Bill Bob I agree with that. Mainstream media will always paint cops in a negative light, because they want to feed the negative light, and paint every cop as a thug. Just look at how they report on how, for example, how great Black Lives Matter is, and how bad the cops are. This negative narrative keeps going on, because that is what gives them ratings, which translates into money, for that media outlet.

You're absolutely right about honesty in your interviews. I applied for a 911 dispatch job for the police department and in the interview process they asked me if I had ever been arrested and I said "Yes, but not as an adult." Their eyebrows cocked and they asked "How old were you? And what were you arrested for?" I answered "I was 8, and ironically, I was arrested for prank calling 911." They all laughed out loud and after a few more questions, they each shook my hand chuckling and one of them whispered to me "You nailed it."
Totally depends on the department. Research the department you would like to pursue. However some state standards could prevent you from getting into the county or city police.

Because if you make 52k per year it doesnt mean you are a median earner in your city. In some cities 52k is fucking amazing! In some cities you are far below the poverty line. "Cost of living". Its different everywhere. Cost of living dictates a lot when you are a grownup. Job A pays 80k per year and job B pays 50k per year... But if job B is in a city where the average housing price is 200k and job A's average house is 950k... You will have a better quality of life and be wealthier living in city B making LESS money.

You honestly have changed my entire perspective on cops. Before I watched your videos and I got pulled over I would be respectful solely to try and get out of the ticket. But now I make a point to let the officer know how much I actually appreciate his/her service!
But I never have smoked marijuana... The detective that did my interview was pretty cool. Had 15 cameras on me in the interview room, but he was pretty cool. I get my badge on the 11th next month and start the academy in a few months when the next one starts.
DVJFan most do. Most actually go into field training before the academy in my state. There are only 3 academy classes a year. I’ve been on the road for 7 months and haven’t been to the academy yet.

I've been debating of signing up for the selection process to become a cop. The only thing hindering me is the polygraph. Sure I've done some shit in the past, maybe more than others, but I'm wondering really just how reliable those machines are... I'm pretty sure that they go ahead and test your internet usage in the past 5 years anyways, so yeah. I don't think I should risk it. They told us at an information session that we'd be surprised by how many people are handcuffed rather than given the job, due to undetected crimes having become detected. I used to think it was a bullshit scare tactic, but now I think it might be true. What do you think or know? Do they actually check that much into your past?
I've taken several polygraphs. Some done by private companies, others by department detectives during a hiring process. The test is flawed and it's just not accurate. You're expected to remember any little detail of anything you've ever done. Things sit in the back of your head, and you may not remember them. That will cause you to fail. If you have surpressed anything, your brain still remembers it. It's best to just think things through and give an accurate answer to the best of your ability.
***** Well, if I'm honest I'll basically be admitting to undetected crimes which altogether could add up to more time behind bars than I care to admit. It all depends on how reliable their background check is... Like, how can they prove that you did anything? It could be anyone who looked that stuff up online, anyone in the household, you could just say it's a relative that used your device or whatever. So what's the point of the whole thing if they technically can't even prove that you did it? The only way they can prove you did that shit is if you confess to it on tape.

I recently took a poly and the drug/alcohol questions came up. Im 27 and ive never been drunk/high. So thats what I said. He didnt believe me and we took A LOT of time on that section of the test because it isn't ordinary. I stuck with my story and the machine didnt detect anything so I passed. Being sober your entire life can show integrity, and it can also show a lack of life experience. How do you plan on dealing with the bottom run of society 90% of your shift when youve never even been drunk? How can you be empathetic for people you dont understand? It can work both ways - its all how you represent yourself and articulate your answers.

Officer401. I understand that yes if you go to college and get some degree in/for criminal justice or law enforcement, it will open up jobs(doors). But heres my question. I have done extensive research on working for the federal government/law enforcement/homeland security, etc. They all require some sort of college degree. However my question is can you (I) work my way up the line? Example (I start as local police then after 3-4yrs I want to work as a state trooper then after a certain amount of time Homeland the FBI then Secret Service) I hope you understand what I'm trying to say. So would all that be possible with just experience instead of college?

