Great memories of this zoo. I live 45 mins from the city. Getting up early to get into the free zones, we called it, we just had the children’s zoo and a bird feeding enclosed huge area. The staff is so kind and from what I see, heard and experience those animals are so well cared for. Forest Park is all around an amazing place!
How cool! The family is hoping to visit a buddy in Missouri this summer. We'll have to see how close he lives and have a side trip! Thank you for sharing a part of your day with us!
the elephant at 6:25 is Raja. The first elephant born there. He's very well known and gets a big birthday celebration every year and now has several children (unfortunately the last one, and his first son, born in July, had to be put down because he was sick :( ) . Raja is the only male there so he kind of stands out. Didn't see him my last trek (fourth time in a month because it's convenient living right across the highway), but I saw two of his children. Kind of stood out because they were definitely NOT full grown!.

Absolutely! If you go to their website, www.stlzoo.org/ look for the "Give" tab, which has a bunch of options. Or look at the "Membership" which will help them, but also give you free or reduced cost admission to a lot of other zoos around the country.
Commenting a year late but here just to say that street parking around the zoo in Forest Park, where the zoo's located, is always free whatever time of day. I think whoever said to get there early was more talking about how it can be hard to find a spot nearby the zoo (but not impossible!) so it's best to get there early. Even then I've never had to street park more than maybe a couple minute's walk away. I'm from St. Louis and have always loved the zoo! (and everything else about Forest Park)
Love how much you guys appreciate the alpacas! A few of my relatives run an alpaca farm and they're now up to 17! Beautiful animals and pretty friendly, too. They actually have one that is a certified therapy animal and does school and nursing home visits.
I am also a volunteer docent at this zoo. Did you know that what makes up the barriers at the bird house is piano wire? It’s almost completely invisible to cameras. There was actually one time where one of the birds flew out and the keepers had me keep people back until they caught it.
The St. Louis zoo is my favorite zoo. I was there last year and even my boys loved it. My favorite part is the Hippos and the polar bear. Also alot of exhibits at the Science Center are free.
We were there several years ago very nice very clean, glad it's still free Wish I could aford the people who did the rivers edge to come do some landscapeing
I've been going to the zoo ever since I was a little kid. If you don't mind walking, you won't even need to park in the zoo parking lot. There's plenty of places to park around Forest Park

I know you go early enough you can park for free on the roads around the zoo but depending on how many people you have in the group you can ride to the zoo on Metro and avoid parking fees. Btw the History Museum and the Art Museum are free to most of the exhibits that are also located in Forrest Park where the zoo is located I often ride the metro to the park and then bike around where I'm going
in Peterborough Ontario Canada, their Zoo called .... wait for it the Peterborough Zoo is also free.. its small but very cool , the train is only $2, good size a 10 min ride..
I'm from St Louis. The reason why this is the only free zoo in the United States. The county and the City taxes are high to support the zoo, also the zoo has corporate sponsors with their logos in the zoo. They remodeled the zoo about 10 years ago. I've been to other zoos in other states was not impressed. They had good ideals but not good. St Louis zoo in Forest Park plenty of land and the same spot of the 1904 world's Fair. I feel they should expand the zoo with all that property that they have in Forest Park for Safari elephants rhinos gazelles and making bigger than more just small units of animals but it is always up to date and clean. They have a train that goes around the the zoo. Like I said the only problem that I have with the zoo is they put too much in one spot instead of in expanding the zoo and put more in to the zoo more property because it's all by taxes so they cancut off the streets in the park and make more land for the zoo because the zoo is the most profit in the Forest Park where the zoo is at. They have the art museum that's the only building that's standing there from 1904 world's Fair. And in front of the art museum they call it art Hill where people can slide down the hill to the boat ride pond. Kansas City zoo had potential but it really sucked, same as Las Vegas and then you have to pay to get into the zoo that was so high and it was unmanaged property very disappointing.
I would definitely suggest parking on the street for free. Some days you might have a little bit of a walk but during the week, it's not too bad. The last time I was at the zoo we parked like, 20 feet from the entrance. The only time I've ever parked in the parking lot was when I've been with someone handicapped. Forest Park isn't as scary as people would like to believe. Just lock your doors and don't leave anything valuable in sight ~just in case.~ I spend as much time as I possibly can in Forest Park and I've NEVER had any kind of issue. There's been several times I've accidentally left my car unlocked for several hours and everything was still exactly as I had left it when I got back. Forest Park has amazing security so I never worry. :)

Not as strange as you might think. There are 2 components to steam engines: the boiler, with the water in it that makes the steam, and the burner/ heat elements that heat the water to make the steam. Many people think of coal or wood as the fuel that does it- in which case it's a large furnace compartment on the engine. But many engines will change that over to a diesel or gas burner system to heat the water. That's actually how most modern steam engines operated. It can be fairly easy to tell- if it's a dark colored smoke coming out of the flue, it's probably coal. If it's white, then it's probably gas or diesel.

I’m going thru the hardest decision in my life right now because my crew is deciding if we want to go to Lincoln Park Zoo or Bronx Zoo, And I suggested This one or Philly. I will probably want to come to this place, because this zoo has elephants, polar bears & bonobos But philly doesn’t.

The squid in the atrium torments me to this day. Saw it as a 3 year old way back in the mid 90's and I still can't go swimming.

I know it is a challenge for them to fund it. Last year I believe they put in a small sales tax increase in the area to help fund it.

Now this may have changed but when I visited the Cleveland Zoo it was $10 admission and free parking. I think that is a better deal than St Louis.
