How Black and White Photography with the X-T5 Saved the Day when Shooting Landscapes on a Sunny Day
This week we look at How Black and White Photography with the X-T5 Saved the Day when Shooting Landscapes on a Sunny Day at the Pemaquid Point Lighthouse!. It was a beautiful day and the perfect day for photography and motorcycle riding! We’ll also have a discussion about black and white photography and how it can yes, save the day but is also an art form that is a practice unto itself. Come join me for a great day of photography and riding and just enjoying this hobby we love.

      @ThomasPetzwinkler 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      That is the K&F Concept Magnetic filter system. The cover comes with the magnetic UV and Polarizer kit. The landscape kit doesn’t have the cap but includes the 3 stop, 6 stop and 10 stop nd filters and a 3 stop graduated ND filter. It’s a great system. The UV you see on the lens doesn’t come off, it’s built in to the magnetic mount and the other filters and the cap go right on to it.

    I have had this Lens about a year and a half. It is not Perfect, but it is very good. It is usually on the Camera when in the Bag. Too bad it is such a massive Air Pump, sucking Dust into the Interior of the Lens, and onto the Sensor of the Camera. My Z9 is very good at Astral Photography, making Stars, even with the Lens Cap on, with several Dozen Hot-Stuck Pixels, at any ISO above 125 and 1 sec shutter speed. A few days before Xmas in 2022, I did an Outdoor Modeling Shoot. This little Asian Honey wanted to pose outside of a very heavily decorated House, in her Birthday Suit. It was -25C, that night but she insisted, so at about 1 in the Morning... The Z9 and the 24-120 both performed well despite it being much colder than what Nikon speced. She was quite happy with the results too, but was complaining about having some Frostbite

    "The bokeh thing is a nice trick": you just summed up what I believe has been a key motivation behind this strange hobby of ours, and why f/4 seems to many of us like an unacceptable limitation for portrait work. Ultra fast apertures used primarily for background blur are nothing but a lazy gimmick, and, as a gimmick, its mass appeal is relatively recent: I date it back to when DSLRs started becoming mainstream. Before that, fast apertures were purchased to be able to shoot in lower light at higher speeds with lower grain film, DESPITE narrow depth of field, not BECAUSE of narrow depth of field. We collectively need to snap out of our fascination for bokeh and re-learn what makes a portrait interesting. This 24-120 is a perfect tool for that, indeed!

      I have been shooting for over 60yrs, and until about 5 yrs ago, had NEVER heard of the Term Bokeh, and frankly never gave a Damn about it, and still don't. Focus, Sharpness, Distortion, and Contrast are the Items that I cared/worried about.

    • @brusselssprout1
      @brusselssprout1 11 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@pjimmbojimmbo1990 exactly that! You might add shutter speed to avoid shake blur or subject movement blur: we desired that expensive f/1.4 capability to allow for shutter speeds that would avoid forcing us to use grainier film. At the same time we swore at the difficulties induced by those fast apertures to give justice to a face and body (beyond one eye) and to make the surroundings intelligible. We hated that. Now people want more blur and fancier blur, because it avoids caring about backgrounds, poses and composition, or even about the model's hair, clothes, etc. It is a cop out and hampers any attempt at storytelling. In turn, portraits have become repetitive and less and less interesting. Now that you can get f/0.95 Chinese lenses for a song and now that smartphones and/or Lightroom blur out backgrounds with a click, photographers will need to find more creative ways to differentiate their portraits. And, to go back full circle, this is why that high res compact 24-120 f/4 zoom is more than fast enough to generate great portraits.

    Good points. I am not against editing pictures but it's getting to the point where everything looks so manufactured. Everything can be changed digitally and with AI tools it will keep getting more extreme. I don't mind if that's the point, for example a matte painting in a tv show that needs to look a certain way but when it's supposed to be real, I tend to lose interest with all the editing. It feels like a product that is being made in a factory.

