You certainly learnt your Scouting lessons well James. Be Prepared! Even had a bee keepers head dress in your kit. Just in case you came across a plague of suicidal flies who were keen to have their last meal before they die! Love your style.
Thanks for the "truthful" episode! 😀 Also thanks for the detailed anchoring methods and techniques in your episodes, very helpful. Anchoring in the inlets of the PNW can be pretty tricky!
Haha we had fun with this one. The flies really are a small price to pay! Agreed anchoring up here is tricky, lots of challenges. It’s been a big learning experience! Our next episode is about exactly that :)
What can I say that hasn't all ready been said; your videos are extraordinary! Thank you skipper for inviting me along and thanks to your lovely first mate for making life interesting. ❤. -Curt
Thank you, the fish really made our day! Two for one deal because you get to eat delicious salmon and have a pretty stellar chance at catching some Dungeness :)
So no flies at the hot spring itself? That is good! Yep, extending your arms horizontally and then up and down is signal for distress, it is part of the boater safety exam. Good on you for helping him out! Do you actually have a preferred book to identify PNW fish? . Some decades ago back in Québec I was into motorcycling. One time we decided to ride north east to the back country and go wild camping near a lake. The day we left was quite hot and humid but since we were going to do a lot of Highway we decided to war our full leathers (an anomaly in that era!). When we arrived after a few hour of riding and then maybe 20 minutes of trail riding, we were hot and sweaty. It was full of pine trees smelling nice! We quickly stripped and jumped skinny dipping in the lake only to resurfaced in a black cloud of deer flies chewing at our faces. We dived back in the water thinking "what are going to do??". We resurfaced and made a dash for shore and our leather, full of flies themselves, jumped on our bikes half naked and drove back to the road to dress properly. We were chewed-up alright, those deer fly are nasty. Cheers.
No surprisingly enough the hot springs weren't so buggy! But it was hot enough to make tea! We were so caught up in our dramas our first thought was 'is he trying to warn us about the flies?!!! just kidding we absolutely recognized right away it was a signal of distress. 🎣We don't have a good identification resource at the moment, does anyone have any good recommendations? We just had a pic on our phones of the different salmon that we used for this one. hahah oh my gosh you guys got swarmed good! Respect for the naked bike ride, that is awesome. I could see us going for a fast bike adventure one day! Thanks for sharing that made us chuckle, cheers!
I was told by an old commercial fisherman that the flies are worse wherever fish packing boats used to stay. It’s funny you can go 10k in either direction and not see one fly. I think my favourite hot spring is Europa in Gardener Canal, my favourite fiord as well.
Only the second time we've seen a big pod like that, I think they were white sided pacific dolphins, was not expecting them that far up the inlet, very cool!
Nothing worse than biting flies. Love your photography including the drone shots I always watch your videos on the big tv for the best experience. Oh by the way, Allison you said on a previous video that you didn’t have a bikini body but I beg to differ. 😊
Really great video. The details you share about anchoring at the end there had me riveted. I hope that when we start our channel we're half as entertaining as you are.
Awh, thank you. So glad you enjoyed it! Awesome that you find the anchoring rambles riveting! Not everyone finds it as interesting as we do! Are you sailing currently, or dreaming about it?! Ps the entertaining is all in the editing 😉
@@AllisonandJamesSailing we’re not sailing yet. The house is conditionally sold, next step is moving into the RV to get us to the coast. Then finding the right boat. Then finally getting on board. We both miss the ocean terribly and can’t wait to get ourselves off grid
@basildraws very relatable, we were there not that long ago! You’re taking big steps to get you in that direction, that’s awesome! Hope you can get back to the ocean here very soon🌊
Oh those are deer fly- they seem to get worse the further north you get. The mosquitoes get bigger too. Especially inland. I think they are a slightly smaller version of the horse fly. Hopefully a bit of wind will remove the smell of human activity that attracts them. Campfire smoke helps get rid of them (if you're camping). Nice video you guys! Very envious and can't wait to try something similar someday.
Luckily we have those mosquito nets!haha Not sure a strong breeze would have gotten rid of our smell when we arrived 😂 Summer fire ban was in effect so the only solution was to go sailing! Glad you enjoyed it, hope to see you out here soon!
there are double sided tape (which might be literally that simple) that you put on the back of your hat. We tried them once and deer flies are bizarrely attracted to them because they always land on the back of your head first...
Great thumbnail. It’s hard to enjoy the surroundings while you’re literally being eaten one chunk at a time. Was it too hot to get in this time? Cooler weather would definitely make that paradise and then maybe no flies. Love you guys. Talk to you from NZ 😘😘😘
haha thank you, that was James handywork! He's getting more proficient in photoshop! The flies were annoying but the netting definitely helped us retain blood. Yes it was ultra hot this day so we didn't get in, but we did come back around during a low pressure system and had a much better experience (a future episode :) Safe travels to NZ you guys!!

