      Why is VR necessary though? Stabilization is great with the IBIS that exists in all Z bodies save for the APS-C bodies. I understand if you own one of those but otherwise, you have VR already in the body. I can handhold at 1/10th 1/4 of a second because it’s actually VR that is built in. Most of Nikons pro Z lenses don’t have VR just for this reason. It’s simply not necessary/

    I love your videos, very relaxing to watch. Thank you. Im thinking of getting the Nikon z6 ii with 24-200mm for an all-around lens. Thoughts? Would love your input. I heard there could be issues with light/photo quality with a large mm range. I’m traveling internationally and ideally don’t want to take multiple lenses with me. (Wish Nikon z6iii was out too but don’t have time to wait before my travels!)

    • @ThomasPetzwinkler
      @ThomasPetzwinkler  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      So, I had the 24-200 and it was an excellent lens. The 24-120 is also excellent but doesn't have the reach. The image quality increase isn't worth it if you are in need of the extra reach. You can't go wrong with either really. You may or may not know where I landed. I ended up selling the 24-200 last year as I just like the 24-120 so much. If I had never bought the 24-120, I wouldn't feel like I was missing anything with the 24-200. I hope this helps. It sounds a bit schizophrenic but I hope I made sense. As for the Z6II. Excellent camera! I don't think you can go wrong with it. Its built like a tank, is a great all around camera. Has excellent video if that matters and is perfectly sized. Overall a winner. I would only suggest the Z7II if you need the resolution for larger printing or a lot of cropping.

      @@elafal377 I think if you are really careful with your scaling and use Lightroom's AI scaling feature, you can go easily up to 2' feet by 3' feet or larger. 4x6 might be a stretch up definitely large. You will find more detail coming out of higher megafpixel cameras but it's really all in how close you view a photo on the wall at. I've seen 4x6 foot images from the Z6II that Nikon printed for a show and they were amazing so I guess even 4x6 feet is not too far to take it if you handle the file correctly.

    hey thomas always great to see someone actually going out and taking photos :-) I especially appreciate who you explain your thinking process when looking for the best composition. one think made me wonder though: looking at the live histo it seems that you do not ETTR - is this on purpose or do you just think the dynamic range is sufficient so you dont need it?

    • @ThomasPetzwinkler
      @ThomasPetzwinkler  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello! Thanks for watching. :-) Okay, let cover this in order. In my years of experience shooting Nikons, ETTR isn't for them. ETTR is for Canons and FUijs that tend to block the shadows. Besides, I'd much rather lose a shadow detail than a highlight. In addition and to answer your question on dynamic range, yes, the massive DR on the Z7 holds shadow detail forever. I've rescued 3-5 stops of underexposure in the past. In addition, I never shoot to the right because of what it does to highlights and lighter tones. It compresses them severely. Mostly this has to do with the fact that the camera sensor isn't collecting data linearly. When you push those highlight further to the right, even if you keep them all in the histogram, you have compressed them fairly severely and you can't fix that. I hope this answers your question?

    • @TheGhola83
      @TheGhola83 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ThomasPetzwinkler yes it does, thanks a lot! I am currently using fuji apsc, and it already exposes in a way that it totally protects the highlights, so I can imagine the behaviour differs quite a bit

    My most used lens on my D850 was my Sigma Art 24-105 F4. I always found the range of the 24-70 too limiting. When I bought my Z7 I paired it with the 24-200 since I got tired of waiting on the 24-105 that was on the Z roadmap. And honestly I have been quite pleased with the 24-200. I was curious if it was worth the upgrade to the 24-120 F4 and I think this helped convince me. Thanks!

    This was really interesting and informative Thomas, I wanted this lens from the minute it was on the roadmap and finally got it two days ago here in Scotland.
    I absolutely love pretty much everything about it, I will be really testing it on a coming trip to the Highlands but I just did a quick check on my brick garage and it is simply superb.
    What really surprised me was how sharp wide open it is even into the corners, and stopping down to f8 to f11 was just amazing.
    I now know why I had to wait a while to get it, the dealers are getting stripped of stock overnight! Nikon definitely has a winner with this beauty, as a mainly Landscaper, an ultrawide and this will cover 90% of what I need, have subscribed and look forward to more of how you find it.

    Thanks for the very informative video. Why are you keeping the Z 24-200 f4-6.3?
    Why not using the DX mode or a 1.4x converter?

