    You certainly learnt your Scouting lessons well James. Be Prepared! Even had a bee keepers head dress in your kit. Just in case you came across a plague of suicidal flies who were keen to have their last meal before they die! Love your style.

      We got the bee hats for exactly this reason! Got to expect the unexpected round here!

    Thanks for the "truthful" episode! 😀 Also thanks for the detailed anchoring methods and techniques in your episodes, very helpful. Anchoring in the inlets of the PNW can be pretty tricky!

      Haha we had fun with this one. The flies really are a small price to pay!
      Agreed anchoring up here is tricky, lots of challenges. It’s been a big learning experience! Our next episode is about exactly that :)

    So no flies at the hot spring itself? That is good!
    Yep, extending your arms horizontally and then up and down is signal for distress, it is part of the boater safety exam.
    Good on you for helping him out!
    Do you actually have a preferred book to identify PNW fish?
    .
    Some decades ago back in Québec I was into motorcycling. One time we decided to ride north east to the back country and go wild camping near a lake.
    The day we left was quite hot and humid but since we were going to do a lot of Highway we decided to war our full leathers (an anomaly in that era!).
    When we arrived after a few hour of riding and then maybe 20 minutes of trail riding, we were hot and sweaty. It was full of pine trees smelling nice!
    We quickly stripped and jumped skinny dipping in the lake only to resurfaced in a black cloud of deer flies chewing at our faces. We dived back in the water thinking "what are going to do??".
    We resurfaced and made a dash for shore and our leather, full of flies themselves, jumped on our bikes half naked and drove back to the road to dress properly.
    We were chewed-up alright, those deer fly are nasty.
    Cheers.

    • @AllisonandJamesSailing
      @AllisonandJamesSailing  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No surprisingly enough the hot springs weren't so buggy! But it was hot enough to make tea!
      We were so caught up in our dramas our first thought was 'is he trying to warn us about the flies?!!!
      just kidding we absolutely recognized right away it was a signal of distress.
      🎣We don't have a good identification resource at the moment, does anyone have any good recommendations?
      We just had a pic on our phones of the different salmon that we used for this one.
      hahah oh my gosh you guys got swarmed good! Respect for the naked bike ride, that is awesome. I could see us going for a fast bike adventure one day! Thanks for sharing that made us chuckle, cheers!

    I was told by an old commercial fisherman that the flies are worse wherever fish packing boats used to stay. It’s funny you can go 10k in either direction and not see one fly. I think my favourite hot spring is Europa in Gardener Canal, my favourite fiord as well.

    • @AllisonandJamesSailing
      @AllisonandJamesSailing  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Luckily this was the last swarm we encountered! Awesome, we’ll have to check that one out as we continue North, thanks for the suggestion!

      Only the second time we've seen a big pod like that, I think they were white sided pacific dolphins, was not expecting them that far up the inlet, very cool!

      @@AllisonandJamesSailing we’re not sailing yet. The house is conditionally sold, next step is moving into the RV to get us to the coast. Then finding the right boat. Then finally getting on board. We both miss the ocean terribly and can’t wait to get ourselves off grid

      @AllisonandJamesSailing  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @basildraws very relatable, we were there not that long ago! You’re taking big steps to get you in that direction, that’s awesome! Hope you can get back to the ocean here very soon🌊

    Oh those are deer fly- they seem to get worse the further north you get. The mosquitoes get bigger too. Especially inland. I think they are a slightly smaller version of the horse fly. Hopefully a bit of wind will remove the smell of human activity that attracts them. Campfire smoke helps get rid of them (if you're camping). Nice video you guys! Very envious and can't wait to try something similar someday.

    • @AllisonandJamesSailing
      @AllisonandJamesSailing  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Luckily we have those mosquito nets!haha Not sure a strong breeze would have gotten rid of our smell when we arrived 😂 Summer fire ban was in effect so the only solution was to go sailing!
      Glad you enjoyed it, hope to see you out here soon!

    there are double sided tape (which might be literally that simple) that you put on the back of your hat. We tried them once and deer flies are bizarrely attracted to them because they always land on the back of your head first...

    • @AllisonandJamesSailing
      @AllisonandJamesSailing  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      These buggers were landing everywhere so maybe we would cover ourselves in double sided sticky tape? Haha thanks for that, cheers mate!

    Great thumbnail. It’s hard to enjoy the surroundings while you’re literally being eaten one chunk at a time. Was it too hot to get in this time? Cooler weather would definitely make that paradise and then maybe no flies. Love you guys. Talk to you from NZ 😘😘😘

    • @AllisonandJamesSailing
      @AllisonandJamesSailing  ปีที่แล้ว

      haha thank you, that was James handywork! He's getting more proficient in photoshop!
      The flies were annoying but the netting definitely helped us retain blood.
      Yes it was ultra hot this day so we didn't get in, but we did come back around during a low pressure system and had a much better experience (a future episode :)
      Safe travels to NZ you guys!!
