  • A Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) project is underway to correct the historical wrong that left tens of thousands of fallen black and Asian troops without headstones after the First World War.
    In April, a report released by the CWGC revealed "pervasive racism" in the way their deaths were treated.
    The investigation found that at least 116,000 predominantly African and Middle Eastern casualties of World War One "were not commemorated by name or possibly not commemorated at all".

    I was in school in the 1970/80s and at my school we all learned in our history class about the 1st world war and later the 2nd world war and the African, Indian & commonwealth / Empire troops involved plus those troops who received the VC, i remember seeing pictures of two very fine looking Sikhs, with their turbans and wearing their VCs.
    When i was older i was friends with a Sikh shopkeeper who's father was in the 2nd world world and he would talk about his father, also i learned from him that some Sikhs joined the German army, wanting independence from the UK. So to me personally they are not forgotten and i learned of them as a child. So don't blanket everyone one the same.

    I have the up most respect for our Sikh community for what their grandparents did for this island. Both world wars they fought bravely and it sickens me they are not remembered like our home grown warrior's. I say Sikhs but there were so many other people's who fought for the world we live in now so I hope there will be new remembrance gardens with headstones for all faiths. I know this has nothing to do with this but isn't it ironic that racists can be racist because men with darker skin than theirs fought and won ww2 for the freedom of speech they have now even though its not tolerated in reality.

    The dead should be remembered, but why don't their own relatives & governments in Asia & Africa do it, & why haven't they done it for 100 years? Why should the British State take responsibility for what goes on among peoples & lands that its had no governmental authority over for 70 years now? These people weren't included in the work of the War Graves Commission in the 1920's because there was no demand for it among the populations they came from in Africa/Asia, who had little interest in WW1, it wasn't "racial prejudice". Where's the evidence they're any more interested in that war culturally now, or memorializing its dead? There isn't any, so what's this all about? Why is the War Graves Commission engaging in agendas more to do with contemporary politics than serving its purpose of keeping the graves & memorials of Britain's war dead?

    • @nickchristian8195
      @nickchristian8195 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The point is that every soldier from whatever part of the then Empire who fought and died for Britain in WW1 should have been honoured at the time, there was and is no reasonable room for exceptions. It is important to put this right now to honour and remember their sacrifice alongside those from all Nations thst served.
      I would also say that the involvement of Indian and African troops in WW1 IS taught in schools and school trips to the battlefields will feature the graves and memorials to Indian soldiers and Chinese Labour Corps men.
      Britain has a proud history of honouring the war dead and "They will not be forgotten."
