It has been three years since I recorded this and I still listen to it often because it is one of my favorites. An amazing performance. I am so glad I was there to capture it for posterity.
I'm also so glad you did capture it James! The performances are brilliant from all 4 musicians, they 've formed a very tight band and I can't say if I have a favorite in terms of music; but what I can say is this; Albanie looks so genuinely happy for singing and making this band gig, that she makes me smile too! Thank's for posting.
What a pleasure for my ears is this. Love Albanie´s laugh, she seems a very sweet girl. Love and respect from Chile Mr. James Sterling for share this musical jewel.
Chloe Feoranzo ... you always amaze me with your huge talent with your gorgeous Clarinet playing and silky smooth Vocal! I could watch you perform all day and night. You go girl!
Hidden gems! I've fallen in love with Albanie and Chloe! "Pearls in the ocean," yet to be discovered by mainstream jazz lovers. Yes, Benny Goodman has been reincarnated by Chloe Feoranzo!
Man, such a relaxing song. And the voice of the singer so perfect on spot. Enjoyed it so much, played it over a few times. Thank you for bringing us joy in these troubled times.
Absolutely delightful. Congratulations to the four musicians and to you, James, for persuading them to give this tune a try - and then for filming it so well.
I'm just finding all sorts of incredible musical talent after falling into the TH-cam Vortex and it sure seems like the New Orleans area is a musical Mecca (does everyone sing / dance / play an instrument?). I guess I'll have to make a pilgrimage to NOLA - and soon to save my soul! Superb!
Kala is still around playing with various bands but recently every time I see him he is playing clarinet, which I believe he only recently took up. I prefer him on guitar. Chloe is in such demand she is on the road frequently so catching her in New Orleans is hit or miss. Albanie also travels quite a bit. I ran into her this past FQF but she said she did not have a gig with anyone that weekend. John Joyce still plays with The Smoking Time Jazz Band as far as I know.
Chloe is phenomenal and the primary reason I came here, but how about the gentleman on guitar? Wow, he is awesome! The whole band is tight! And as I'm typing this, Albaine breaks into her solo, my Lord, they are excellent! And let's not forget the fellow on bass, he's right in the pocket! James, I have recently developed a spark for this type of jazz music and it's due in large part to viewing your videos and for my own musical journey with the guitar. I have mixed feelings about people (mostly everyone with cell phones at live performances) recording shows, but videos just like this make me really appreciate people that film quality material. It has to be frustrating as an artist nowadays with everyone with a camera on them all the time, but at the same time, I would have never been exposed to these bands without this platform. Whether good or bad, modern technology has taken many miles out of our journeys in discovering any thought or interest the mind can manifest across the globe. Without your videos and videos like this, I would have never been able to experience New Orleans jazz like I recently have, thank you.
Thank you so much for your thoughts. I too discovered this wonderful music and these phenomenal performers on TH-cam. Fortunately I live only a 3 hour drive from New Orleans and have the time and means to travel there frequently. While recording I try to be as unobtrusive as possible I can recall only one instance where a musician was bothered by my recording and that was because he was not satisfied with his performance and did not want it published. I have seen musicians ask other people who used the light on their phones while recording to turn it off. This performance is one of my favorites that I've recorded. It was an early afternoon session at the d.b.a. and other than the bartender I was the only person there. It was awkward for the musicians I think, but it allowed me to stand as close as I wanted and not have any crowd noise or people walking in front of the camera. The bass player is John Joyce and the lead guitar is Kala Chandra. Kala had just recently arrived in New Orleans when this was recorded and has since become a regular on Frenchmen Street.
I can tell by the manner in which you film that you are respectful of the musicians and the crowd as well, it really shows in your work. I can't believe you and the bartender were the only people in the facility, that is such a shame. Being that said, it truly shows you what it is to be a professional musician, as they performed like they were playing for an arena! I know one thing, although there were only two folks at this show, this performance has now been seen by almost three sold-out arenas worth of people! You know, I think having an active TH-cam channel with content on it can sometimes distort our perception of viewership as their model for views doesn't really seem to matter in their eyes until you get in the seven-figure view count numbers, but when you think about the number of people actually viewing material, it is mindblowing. As of the time I type this, 26,628 individuals have seen this performance, that is right on par with half of an entire stadium worth of people!!
All the credit goes to the musicians. I can almost guarantee you that this was the first time these musicians had played together and also the first time they had played this song together. I requested that they play it, they had a brief discussion as to whether everyone knew the tune, what key, and off they went! As a non musician I find it mind blowing that they can do this and be flawless in the execution of it. I checked your TH-cam channel and you and I share a lot of other common interests. I also believe that "accuracy speaks"!
That's impressive, yeah it is amazing how real pros can just adapt to any environment, but I guess it's like most anything someone works so hard to perfect their craft can usually adapt to most situations. Thanks for checking out the channel!
I hope to catch Kala in December. He is an amazing performer, so chill and masterly in his playing.I've watched several videos of him with Eight Dice Cloth. He reminds me of Craig Flory in a way. @@JamesSterling
These most tenuous though strong musicians have us begging for their vulnerabilities to be exposed and yet they have crossed that threshold, all to their benefit and ours. Are we not in love?
Fine musicianship on a great number, but not sure that Albanie will be so pleased to see this vocal saved for posterity! Ah well, live and lively, thanks for posting.
Everyone's opinion is different, that is what makes the world go around, but I disagree with your assessment of Albanie's vocals. I think she sounded great.
@@JamesSterling Well I enjoyed it all as well James, but there are some bum notes in there too, my point being that I am pretty sure that she can sing it better and undoubtedly will. It's a tough vocal for sure. The original, on TH-cam by Violet Lorraine, also includes the verse which is nice. Whatever, I would travel a long way to hear Albanie sing and play and I hope that I get the chance. Thanks again for posting!
I´m so in love with Chloe - this is a good band for her. Thank you, James - for this - Albanie are also unique. What canI do more? Give thumb - take subscibe... Thank you!!
This is a wonderfully intimate performance you managed to capture James! For some reason I kept thinking of a layer cake while listening; the strings are the dense and tasty sponge cake and the clarinet is the perfectly-sweetened frosting. All work together to make some delicious music.
Love your food analogy! This is one my favorite videos I've made on Frenchmen Street. This was an early afternoon performance at the d.b.a. and their was no one in the place except the band, the bartender, and me. I felt bad for the band but it made for excellent recording conditions. What was amazing was that this was the first time these musicians had performed together and I requested this song. Albanie performs it often but after a quick discussion between themselves they took off and absolutely NAILED IT!
@@JamesSterling Thanks. I was kind of hungry while watching and the phrase "jazz cake" popped into my head. The more I thought about it the more sense it made. The fact that the band was able to play it THAT perfectly just on a whim is nothing short of amazing. That's the difference between the real pros and dilettantes like me. And all without a fakebook in sight! And to a nearly empty room, which can be pretty discouraging. I understand why it's one of your favorites.

John Joyce is from Smoking Time Jazz Club. I saw that excellent guitarist when I was in NOLA last November playing on Royal St. with a band called 8 Dice Cloth. I do have videos posted of them.

I wish someone could explain the tempo shifts; there’s a hesitation (intentional?) that makes just enough room to speculate where the piece is going. It really is genius.
The effect is indeed intentional. I consulted with Pops Coffee for a technical explanation and this is what he said: "This song (composed by Harry Woods in 1934) is a standard 32-bar structure. As it comes up to the end of the first 16 bars, in bars 13, 14 and 15, only the first beat is sounded (with 'words', 'I', 'love' respectively and the other three beats in those bars are silent.
