  • In today's video, we meet Tina from Montana who loves to go camping in her outstanding quality Springbar tent ( Springbar Tent: amzn.to/2HfFKot). While she is still living in a house and working right now, we discuss the possibility of being a nomad in her future and whether she would live in the tent. Hopefully, her experience and ideas will help you decide if living in a tent may be something that would work for you.

I found this very moving. You can see there’s a lot going on there with Tina and rather than scrimp and save or take out a loan, she got the dream accomplished. I have never considered myself a tent kinda gal but I have to admit she is onto something here, she’s got a roomy little studio apartment. Would love to see how the tent goes up. Tina, all the best to you !!

Yes, that's what it says at their website. So what happens if it rains overnight and you have to leave in your minivan with wet canvas?? I'm thinking about buying this tent to add to my minivan, but would be a mess to toss in there when wet.

    • @phyllisstein1837
      @phyllisstein1837 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

Kathleen Dittmer you'll have to set it up again when it's not raining out to dry even if that's in your own yard. It'll mold and mildew which will ruin the canvas.

    • @kathleendittmer2447

Bob my favourite vids are the ones of women on their own, how they do it. It gives me so much courage to know there are other women out there. One day I hope you do a vid of a Canadian woman on her own because it's so much different, we can't always be in the warm weather of the USA. I would love to know how other women are doing it. We face all the challenges our sisters in the States do, with lower incomes then men all our lives, divorced, left with nothing, or personal choices that we wish we never made, and we get on in years and don't know what/where/how to live on our own and make our money stretch and unable or not wanting to commit to some sort of retirement home that takes all the rest of our money, where the years just whittle away in dullness. This woman is a tremendous example of honouring the female spirit, facing fears, doing with less. Bless you Bob for showing her, and thanks to her for demonstrating how she does it.

Having travelled with a tent in the past, it's easily doable. Spent 2 and a half years doing so. Currently, my sister and I are doing the same again. We each have spent the last 11 months living out of the back of 2, old Volvo wagons(240 series), with a trailer on the back for water(400 litres, travel in remote Australia, hot and bone dry) and other gear, fridge/freezer, solar panels and batteries etc.. Use a tarp to keep out of the sun. So yes, both living in a tent and/or a small vehicle, is more than possible, it's achievable! With dogs and even cats, in tow! 🙂

Years ago, when my youngest son & I went teepee camping near Waco, Texas, he was about 7 or 8, and his siblings were in college or married. We'd participated in an old fashioned wagon train ride which had ended, and were still far from home. And our teepee was a heavy-duty 14'x14' with a tent floor. Well, on our last night, a "norther" howled in bringing snow flurries. We had heavy sleeping bags, several good wool blankets, a tiny Bunsen burner for heating our cans of soup, but not much else, except a folding card table. We zipped our sleeping bags together, placed a thick wool blankets over that and clipped them along the sides so it would all stay put, then placed the card table over the head part of our sleeping bags, & put our large, thinner blanket on top of the table, where it draped to the floor and warmed the air before we had to breath it in. We wore in our softest, warm clothes and had a good laugh over trading places with Santa Claus. We still laugh about it.
The only thing I remember not liking was the weight bearing down on my toes. When I returned to work, a friend suggested placing a pillow (or a something rolled up) at the soles of my feet to give them support. I still do that today.
But what made me want to write, is to share that if anyone is caught in a sudden cold snap, you can be quite comfortable if you make a "small tent" inside your big one, to conserve body heat. The little tent could simply be a long pole length of your sleeping area, or just the width of it, as it was for my son and I. It could be attached with bungies, or cord or zipties wrapped around pieces of blanket with a pebble, and made high enough to accommodate however many people it needs to. With my children now all grown, I'm enjoying once again, peace and freedom of both car- and tent- camping even more. Someday, I might graduate to a van or camper, but right now I'm having too much fun otherwise. :-)

