  • Although basic composting happens naturally, with the advent of some scientific know-how, we can still enhance the best soil amendment on earth: compost. Some companies, run by avid gardeners, have made it their life’s work to make a good thing even better. In this episode, we dig deeper into some of this work to find out how modern science has improved on perfection and how we can apply this information to our own gardens for even better results.

That's such an incredible example to keep the soil clean, it's all about wisdom and care and respect with the place where you all live by making everything around you all like a paradise, I'm impressed with so much creativity 😊

I turned green (with envy) just looking at those huge piles of compost!! It's like gardener heaven. I'm trying to get my compost pile moving faster. I mostly have wood chips, leaves and chicken poop. I did see tons of worm when I moved my pile, so I have hope.

Keep doing what you’re doing. The chicken manure combines with consistent moisture and turning often is the best. The wood chips just take a long time to break down. Not much you can do to speed that up. 👍

Another fantastic video. One of my fav shows to watch. Does anyone know about wood around gardens and it’s safety? We moved into a new house and I want to have my son make a garden area but it’s hard to find 6x6’s for the border that is not pressure treated. Is pressure treated safe for a garden? I see the incredible looking raised beds in Joe’s vids and show but they look to be untreated. I can’t find anyone who sells them untreated. Any ideas would help! Thanks

Hi. My beds are untreated western red cedar. I live in the atlanta area and sourced them nearby. I’m sure shipping cost is a big part of the cost. But knowing what I’m using may help you find them close to where you are. 👍

Thanks Joe! That is helpful. I’m in suburban Chicago and I looked on Menards website and cedar 6x6x10 are $192 ea. I’d need at least 12 for 2 beds if I only go 2 high. No way will my wife let me spend that much 🤣. They do have “cedar tone” but I think there might be harmful chemicals. By the way the pilot’s worm farm episode was my fav so far!

Been wanting to do this for a long time but live in Florida have heard stories of piles Catching Fire what are your thoughts on this

I rarelyhear anything about spontaneous combustion regarding compost piles. I know they get hot and in commmercial settings they get a lot hotter. But personally I think the chances are so low that it would not deter me.

I don't know if you guys made this video before or after the one that showed you piling mulch into a wooded area that had no understory or ground cover as shown in the healthy forest here.
Nothing good comes out of putting mulch in a natural forest because it creates anaerobic soil conditions and eventually kills the trees.
I know because it has happened in my neighborhood.

Not sure either but yes, good point you make. 👍