It is ridiculous that Nikon has refused to allow the menu banks to function like U1, U2 settings on the D750. I am continuously messing up the menu banks and have no way to go and reset them. Hi Thomas. We seem to have similar size channels and views. And some similar thoughts about photography and art. I recently began trying a concerted effort to “grow my channel” and have been frustrated that when promoting it on FB, the images I am most pleased with appear to be, at worst, the least liked, or, at best, only do well by some random chance or because they are of a location that is well known. Grrr! This is especially true of my nightscape images - they take a huge amount of planning, patience and technique, but they are not well-received by “the algorithm”. I have decided, however, to pursue what I enjoy doing, not what FB or Insta think I should do. BTW, I recently produced a video discussing whether photography is art, which you might be interested in.th-cam.com/video/eB57xsHX-Wg/w-d-xo.html

    “Fed to me to make me like it”, that is a top fact. (My opinion, of course). You’re right, i think this AI art stuff has really reached its brain washing hands to a LOT of younger people. It’s almost like that book by Neil Gaimen “American Gods”. New age art is slowly taking over, i feel a bit sad about that, i miss the original art from just the picture taken of a physical form, I personally do not want anything to do with the AI stuff. I will edit, but not add anything that isn’t there. Sometimes, i wish we could go backwards. And sure, I’d love to make money from what i do, and today, that’s becoming so hard to do, from what i can see. Give me original work. I agree, its not lost, but I feel it’s definitely being weeded out. Thanks for the video, really enjoyed it!

    Another thing to consider is the cameras themselves. There isn't as much difference between the various brands today when compared to 10-15 years ago. We've nearly reached the saturation point concerning how good modern digital cameras can be with 40-60-100 MP, backlit, IBIS, sensors. Throw in the multi-coated, IS/VR lenses, and the market begins to blur together. Add whatever can be don in post these days and, yeah, everything begins to blend into one. If you really want your images to look 'real' and/or 'true' to the scene, go back to shooting film. Simple enough.

    • @ThomasPetzwinkler

      And I do love shooting film! I need to make more film content on here. I have been so busy this last year that film hasn't been huge for TH-cam. Initially, you are presented with so-called Wow photos in the likes of 500 px and yes, initially they seem to be amazing images, but they just seem to go on and on with the same massively overprocessed feel. Some photographers readily admit they can spend hours on just one image with many dozens of layers being used. How can they possibly be a representation of what they actually took?

  • @junebug1553
    @junebug1553 29 วันที่ผ่านมา

    Wow! You really made me think in this video! I actually watched this twice since these concepts are new to me and I am eager to learn, especially from a seasoned photographer/professor such as yourself. I suppose when I look at a landscape, it's already so beautiful to me, so the goal of my photography is to replicate that beauty. I'm a birder, and sometimes when I see a bird, I am literally overtaken by its beauty. The adrenaline flows and endorphins peak, and I strive to capture that feeling in my shots, if that's even possible. My photography, so that I can stay true to myself and be authentic, must always come as close to the level of excitement I felt observing that bird in nature doing what it does. That will probably always be my "style". And I guess amateur photographers can stay true. But with professional photographers, I can fully appreciate the competitiveness that happens on social media, and I bet many really good photographers can't sleep at night feeling discouraged that they adhered to a standard, acceptable, sameness format (selling out) rather than letting their natural talents take over and dictate how they share their art. I'm so eager to hear what others think.

I will put together a video soon. Here is the list. Abelardo Morell, Edward Burtynsky, Guy Tal, Li Ye. Sabastio Salgado.

      I have talked to people who have. The high ISO abilities on the Nikons these days is so good that you can get away with the loss of one stop. Besides, this thing is so good at F4 that knowing what I just said, the image quality is just top notch wide open. Thanks for watching!

      Thank you for watching! I think that Canon trying to develop their own sensors, (or at least they did in the past) has hurt them as a company. I think of the big four are going to be great cameras no matter what though so no insult intended to Canon.

    Hi, I’m shooting with Fujifilm gfx100s but it’s not for all types of photography, and it seems Z8 is! Just I’m not sure if I switch, could I take high quality photography with Z8 (in 14bit) versus 16bit in gfx100s?! Please advise.

    • @ThomasPetzwinkler
      @ThomasPetzwinkler หลายเดือนก่อน

      The quality of the Z8 is excellent. No, it’s not going to be the same as the huge files you get from the GFX but unless you are printing or cropping in the extreme it’s not going to make a huge difference. In other words, they are going to be very close for all intents and purposes. As I said, if you need huge files, then you know you do, but I would say the image quality is as good in relative terms. For example, if you scale a 100 mp file to 45, they will pretty much be indistinguishable save for the differences in color science. 45 vs. 100 MP is always going to have a trade off so that’s what you have to ask yourself. Do you NEED 100 MP. I find that I don’t and I still print very large. I hope this helps.