The week before I went out to Quartzsite this year (2024) for the RTR, I was trying to figure out the best way to work in the bathroom situation. I planned on camping out of my SUV and bringing my "poop tent" but knew there wouldn't be a whole lot of options of trees to tie that tent to. In discussing it with a friend who is also an experienced dispersed camper, she said, "Why don't you just get a cheap popup tent and use that?" Had never dawned on me to use my popup tent (which I already owned) for a bathroom/dressing room area. Game changer! And not only that, that tent "held my place" at my campsite when I had to drive into town. I highly recommend having a fully enclosed popup tent on hand! I did use it as my bathroom/dressing room area, and slept on my very nice no-build bed arrangement in my SUV. Worked wonderfully!

I have to say the women are not only beautiful they are also dignified, classy, good natured, intelligent, well kept and put together. It is undeniable testament to the life they chose. I don't mean to butt in, but I am planning to start this lifestyle with a Toyota Tacoma and a Springbar tent like this one (I have the Campsite 3 model). I'm a female, 5'1" tall. I am able to set up this tent by myself! I practiced several times in my backyard, and used it at the 2018 rubbertramp rendezvous. Wearing grippy work gloves is helpful to me while extending the side bars and get them nicely tensioned. Also no rain fly is needed. The canvas is very tightly woven and is great at repelling water. The company actually instructs you to hose it down when first setting up, to get the weave to tighten up even more. No issues at all with water getting in. On top of all of the other benefits, canvas just has a more comforting, homey and rustic feel. Springbar tents are an excellent investment.

I shopped for cots several years ago. Can't recall if I saw Helinox. But either the legs got in the way of under cot storage, or the reviews said they squeaked, sagged or the fabric was too tight to pull over the ends. I ended up buy the pricey Exped Megamat, 4 inches thick, high R factor, pumps to perfect flatness. Even with back injury it's better than any 2k plus bed. At REI you can try them out. Comfy even on the floor but I need storage space under a cot. Will check out LL Bean and Helinox. Does yours have any of the bad features listed above???

Great job Bob and Tina! The zip tie idea is genius. Until now I didn't think a tent was a viable way to do it, but Tina has changed my mind. Another plus for a tent is that sleeping on the ground eliminates the movement that we in RVs feel during a windy night. I will have to be settled on slow, as my social security is almost nothing. I think I will take the passenger seat out so I can sleep in the car if it is raining or too windy to set up a tent. I have done a lot of car camping in the back seat, and felt very discouraged, as even one night was uncomfortable, and a week was all I could bear. I hope to see your truck build someday.

I lived in a tent for a year and a half through ice storms, snow storms, rain for days and the heat. It’s a very doable solution when needed. Mine was stationary, so I made a level platform with pallets, deck-painted plywood over that and then set the tent on that inside the tent, I laid insulation and then Oak tongue and groove flooring. Then I put down a rug for two. I made the walls framed in on the inside, so that I could hang quilts on every side of my bed area. My tent had two rooms. Some months I only had candles to burn before going to bed as my heat. At the time I had one cat and two dogs. It’s an experience I treasure. I know God was present, and gave me many ideas of how to survive comfortably! Thank you Tina, for sharing your story!

It's the scorpions that come out at night you really need to worry about! Always shake out your shoes before putting them on.

I live and camp in the desert, and wind is a big factor in enjoying, or not enjoying, the experience. Recently, I bought a cordless impact driver and six 6" lag bolts to drive into the hard desert -- best foundation ever. Put a tarp over the tent, and you're even more protected from the elements.

Love the video! What a great idea, using the zip-ties as security... It never crossed my mind! As I watched the video, the thought of using small carabiners, instead of zip-ties, popped into my head! Safe travels.... peace :-)

Best wishes to Tina! For having the courage to explore ways to take care of herself. Instead of buying into the pharmaceutical treadmill of treating all mental illnesses with drugs after drugs that they and the medical profession profit from.

I have a mini van I converted to a drive able tear drop type set up- but I also have an easy up tent that I use for extra living space . I’m surprised not more van dwellers who are camping on BML don’t do that
