A very realistic sibling relationship. One who thinks they have to be an “adult”: study hard and do all the things they are told and hate. They envy the other sibling for seeming childish doing whatever they pleased and were passionate about. While in the perspective of the other sibling, they are jealous of constantly hearing the parent praising the hard working studious child.
its more sibling rivalry i mean if you grew up with siblings, fights like this its common.. she envies her because Kumiko can cook better than her but her older sister also tries to act more mature than Kumiko when she too has her own flaws. Kumiko looked up to her when it came to Euphonium because she brought her into it and taught her like a role model losing that passion affection her sister had caused this rift between them. There was a few times her sister would barge in and annoy Kumiko and be against her playing saying it wont last forever.. crushing her spirit to be fair i understand both sides its like a phase so to speak and her older sister wanted her to accept reality.. the older sister was expecting she would eventually grow out of it and become like her in a similar situation but if Kumiko is passionate about playing there's no reason why she should stop. anyways just my opinion on why these two had fights/disagreement
I have seen your comments everywhere. And I really can't tell you're trolling or being serious lol The reason why they fight is bcuz they love each other, and like Mamiko admitted she was jealous of Kumiko bcuz when she grows up her parents always have higher standards for her and she had to do whatever they planed. She had to give up what she really wanted and played her role as a good grown-up kid, and so when she heard Kumiko playing the CD/euphonium she was annoyed, bcuz we can assume those were the moments when she was struggling to make her own way and quit uni. Does it mean she discourages Kumiko to quit euphonium or want kumiko to accept reality? I think no, bcuz Mamiko showed up at the final competition and showed supports(and she had to pay her own flight ticket all the way to another prefecture, and it's really difficult to get the tickets. Which means without a real effort you can't just go and listen, Mamiko certainly showed her sincerity to show support). And in this scene, Mamiko opens up to Kumiko why she decided to quit uni and tell Kumiko don't do things that makes herself regret. I don't think Kumiko understood right away, but until she saw Asuka senpai conversation with the other third year in the room. It was that moment she understands Mamiko's feeling, and also her feelings to Asuka senpai; and despite she doesn't want Asuka senpai to regret in the future, Kumiko also speaks for herself that she wants to play Euphonium with Asuka senpai in the final so Kumiko herself won't regret too. If you rmb the last scene in S2 ep12, it is the episode where Kumiko wraps up she likes Euphonium, bcuz she has always admired Mamiko and wanted to play music with her. But now Kumiko doesn't just play Euphonium bcuz of her sister, she has found her own reason to play euphonium. Deep down she would love Mamiko as the role model sister who she had always admired for, and she would miss Mamiko and support her even they will have to separate and go on a different road now. So I think this Kumiko and Mamiko thing is actually a lovely sister story. Instead of some sibling rivalry so they need to argue or so. They spoke for themselves that they love each other.
This is purely my insights from watching the anime only, but from what I see, Mamiko was the cool older sister for most of Kumiko's childhood. Not just for Kumiko, but also Shuuichi and Aoi. Mamiko was such a strong presence in their lives that all three followed in her footsteps in joining the wind ensemble and picking up instruments. Shuuichi playing the trombone was directly inspired by Mamiko. And Mamiko served as Kumiko's mentor in playing the euphonium as wind instruments have similar basics. However, as Kumiko grew, Mamiko faced problems in life that led to her ideal older sister facade crumble over time. As the eldest child, she had expectations and pressure to perform well as a student, and being a talented musician was considered a distraction to that. Imagine that in the midst of preparing for nationals, Kumiko was ordered to abandon the euphonium, the wind ensemble and to study only. Imagine the angst it would bring. While Mamiko never had to deal with that kind of stakes, her abandoning the trombone definitely hurt her in ways Kumiko at the time could never imagine. As the two sisters grew, seeing their parents give Kumiko the leeway she never enjoyed frustrated Mamiko in ways she never expected, hence her antagonistic attitude throughout most of Season 1 and 2. Naturally, Kumiko, inexperienced as she is, yet ever insightful, saw the similarities between Mamiko and Asuka. Having seen firsthand what would happen if one gave up their dreams, began to get emotionally invested in Asuka's story and circumstances, hence the tearful outburst under the walkway. And once she saw Asuka resolve her issues, Kumiko gained the resolve to make up with her beloved older sister. Mamiko, still being the cool older sister at her core, had made the first steps to reconcile with that failed cooking dinner. And at the Season 2's end, Kumiko was able to passionately declare her love of the euphonium and music, both of which are things Mamiko had passed down to her, gifts that Kumiko had finally learned to cherish.

Don't worry, Mamiko. Later on, you'll become a beloved ninja in a mecha/30-minute toy commercial anime.
Uhh... what?
Aya Fujisawa from Gundam Build Divers?
@Zyrame you're not wrong
This is probably one of my favorite scenes in the entire show.
Thats some amazing hair running in the family
Mamiko's hair would also fluff up if she had her hair as short as Kumiko and vice versa
久美子の姉ちゃん美人、、
I love this anime, the conflicts feel so natural and with interesting topics