Currently working towards becoming a Chicago Police Officer. They have a program here where certain high school students can apply and enter the academy, and I have orientation on Saturday. You hit the nail on the head, Sir. Integrity. Even if it's painful and results in some "awarded" time off- you can never get it back. I think of it along the same line as perjury. 18 year PO here, and I've seen it over and over. If you foul up making an honest effort, my experience has been that the real supervisors will help you out from getting crucified- even during the head hunting times.

I've been debating of signing up for the selection process to become a cop. The only thing hindering me is the polygraph. Sure I've done some shit in the past, maybe more than others, but I'm wondering really just how reliable those machines are... I'm pretty sure that they go ahead and test your internet usage in the past 5 years anyways, so yeah. I don't think I should risk it. They told us at an information session that we'd be surprised by how many people are handcuffed rather than given the job, due to undetected crimes having become detected. I used to think it was a bullshit scare tactic, but now I think it might be true. What do you think or know? Do they actually check that much into your past?

I've taken several polygraphs. Some done by private companies, others by department detectives during a hiring process. The test is flawed and it's just not accurate. You're expected to remember any little detail of anything you've ever done. Things sit in the back of your head, and you may not remember them. That will cause you to fail. If you have surpressed anything, your brain still remembers it. It's best to just think things through and give an accurate answer to the best of your ability.
***** Well, if I'm honest I'll basically be admitting to undetected crimes which altogether could add up to more time behind bars than I care to admit. It all depends on how reliable their background check is... Like, how can they prove that you did anything? It could be anyone who looked that stuff up online, anyone in the household, you could just say it's a relative that used your device or whatever. So what's the point of the whole thing if they technically can't even prove that you did it? The only way they can prove you did that shit is if you confess to it on tape.
I think polygraphs are absolute BS.
What they are really hoping is that you will crack under pressure and simply admit stuff.

I recently took a poly and the drug/alcohol questions came up. Im 27 and ive never been drunk/high. So thats what I said. He didnt believe me and we took A LOT of time on that section of the test because it isn't ordinary. I stuck with my story and the machine didnt detect anything so I passed. Being sober your entire life can show integrity, and it can also show a lack of life experience. How do you plan on dealing with the bottom run of society 90% of your shift when youve never even been drunk? How can you be empathetic for people you dont understand? It can work both ways - its all how you represent yourself and articulate your answers.

Officer401. I understand that yes if you go to college and get some degree in/for criminal justice or law enforcement, it will open up jobs(doors). But heres my question. I have done extensive research on working for the federal government/law enforcement/homeland security, etc. They all require some sort of college degree. However my question is can you (I) work my way up the line? Example (I start as local police then after 3-4yrs I want to work as a state trooper then after a certain amount of time Homeland the FBI then Secret Service) I hope you understand what I'm trying to say. So would all that be possible with just experience instead of college?

I completed my internship at a local PD in central Iowa and during my ride alongs I asked the officers and Sgts advice on applying. your comment about stick with your answer and don't flip flop will stay with me during the upcoming hiring season for departments. most of the officers I rode with were chill like you. most people don't realize that they are people to. they like to joke around and relieve the boredom and stress.

I found this channel thru Mike the Cop, and I found his channel thru Think like a Cop - I started watching cop videos b/c I'm an avid Firearms enthusiast and wanted to glean wisdom about law, handling guns, the proper way to interact with LE and tactical training, etc.
Currently working towards becoming a Chicago Police Officer. They have a program here where certain high school students can apply and enter the academy, and I have orientation on Saturday. You hit the nail on the head, Sir. Integrity. Even if it's painful and results in some "awarded" time off- you can never get it back. I think of it along the same line as perjury. 18 year PO here, and I've seen it over and over. If you foul up making an honest effort, my experience has been that the real supervisors will help you out from getting crucified- even during the head hunting times.