    • @ThomasPetzwinkler
      @ThomasPetzwinkler  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am keeping it for now because I do like having a do all lens for when I need it. The 24-120 is much better but when I am out shooting, I still carry the 100-400 to make up for the difference. With the 24-200, I can take one lens and get by if I need to go ultralight and don't want to carry anything else. We will see though. I frankly haven't touched the 24-200 since I bought the 24-120 and I rarely touch the 24-70 F2.8 either. Problem is that when I shoot video jobs, I frequently use 2 or 3 cameras and like to have a good range for each one so having 3 24-? lenses makes each video camera have the ability to shoot at least 24-70. For video I never use primes and rarely use the 14-30. As with all things though, your mileage may vary.

    Thanks Thomas. I am looking to buy this lens to replace the Z24-200. On that Z24-200 the corners at 24mm@F4 really look ugly - full of CA even stopped down it's still very visible, how do the corners compare to the Z24-120, hopefully that issue is almost non existant. This is the reason I am still using the Z24-70F4 for wide angle, that lens does a really good job.

    Hi. I am undecided on Z24-70/2.8 or Z24-120/4.. How does focus speed compares in lower light? Thanks

    • @ThomasPetzwinkler
      @ThomasPetzwinkler  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Well, low light focusing is always going to be a bit better at 2.8 but I don’t think enough to matter. It’s really only one stop and I haven’t found it to slow down noticeably in low light. Remember though, I don’t shoot sports very often now that my son is in college but I don’t think it would be problematic at all for that. If I had to chose, I would take in to account size, weight, price and convenience. If you don’t mind the size, weight, and price, the 2.8 will always be a little bit better. Enough to matter? That’s something only you can decide. If you absolutely need the extra stop or light, that’s also something to take in to account. If you find that lighter, slightly smaller and with extra reach are what’s important, then go with the 24-120. The extra stop isn’t much of a bother for portraiture as you’ll likely use 4-5.6 for that anyway, the longer focal length is ideal for portraiture and I believe the image quality is so close that you won’t readily be able to see the difference. I hope this helps…. My end comment will be that if I didn’t own the 24-70 2.8, after buying the 24-120, I would feel no need to have the 2.8 at all.

I have the Z7 and want the most sharpness to resolve the sensor, was thinking of upgrading to rhe 2.8z but am on the fence as another reviewer has shown that the 24-120f4 z is slightly softer than the 24-70 f4 version.

      I would say the opposite, had it now for just over a week and it is slightly sharper than the 24-70 f4, I tested it against one of the sharpest 50mm lenses the Z 50mm 1.8
      both at 50mm and was quite astounded at just how sharp the 24-120 was against it at 5.6-11 in the centre at 100% I would defy you to tell the difference.
      at the extreme edges it was slightly softer, but nothing like I would have thought up against a very sharp prime. This lens is a beauty, just what I was waiting for.

      I think the thing to remember is that the 24-70 f4 may have a slight edge in center (though I don’t really think that’s the case and if the reviewer is Ricci, he still thinks the 24-120 is a superior lens over the 24-70 f4 in pretty much all ways) but no matter what you do it tends to soften as you move toward the edges. The 24-120 doesn’t have that problem. Also, sharpness is not the end of the story. Color fidelity and rendering are all far superior to the 24-70 f4 to such an extent that all the 24-70 f4 is just not an option in my mind any longer unless you need the compactness of it. Thanks for watching!

      @@ThomasPetzwinkler Thankyou, I finally received my copy and have tested it out , from 24-50 it outperforms the 24-70f4, I would say at 70mm the 24-70 f4 has a slight edge in the corners at all apertures and at 120mm it is softer in the extreme corners at all apertures, something to be mindful of when shooting panoramas, but that an be worked around. Definitely renders colours and contrast better than the 24-70 f4, overall I'm extremely happy with this lens and it saves me from forking out extra $$$ for the 24-70 2.8 version.

    PS I have my control ring turned off except when I’m on a tripod, which is my U3 setting. Then, I use it for exposure comp.

      Yeah, I’ve turned mine off too. I just kept hitting it. Good thinking for the exposure compensation when you are using a mode where you know you have to watch out for it though!

      So, it is a bit of a secret. I only say that because of how crowded places get when you tell others about them. Shoot me an email and I will let you know what I know. :-)

      Excellent! I wish you all of the luck. It’s a hard road if you aren’t trying to please the general public. Lots of work and time for zero return save for being able to interact with folks like you! That’s why I do it, I just love the community!

    The "loud" music is a real distraction for me.
