Hi Erika, I didn't have a good experience with breast feeding. I had a very low supply both times around. I wish I had you around back then to give the advice you have given. My daughter was born 2001 and I tried so hard to breastfeed but because of my low supply she was getting very stressed and wasn't latching properly and that caused alot of pain and bleeding for me. I even tried nipple shields but I just wasn't getting a supply. By 2004 when my son was born I was fully prepared. Or so I thought. I decided to express my milk with a breast pump. Again my supply was really low and I was only able to express 3oz of milk. This was very upsetting for me but like you I believe fed is best so both my children had formula from day 1. All I was told back then was, don't worry your milk will come. But it never did. I wish I had the information then that I know now. But it means I can give advice to my children for there babies 😊

Very helpful! I didn’t have a good breast feeding experience all the way around, including from the LC. Ultimately I stopped producing entirely when my baby was only a month old, so I’m hoping any future babies I can take what I’ve learned and have a long breastfeeding journey!

Find support! Support is a huge part of making your journey last. It can be from friends and family or in a mommy group. I wouldn’t have made it if I hadn’t of joined La Leche League. And now I’m a leader so I can help other mommas struggling.

Support is HUGE! I was surrounded by people (especially my MIL) telling me not to bother struggling with breastfeeding and eventually I did stop. My mom was trying to be supportive but she only breastfed me for 3m and only formula fed my brothers so she didn't really have advice

One thing I’d add: breastfeeding changes around month 3. Production goes from in advance to on demand, but to a FTM it might seem like it’s slowing down. Not at all. Your breasts become less tender and you’re producing as much as your baby needs, whenever you latch them on. So just keep on latching them babies!

Yes, absolutely!! I remember worrying my supply was dropping, but it's just regulating!

We had similar experiences with both our kids! I did my best to breastfeed my first born and by 6 months I wasn't producing enough breast milk and we had to supplement with formula and eventually only formula. Now with my second baby, she's exclusively breastfed and she's 7 months! 😊

Good tips! I hated covers too. I remember fighting with them and poor Katie would have beads of sweat all across her nose.

Yes! Poor babies get so hot in there!

A big tip that I learned is...don’t listen to the lactation consultant. Listen to your body and the family and friends who have experience around you. The lactation consultants give you advice based on the book, not on what’s best for each individual woman and her baby.

I can see how this may be true for some. I've had experience with a unhelpful LC. But I've also met some who are SO helpful! Mommy gut is first though!

@@ErikaAnn That is true! The advice I took from my LC that wasn’t helpful was also just specific to me. She told me not to breastfeed my baby in a certain position because I would smother her, and in the last week or so before I stopped producing, I learned that was the most comfortable position for both of us. I think it all just depends on the situation for each person 🤷🏻‍♀️. I’ve also heard good things about LCs.

Such good tips here! I’m 4 months into exclusively breastfeeding my second (wasn’t able to master it with my first so she was formula fed) one thing I wish I didn’t listen to LC about is introducing a bottle before 8 weeks because “nipple confusion”. My 4 month old now will not take a bottle at all- and I’ve tried every bottle & teat under the sun 😅

Oh gosh! Journey does not like bottles either, but will suck down some breastmilk from a weighted straw sippy cup!

@@ErikaAnn Ahhh! I hadn’t even thought about that! I’ll introduce that when he starts weening, thank you!! ❤️
