I found TurtleWoW a few years ago and I never committed myself to it. Now we're in 2023, and I see how dedicated their developers are to their server - it's something truly beautiful and special. As of right now, there are roughly a concurrent 1,500 players on both factions. The server is growing year after year!

Depends on the time, I checked every once in a while and it differs from 3500-6000~ players - google turtle wow and either check all infos you get there, or you download their client right away and check it out yourself - the world feels packed! I love it
Have been on Turtle for a bit and it is a truly special place. The community is what makes this game so great on top of the TLC that the developers put into every little detail. We are at about 9K population now and things are definitely crowded. It’s a double-edged sword. Places like Hillsbrad are ground zero in terms of questing because all mobs/quest areas are taken. But the areas outside of dungeon entrances are packed with people, usually with tents, and it’s a very chill atmosphere. Despite the overcrowding, it’s the best private server out there IMO.
The community is one of the strangest I've ever been exposed to in any online game in my 35 years of life. The world chat is flooded with sexual deviants and it is so bad that I just couldn't handle it.

i play daily on turtle wow, i play a mage in a larger raiding guild, today i saw the server hit just over 5000 people online at once. ive tried a few vanilla servers before and they sucked in comparison. ive been playing on twow a little over a year now and its the best server ive ever seen, by a long shot.
the tent system seems amazing, I'm pretty much over flat XP buffs like SOM 1. but actively getting rested xp makes way more sense - fast levelers will likely skip such a system, but it's a great way to catch up for casual players
Hey Jerome! Thank you for checking out my video! Yeah i agree, SoM 1's xp boost also completely destroyed my lvling/grinding guide. The amount of rested xp you get while standing under stacked tents actually goes up so fast that i'd argue it would be faster stopping to get it, than skipping it :D
You should make a video about Anarchy WoW next, please. They're a very original server and have massive never seen before content. It's totally underrated and it would be so cool to see you talk about
I agree, I really wanted to like this server and gave it three months of my time but the playerbase was so awful that it ruined the experience for me. Constant talk about foot fetishes, pedophilia, femboys, LGBTQ stuff, and weirdos in general all over the place. The GM's were also quite strange characters themselves and would threaten players for bringing up politics or real world stuff but allow people to converse about extremely vulgar subjects that I'd rather not give an example of. The developers did a great job and the server runs well and the new content is amazing but the community just ruined it for me.
I played back when we had 50-150 people. Turtle wow was more focused on the RP and community aspects. With the gameplay changes being more recent (last 3-4 years) Turtle WoW the name was coined by our founder Torta and the fact we were taking it slow and steady. We did have some Turtle Raid Bosses that are now legacy content as well as some more quests involving turtles as gags/memes and touching parts of the game.
Hey all. I played a ton during BC and basically finished Wrath but I never got into the original WoW. Was too young then. I wanna experience it for the first what server should I go to? And is it worth it? The only experience i have in azeroth was leveling to get to BC. I never raided there in classic. I wanna try it but dont wanna waste my time. Any suggestions? Im watching the video as well. Hopefully I get some cool answers
I just discovered Turtle about 3 months ago and it's by far better than blizzard. It's original Blizzard+. I hope it lives a long time. Being in this server feels like playing again back in the early 2000s except even better. I will be a long time player here. To the video creator: Wonderful video, everything was very well documented and explained. Bonus points for being in "Get Rich or Die Grinding" too. 👍
True passion for classic MMOs is from private servers and passionate devs. Just like in Ultima Online, Outlands server. So happy to see projects like Turtle WoW pick up the torch and deliver Classic+ where Blizzard failed massively to capture the vanilla spirit in SoD.
Been playing on TurtleWoW off and on for a couple of years now. I would say I have been playing it a lot over the last year. I believe it is the best server I have ever played on. Other than a couple of their GMs being oversensitive and quick to mute when it isn't necessary, the server is fantastic. The devs are just incredible. I love their custom content on top of the classic vanilla content. I can't wait to see what they have in store next.
TurtleWoW is really special. The only thing holding me back from really engaging with the server is the fact they are still using the attrocious ranking system for PvP gearing.
Turtle wow started with a lvl cap of 19 than 29 ETC.. all the way to 60. Thus the reason its called turtle wow. The Devs never expected it to get as big as it is now.