We got the bee hats for exactly this reason! Got to expect the unexpected round here!

Awe thank you so much for writing us every week! We appreciate it, and feel lucky to have you along with us! 🤍
Absolutely beautiful, that inlet is pretty amazing, seems like a sweet cruising ground. ☁🌊⛵
Stunning cruising ground! We can't believe we hardly seen any other boats!
Very nice video, what a nice fish ! love the size of your spare anchor, way to go !
Thank you, the fish really made our day! Two for one deal because you get to eat delicious salmon and have a pretty stellar chance at catching some Dungeness :)
Wow so many bugs but beautiful place. Tyvm
Yes small price to pay for getting to enjoy such an incredible place. Thank you for watching!

Beautiful episode as always! Thank you…
Awe thank you, really glad you enjoyed it!
🪰🪰👎 everything else💙 again👏
haha we were bug free after that and life was good again. Thanks for watching!

Luckily this was the last swarm we encountered! Awesome, we’ll have to check that one out as we continue North, thanks for the suggestion!
Love the sneery and the wild life, those dolphins were amazing. See ya next week
Only the second time we've seen a big pod like that, I think they were white sided pacific dolphins, was not expecting them that far up the inlet, very cool!
You’re nailing it to James, I can dig it
You guys rock!
Awh, thanks so much Paul, cheers!
Imagine bathing in that hot spring and then rolling in the snow and back into the tub ... repeat ... exhilarating!
How we wish there was snow up there, it would have kept the flies away 😂 thanks for watching!!
We did this at the Lakelse Hotsprings near Terrace BC.

haha Lifting an 80lb anchor & chain up from the ocean floor on the daily definitely helps fit the bod, cheers!

@@AllisonandJamesSailing Thanks. I'm sure we can do it. We're terrified of course, but we're determined.
That’s what it takes. For sure you’ve got this!! Reach out along the way if you have any questions that we can help answer :)
Much better end without the flies. Thanks for explaining the anchoring.
Agreed, worth all the effort to get away! Glad you enjoyed it, cheers!
Great video as always. Thanks for sharing. bzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
haha! Great hearing for you as always, buzz buzzzz

I love the part about murdering the flies you crack me up woman awesome job 😂
haha glad we could make you chuckle! We had fun with this one

These buggers were landing everywhere so maybe we would cover ourselves in double sided sticky tape? Haha thanks for that, cheers mate!

Burn coffee wrap it up in a filter paper, works a treat
You talkin bout warding off flies or smoking coffee beans?!
Never mind gearing up with foul weather clothes … you needed a couple of bee keepers’ outfits. ( …and a shotgun ? 😂 )
Hahah totally, we skimped out and regretted only buying the head pieces 😂 Seriously considering getting our P.A.L tho
thats awful about the flies, what month was this? the sail up was beautiful though!
This would have been mid-late July. So lovely up there despite the flies
In Alaska they call them Moose Flies, if they bite you, you know it pretty quick. ☠️
Lucky for us we didn’t deal with too many up in AK haha Thanks for watching, cheers!
But then I just got stoned too.🤷🏻♂️
Glad you're enjoying! The algorithm is also enjoying all these comments! Thanks that helps us out!
Those are horse flies not black flies.
both are types of biting flies
Horseflies.
Pesky buggers!
