What do you think about doing a chromatic scale, but returning to the note you started on after each consecutive note? I really like the challenge. (i.e C Db C D C Eb until you hit the highest C). I think it's a neat little range building challenge, but I think it's always nice to get advice from a pro. My college is only now trying to build up a music program, so I don't really have anyone to ask about it (the only brass player here is a tubaist, tubist? whatever)
Med Down Plays - sure! That's a good exercise, but that targets working on something other what I was talking about here. There are many great exercises to work on chromatic scale playing as well!
The Q is: Is it done reading the intervals or memorized? it seems like a pain playing them from memory first and not paying attention to your sound from concentrating on remembering the notes. Thanks for the tips
Read the first key perhaps but then all from memory! The goal is fluidity and freedom to improvise in each key - so getting your head out of the sheet music is essential for that. But yea it does take a little longer (at first) - but better results!!
Ok im having a really hard time deciding if i have good tone and i listen to a me5ric crap ton of trombone i practice when i have time or try to anyways however i dont know where i place myself
The tiny smile after 11 more to go kills me everytime
Hahaha amazing. I never noticed 🤣
🤪
Great advice Nick!

Glad to hear this - good luck!!!
Ok, you've got me : I'll buy the book 😉 The first interval exercise teaches J. Alessi as well. Great !
Hahaha. You can transcribe it if you don’t wanna buy! 🤪
any chance these are available in treble clef? Wonderful material...
Hmm I’m not sure it is yet. It’s definitely in bass. And even better to learn by ear!
geez, you puff just one cheek! never saw anyone doing that before!
Haha. Yep, sometimes. And not all the time... 😜
Trombone Shorty lol

+Jan Krtička 😜
You really have good range and tone nice👌
+Alonso Martinez thanks Alonso - hope to hear you sometime
What's your best exercise for Intonation issues ??
major and minor scales with drones! play each scale degree until it rings in tune before moving on to the next. Do for full range of each key.
@@NickFinzer THX I've been playing with Drones with Headphones it seems to be helping Thx I'm 62 wish I had TH-cam in my Teens and 20s
That’s great! Glad ur doing that already
Is that a King 4b? Thanks. Great sound.
3b plus!
@@NickFinzer Roger that. I need one! Thanks for the videos. Great stuff. I’ll be working on my scales :-)
Nice! 😊
@@tyfude lets hear it! :)

thx scotty!
'Get Ahead' seems to be sold out?
Hi Ezra! Physical copies are sold out from my store. They are still available on amazon or the digital copy in my online store! 👍
is that a 2B or a .491? king 12C, or 11C m/p please, u have a great tone!
+POLYZENIDAS it's actually a King 3B Plus .525 bore - marcinkowitz 6E-S mouthpiece.
can someone explain the scale formula of 3:44 minute, up and down? thanks! Nick?
+trombon78 sure! It's all the diatonic triads found in the major scale. Starting up F major down G minor up A minor down Bb major etc...
I've found a great book by Kynaston and Ricci called Jazz Improvisation. It takes these exercises to the next level! (12 keys and their modes too!)
Yea? I’m not familiar- but it’s always better to do the transposing mentally than using a book!
@@NickFinzer I agree! The book only gives examples in C in one octave! It says "the rest is on your own" :)
Bam!
I never thought of that - it wasn't in Arban's .... :)
haha - well there's a lot of stuff out there that's not in that Arbans book ;) - but of course it's a GREAT place to start!!!
Would like to know what mouthpiece you you use. Thanks. Paul
hey Paul! sure: it's a Marcinkiewicz 6E-S; just looks black from tarnishing.....
Thanks Nick. A good lesson on the Major Scale workout BTW. Any lessons on sound/tone improvement?
+paulvlk1 not yet. Coming soon!
great lesson -
glad you enjoyed it!

is your trombone tuned to 432 hz?
Arel Enoc don't think so! Could be ur speakers or headphones playing tricks on ur ears.
Ok im having a really hard time deciding if i have good tone and i listen to a me5ric crap ton of trombone i practice when i have time or try to anyways however i dont know where i place myself
So you record yourself and listen back?
Nick Finzer yes
That’s the move 👍
What mouthpiece is that?
Hi Lisandro - it's a Marcinkowitz 6E-S (highly tarnished! haha, that's why it looks so dark in color...)
nice tutorial
+Iwank Markzaid 👍
why You use a playback?
I know.becouse it sounds better!
hug bro!
woow
Hope ur enjoying the exercise 👍