There is some world pvp buts its opt-in only, so there will be many times where u meet the other faction and you can't attack them. Other than that, I'd say it's the perfect server for someone who's new to the game
Only thing I wish Turtle WoW could improve on is the smoothness of the game. You get use to running at 165 FPS and then going back in time to 60Hz really can feel the difference.
The good thing about the new content is that it fills the leveling gaps the classic had. I never had to say damn where do go level next. And warmode people are more interested in PVE xp boost than in PVP.
i know a lot of ppl would disagree here, but i think a retail style mythic plus adapted to vanilla would be super cool and would attract a lot of people
Battle ground raids, where you help your bosses against the other faction and their bosses👍 epic solo quests you can’t be helped with with endgame items👍 skill based professions once 60 that take real skill to progress not grind. Percentage based monetary or random item loss on death. HC mode should have an epic reward for hitting cap with the option to complete the quest and go back to normal game play for a slightly lessor item. For new content the could introduce certain dungeons and raids that standardise gear forcing pure skill.
Yes, thankfully everything was saved from Nostalrius and moved to Elysium. (later on came Lightshope and Silverhand). I know that turtle wow has a backup of everything aswell. And they are also not hosted in france as far as i know, so they should be out of blizzard's reach :)
unfortunately the Group Finder without teleport is a lost opportunity for the game i am lvl 32 alliance hunter and i have access to 10 or so dungeons but i never have the chance to go and try them because of the distances ... some of those are even in other continent and guys in the maps there is only one flight path not to mention for the waiting times for boats and zeppelin well to get there i need a ton of time and if the group for some reason split then my time is lost so sadly i only have done Deadmines and Stockade tell me is this good for the game ?
This server is great for pve... but some of the changes they made to make certain classes viable in pve have unbalanced pvp. For example, ret paladins absolutely destroy bears or plate wearing classes. I mean they delete them. There is no such thing as holy resistance. The most recent change you didn't discuss is this - world buffs can no longer be used in raids. Instead, paladin and shaman buffs can stack, and the debuff limit on enemies has been increased by a ton. Overall, I like this change. Everyone wants an enhance shammy who knows how to totem twist now. Oh, and some of the 2H weps that used to be considered vendor trash have been improved. For paladins, holy hell, the untamed blade from early in BWL is practically bis now, because paladins can force the 300 str proc for almost 100% up time. Oh, one more thing... Turtle WoW was not prepared for how many new adventurers decided to pop in. The server is constantly over 4k players now, and it's getting a little laggy. They will need to adapt, perhaps creating a second server, or adding a queue.
@@shjelde660 I'd like it if they just fixed shaman like they fixed other classes. Give their water shield mana/5, give elemental shaman totem of wrath, allow enhancement shaman to dual wield, allow instant 4 totem drops, ETC. It really is the only class with two less than good specs to play for pve. In PVP, of course, WF procs can still instantly delete people, but it's luck, and completely random. If they fix shaman for pve, it will likely make them OP in pvp, but that would just even things out, considering how OP paladins are. Sounds great.

@@richardshiflett5181 They could maybe give ele shaman totem of wrath and an actual mana/5 water shield. That would possibly balance things a tad. They could also add a passive and invisible 40-50 holy resistance to all players, and introduce an engineering trinket that would reflect popular paladin spells like repentance or HoJ, or even give a horde priest the ability to dispel pally bubbles (so dwarf priest isn't the only bis race)

Looks cool! However, after getting burned with Nostalrius why would i invest in something that daddy blizzard will cease and desist. And before you say "its been around since 2018" Nostalrius was around for years before it exploded and died.
I disagree with the notion of "Blizzard going the way of Burning Crusade instead", as if somehow it wasn't the extension of Classic that it was. Compared to Wrath, many of the places and concepts of BC were already in the Classic game files and were intended to be released with WoW but there simply wasn't time or resources to do so. I don't see it as having gone a different direction like when Northrend was conceived.
@@gnarlkill1 Then its not BC, or any expansion, for that matter, thats the issue for you; rather, the design change of making any new content scaled beyond level 60. So I can agree with that. Im also not fond of how expansions always drove players to congregate in new areas and abandon the old. Basically, we want horizontal expansion, not vertical.

While it raelly sounds amazing I wouldn't put my faith in private servers. All the things you listed in the end are true only as long as creators care. The moment they stop being so active it will turn into ruin. One corrupt GM and all the trust is gone. I used to play on private servers and it was just a matter of time before there was some GM selling gold or items etc. All of these servers got eventually shut down after a while so yeah never again. Still this is clearly amazing what they did and if that was like an official server to play on I would be there already.
Yes I've seen it all, I started on feenix wow back in 2012, played on Nost and to and through classic. I can relate to you, especially with all the crap with Elysium and Lightshope. But even tho, something feels different with these folks here on turtle wow. There's some serious passion gone into this p server!

