Wow adding the playlist of artist that used it really put it in perspective it def has its own sonic signature and vibe. All of those songs have their own special warmth
The problem with these devices, which are still used by some to get a "lo-fi" sound (and because the preamps have a certain character), is the 1/4-inch tape. Tape width determines fidelity - the greater the width, the higer the fidelity. As a reference point for highest fiedleity, consider a 24-track tape machine using 2-inch tape (the professional standard), with each 1/4-inch of tape width containing just Three tracks. (The Highest high fidelity in professional analog recording is actually achieved using a 16-track 2-inch tape machine - with only Two tracks of audio printed across each 1/4-inch of the tape's width.) The 388, however, crams Eight tracks into a 1/4-inch of width, which in theory produces lower fidelity than even a 4-track machine which uses cassette tape.
Analog = Learn your instrument, Master your craft, Practice to Perfection, & finally Capture a 'Performance' Digital = Lazy music & under practiced fix it in post musicians, capturing 'tracks' I have a 388 in mint condition wrapped up in bubble wrap with some other goodies. I need to dig it out and see if its compatible with USB 2.0 🤔😁
would you be interested in selling it ? i have all my masters but gave my mint condition 388 away for free when i changed my recording format, because i'm an idiot and kicking myself in the arse everyday
I got a question, when your record to tape how do you have every tracked sync right if lets say your coming from a mpc outs? You can just just play on mpc and tape plays and recording correct? So how do you get everything syncd right as well as going back into daw?

Facts. But I think it's those imperfections and tape character folks are going for.

A mint condition 388 sounds awesome! If mine was mint condition, I'd be tempted to keep it in bubble wrap, too :)
