not too late yet." Chloe crept up behind and bashed her boyfriend on the head, to wake him up a touch more. She gave him a mocking glare.
"Dare to forget my birthday, and you'll end up forgetting about me," the girl mockingly threatened. "Get the picture?" Sam vanished into the outside world. He'd at last remembered that Chloe had said she needed a new pair of comfortable slippers to wear. One problem: he'd forgotten to ask what size fitted her feet. He found the clothes store he was looking for, and.... oh boy ....a model shop right next door. Typical.
"Bother, I can never resist model steamies," muttered Sam to himself. He somehow did resist and bought a pair of slippers, hoping they would fit Chloe properly.
Chloe's birthday dawned. Chloe was happily trying on her new slippers. Something small and furry tickled her toes. She drew her foot back and a mouse scurried out of hiding.
"EEK!" shrieked Chloe in terror. "A mouse!" Sam quickly disposed of the creature.
"Sorry about that. AATCHOO!" Sam sneezed all over Chloe's T-shirt. Luckily, she wasn't angry. She and Sam laughed it all off. A good time was had by all.