Wanted to play feral dps, but powershifting is too complicated? T WoW fixed it. Tiger's Fury is now like rogues' slice'n'dice, so powershifting is no longer required, but still possible. Don't want to farm pummelers for hours? Engineering has a rechargable pummeler you can slap a 25 agi enchant on, and you make batteries for it. Not for all the time use, you can boost your boss dps by 150 or so, or always hold threat as bear with these things. Also, excellent tank trink added with armor, stamina, and melee haste, making it perfect for bears, plus you can use two of them. * Edit - that amazing trinket I just described now acts as unique. Sad Panda.

I just found it today looks good and the half exp mode might look fun for slow burners
Turtle mode for the gifts plus warmode to get back to 1x xp.
Best of both worlds plus tents pop up often.

Should be able to change that in the config files. I run the game at 75Hz on a CRT monitor.

They will need to adapt, perhaps creating a second server, or adding a queue.
Pvp will never be balanced. This is a pve server focus.

@@shjelde660 I'd like it if they just fixed shaman like they fixed other classes. Give their water shield mana/5, give elemental shaman totem of wrath, allow enhancement shaman to dual wield, allow instant 4 totem drops, ETC. It really is the only class with two less than good specs to play for pve. In PVP, of course, WF procs can still instantly delete people, but it's luck, and completely random. If they fix shaman for pve, it will likely make them OP in pvp, but that would just even things out, considering how OP paladins are. Sounds great.

@@richardshiflett5181 They could maybe give ele shaman totem of wrath and an actual mana/5 water shield. That would possibly balance things a tad. They could also add a passive and invisible 40-50 holy resistance to all players, and introduce an engineering trinket that would reflect popular paladin spells like repentance or HoJ, or even give a horde priest the ability to dispel pally bubbles (so dwarf priest isn't the only bis race)

Did they crack down on the chat? I first joined turtle maybe 1.5 years ago or so, seemed nice. Came back a year ago and the toxicity levels were worse than the barrens and there was no moderation afaik. Very unfriendly.

@@shjelde660 I just downloaded it again. Within 30 seconds chat was filled with immature nonsense. I don't know how you haven't bumped into toxicity but it's great you haven't. I'm certainly not looking to drag anyone down. The population has exploded though.

The only thing that sucks about turtle wow is the group finder, that’s all.
If it has dungeon finder, group finder etc then it’s retail… so really turtle wow is vanilla plus retail…

I disagree with the notion of "Blizzard going the way of Burning Crusade instead", as if somehow it wasn't the extension of Classic that it was. Compared to Wrath, many of the places and concepts of BC were already in the Classic game files and were intended to be released with WoW but there simply wasn't time or resources to do so. I don't see it as having gone a different direction like when Northrend was conceived.
The fact the BC made all content for vanilla irrelevant is what Made it go in a different direction.
@@gnarlkill1 Then its not BC, or any expansion, for that matter, thats the issue for you; rather, the design change of making any new content scaled beyond level 60. So I can agree with that. Im also not fond of how expansions always drove players to congregate in new areas and abandon the old. Basically, we want horizontal expansion, not vertical.
I love I love it I love it.. but all I ever wanted was also the modern graphics and gameplay feel. Everything else keep doing what turtle wow is doing.

While it raelly sounds amazing I wouldn't put my faith in private servers. All the things you listed in the end are true only as long as creators care. The moment they stop being so active it will turn into ruin. One corrupt GM and all the trust is gone. I used to play on private servers and it was just a matter of time before there was some GM selling gold or items etc. All of these servers got eventually shut down after a while so yeah never again. Still this is clearly amazing what they did and if that was like an official server to play on I would be there already.
Yes I've seen it all, I started on feenix wow back in 2012, played on Nost and to and through classic. I can relate to you, especially with all the crap with Elysium and Lightshope. But even tho, something feels different with these folks here on turtle wow. There's some serious passion gone into this p server!

Wanted to play feral dps, but powershifting is too complicated? T WoW fixed it. Tiger's Fury is now like rogues' slice'n'dice, so powershifting is no longer required, but still possible. Don't want to farm pummelers for hours? Engineering has a rechargable pummeler you can slap a 25 agi enchant on, and you make batteries for it. Not for all the time use, you can boost your boss dps by 150 or so, or always hold threat as bear with these things. Also, excellent tank trink added with armor, stamina, and melee haste, making it perfect for bears, plus you can use two of them. * Edit - that amazing trinket I just described now acts as unique. Sad Panda.