    • @mrz1342
      @mrz1342 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@ThomasPetzwinkler you are right. I’m wondering how much is good iq with 14bit 45.7 mp! Even the view finder and lcd although are less than my sony a1 but still looks great! Yes, I’m pixels piping person and I don’t want to extra large print my photos. The important matter for me is deep-image quality which stands for colour rendering, dynamic range and providing light and shadows in detail. Gfx100s is great for it but is bulky with large lenses and slow. Gfx ii is faster but still not good for any kind of shooting movements. One of the advantage of z8 for me would be “all in one” camera that is giving my confidence if i want to take portraits, landscapes, astro, sports, etc.!!! That’s why i owned and changed many brands and models of cameras till now. I calculated with trinity f2.8 lenses+ 85mm and essential accessories in bag will be 5kg which I believe is great. I would like to hear more about your experience with this camera, please.

    • @ThomasPetzwinkler

      I don't think you could go wrong with the Z8 and the advantages sound like they would outweigh the disadvantages for you.

    • @mrz1342
      @mrz1342 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@ThomasPetzwinkler thank you for your reply. When I tested z8 I liked the clarity and sharpness in both viewfinder and lcd but resolution in Sony a1 and Gfx are almost 10m, dot per inch and so different. I’m wondering if higher resolution for viewfinder and lcd is an advantage or not? And is it previewing the actual image that I shot and processed by sensor, or it’s just for the time of looking at a subject before shooting? It’s very important to shoot what you see and to see what you shoot! That is why mirrorless camera is more accurate for photography I believe. So, what’s this matter in Z8?

    • @ThomasPetzwinkler
      @ThomasPetzwinkler หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@mrz1342 the viewfinder and rear screen have absolutely nothing to do with the image being recorded by the camera except for to show you a representation of what the camera is seeing. There is really not much accuracy to it. Understanding how your histogram works is the most Important any way to learn how to work with your sensor. That and the Z8 definitely has better image quality than the Sony without a doubt. The Sony is really good in many ways but Nikon really concentrates on maximizing the final image quality level.

    Hi Tom - Great video. Thanks for sharing your experiences. I was shooting similar scenarios that you were. I was originally planning to fly to TX from CT (plans that I had set in motion 2 yrs ago with some friends from TX) but cancelled my flight last week due to the weather forecast and pivoted to VT/NH area. I ended up in a field on the side of the road in Bloomfield VT and found a spot by a small river. I had the D850 w/500mm PF shooting the closeup shots. I then planned a wide landscape shot that I was taking with the Z9 with the river as a foreground. The plan was to shoot at somewhere between 14mm and 24mm to capture a foreground and then capture the different phases of the eclipse as it traversed across the sky and stack them all together. However, I came to realize that at 14-24mm the sun will be so small that you won't be able to discern the different phases of the eclipse in the overall composition, so decided to shoot the eclipse images at 105mm (maybe somewhere in between would have been better?). Unfortunately, this meant that I couldn't capture the complete traverse of the moon from start to finish all in the same field of view, so had to reposition the camera for post totality. Haven't had a chance to put it all together yet so not sure if it will even work out. And finally, I had the Zf set up to shoot a video. The close up shots in totality were amazing. The solar flares were very cool and the fact that I could see the corona AND a solar flare projecting out.... with the naked eye.... from 93 million miles away, blew me away. This was much better than the 2017 total eclipse that I saw in Madras OR (with 100k of my closest friends). I am completely non-religious/spiritual. I'm just in awe at the sheer size of it all... that I could see the corona that extends for millions of miles, and a solar flare so clearly that is dozens of times bigger than the Earth.... as you mentioned with regard to your experience to seeing the Grand Canyon, it's hard to explain. Hopefully you'll get a chance to experience a solar eclipse in totality at some point. One word of caution, once you do, they can become addictive. We're planning for Spain as well... and Australia in 2028.

    • @ThomasPetzwinkler
