    Hopefully you're still answering comments on a 3-year old video. I'm doing this right now, copying over my Users folder to an external HDD. It says 'Creating "Users.dmg"... but nothing is happening. The progress bar hasn't moved and nothing is showing in the details pane. It has been like this for about 15-20 minutes. Does it normally take that long to get started?

    • @DemetrideSkepsi
      @DemetrideSkepsi  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It depends on where the progress is hanging also the size of what is in that user directory; downloads, documents, desktop, etc. If it’s several GB then depending on the speed of your computers processor, and the speed of the SATA to USB connector if that’s what your using. The speed for the SATA connection could be 1.5-6GB/s theoretically. If it continue to do that I would try the process with a smaller file or directory to test that the external drive is working, you could try using a thumb drive to make sure that it’s not an issue with the externals cable or the external itself.

    • @DemetrideSkepsi
      @DemetrideSkepsi  ปีที่แล้ว

      As long as it’s the correct format, which if they’re all used for Mac they should be, then it should be fine. I only say use a blank drive because I want to remove any risk. As long as you don’t get prompted to format or erase during the process then you’re good, if you see anything that says to format or erase, stop. You can get 2tb+ drives for pretty cheap last I checked, about $70.

    • @DemetrideSkepsi
      @DemetrideSkepsi  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@drawthecrowds maybe the file formatting wrong. The file system could be the problem unless it gets formatted during the process. I believe Mac uses the file system Journaled or Journaled+ on older systems, like the MacBook 2015 (like in the video), or for newer Macs, APFS. I would just reformat your external drive to whatever your OS requires. Just remember you’re wiping out your external drive. Reformat it and everything that was on that external drive will be deleted during reformatting.

      Yeah, you can individually copy the files, there is also a way to copy from the terminal which you may need to do, something like ‘cp /path/to/file /copy/to/here’ it should have a force flag.
      You may be right that’s it’s stuck because it’s being used by iCloud, maybe even attempting to sync. You can also log into iCloud and grab those files there, assuming it synced all the way, double cover your bases.

      I’m sorry to hear that. If you have a Mac check your iCloud. If that doesn’t have your data you will have to ask a data expert, they may be able to recover the files. Honestly your best bet is to check if it’s been saved elsewhere. Also it is possible you partitioned the external drive so it could be in another partition although I doubt it.

      Thank you! That’s a great question. I’m not sure if the permissions making a file read only would carry over. Theoretically, or at least I believe, the new host you move those files to should be able to do anything you want to those files, assuming you have root on the new host. Of course if the files are encrypted you won’t be able to access it without the key.

    I want to let people know this WORKS!
    Had updated to MacOS Monterey and my macbook pro stopped working. I did a bit differently because my recovery mode wouldn’t show disk utility. (That’s how much Monterey destroyed my mac) It would not boot or anything.
    I had to make a bootable USB drive with high sierra so I could use the disk utility from there. As well as mount a internal HD named “Macbook - Data”. But once I had that option everything worked exactly as the video explained.
