  • This is the essential critical review of the music of the Electric Light Orchestra (E.L.O.) during the Roy Wood era. This unique independent film traces the development of the band from the tailend of the Move era in the late sixties through to the creation of ELO’s legendary debut album and on to the birth of Wizzard.
Includes a bonus live set filmed in 1972 originally called Granada's Set of Six, and features four of the six songs, These songs are the only known live original Roy Wood ELO tracks ever filmed.
This independent biography traces the foundations of the band through its metamorphosis from The Move in 1970 and later to the point where Roy Wood quit the group leaving Jeff Lynne to steer the band into worldwide stardom. Narrated throughout by a team of music journalists and musicians.
The Electric Light Orchestra (ELO) is an English rock band formed in Birmingham in 1970 by songwriters and multi-instrumentalists Jeff Lynne and Roy Wood with drummer Bev Bevan. Their music is characterized by a fusion of pop, classical arrangements, and futuristic iconography. After Wood's departure in 1972, Lynne became the band's sole leader, arranging and producing every album while writing nearly all of their original material. For their initial tenure, Lynne, Bevan, and keyboardist Richard Tandy were the group's only consistent members.
In November 2016, Jeff Lynne's ELO won Band of the Year at the Classic Rock Roll of Honour Awards. In October 2016, ELO were nominated for the 2017 class of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for the first time. It was the first time the Hall had announced in advance the members of bands who would be inducted; the members of ELO listed were Jeff Lynne, Roy Wood, Bev Bevan and Richard Tandy. On 20 December 2016, it was announced ELO had been elected to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Class of 2017.

Some facts about Jeff Lynne (ELO)...First, he is a very humble man, simply because this Music Genius is not interested in fame, the limelight, and money, he just loves to create great music. Jeff Lynne is one of the most versatile musicians ever, this is why he is considered by his peers to be among the greatest. He didn't stick to one style of music because, after decades, it gets boring. Jeff has done progressive Rock, Symphonic Rock - Pop, New wave, and Disco.
Everything he does turns to gold. He even flirted with Country music. From 1972 to 1986 (During 14 years) Jeff Lynne's Electric Light Orchestra has had more top 40 hits than any other group in the world... 51 years later they still play in sold-out Arenas, festivals and Stadiums. During Jeff Lynne's ELO 2019 Tour, many reviews agreed in saying they are the best live Classic Rock Band in the world still touring and Jeff Lynne is a Music Genius( From Forbes Magazine and the Washington Post).
ELO is in the Rock Hall of Fame. Lynne is on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame and Birmingham Walk OF Fame. Jeff Lynne’s ELO won the Best Classic Rock Band plus Lynne won the best Songwriter award ( ASCAP ) in 2019 for his fantastic contribution over the years. In October of 2020, Jeff Lynne has been made an officer of The Order Of The British Empire for his extraordinary contribution to music. He previously has received three Ivor Novello Awards, which celebrate songwriters and composers, including the award for outstanding services to British music.
He created the best Super Group of all time with his best friend George Harrison, The Traveling Wilburys. The Legends in the Music Industry call Jeff Lynne the best overall Musician ever and a Producer Extraordinaire. Jeff Lynne has written and produced many hit songs for music legends like George Harrison, Roy Orbison, Tom Petty, Joe Walsh, Brian Wilson, Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Bryan Adams, Aerosmith, Del Shannon, the Everly Brothers, The Beatles, and so many others...In June 2023 Jeff Lynne was inducted in The Songwriters Hall Of Fame ❤👍💯

Taylor Swift and several other artists have done the same thing. If I’m right, Olivia Newton John re-recorded her catalog before she passed. (Open to correction). Yes it’s all about making money. But it cuts out on the IHEARTRADIO/Clear Channel record companies from profiting off the backs of the artists only to cut money’s due the song writers.

Jeff Lynne needed Roy Wood's cash to get himself established in the music industry because he had no cash of his own, before "10538 Overture", Lynne had never written a hit record in his four years with The Idle Race or his two years with The Move. "10538 Overture" wouldn't have been the same song without Roy Wood's heavy cello riffs.

I went to an early ELO gig at the Brighton Dome in, oh, must have been May '72. Attendance was pitifully low, and probably the main reason was that the local football team were playing in a crucial match the same night (which in fact they won, thus clinching promotion to the Second Division).
To be honest, the football fans probably made the right choice. The band's first album had already been out for some months, but they'd only recently started playing live shows, and hadn't really got things bedded in. Part of the trouble, referred to by commentators here, was the difficulty in getting the balance right among all the different instruments. As Bev Bevan pointed out in his book The ELO Story. it wasn't till the cellists got hold of some Barcus-Berry pick-ups that they were able to hear what the others were doing and blend in properly.
Roy and Jeff both sported the weird costumes you see here (and in those days you had to be REALLY weird to stand out from the common herd). The only number I can clearly recall them playing was Great Balls Of Fire, which was the closer.
All in all, there was little to suggest the monster phenomenon which ELO would start to become only about a year later.
Support acts that night were Fishbaugh, Fishbaugh and Zorn (who??), and Colin Blunstone (himself accompanied by an eight-piece string mini-orchestra).

ELO was better without Roy Wood. It just was period, full stop. Jeff's lyrics and melodies overshadowed Roy's by miles. And even though not every song Jeff wrote was a success, I can't imagine Roy being a part of the mid-late 70's ELO. He had his run and it ended at the right time.

I am learning guitar at 50 and I walk by the ocean and day dream sounds and it did come to me that a stringed orchestra could give lush sounds and not to use it as a gimmick at the beginning or end of a song but through out. I bet this stuff is great with the new spacial sound tech coming out. Would love to hear it in that spacial format. My salute to real musicians rather than lap tops.

Jeff brought ELO sooo much farther than Roy ever could have.

I've always thought that Roy wrote "Wear a Fast Gun" for the projected second ELO album "The Lost Planet", as you have said, Phil, the two songs are very similar and the cello passages on "Wear a Fast Gun" are reminders of the ELO sound. After Roy left ELO "The Lost Planet" project was abandoned, Jeff reworked the songs and it was released as "ELO 2" in 1973.

While on one hand I'm glad there's a documentary about the history of ELO, I wish it could have been produced using actual interviews with people who had first hand knowledge of the band and the making of their records. Instead what's presented here is a low-budget, carelessly slapped together series of comments by people who know absolutely nothing that would make this program worth watching. Unfortunately this is just another in a long series of such "documentaries" on important music artists that have so little regard for the audience and the subject material.

Without the beautiful work and support of Wood, Lynne ended up adapting ELO's style to the musical trends of the 70s successfully. The result was crystal clear on this. I guess that another second experimental record similar like ELO 1971, would be very risky, and could burried ELO as the original group that we knew then.
