Jim's layout truly is a masterpiece. It runs well and looks fantastic. This is what friendship is all about. Sharing what he has done in a short time is just remarkable. Being friends with Jim just about our whole life we learn from each other. Gary, you nailed it again. It is a pleasure to call you our friend. There is a time in our lives we meet special people and through model railroading we do. We share the hobby because we love it. It's not the size of your layout it is the quality of your layout. Jim's layout is in that category of awesome.
It was my pleasure and honor to see this fine work of craftsmanship and engineering in person working flawlessly. You and Jim are truly great friends and I can't express what an honor it is to call you both great friends of mine. You both opened your homes and layouts to me, and for that, I am truly honored. The layouts, you guys, and your wives are awesome. I am proud to be friends with all of you. His layout is spectacular, and you can truly see how well he took notes from your track work skills and teachings. The trains ran so well. Thanks for the comments, compliments, and stay safe out there. Happy Thanksgiving.
Good afternoon gentlemen!!! Big fan of BOTH layouts!!! I don't feel crazy not really wanting to go the DCC route. Yeah it's nice, but like you said Todd, in order for DCC to run like it's SUPPOSED to, almost EVERY PIECE of track must be wired...Too much work I'd rather wire 700 pcs of Atlas flex and have smooth running consistently. I am in front of a computer, machines and electrical tech ALL DAY and I have toddlers lol...mechanical is the way, fun yet challenging...I am in the armchair planning stage after having built my first layout, the Winston-Salem Westbound Rwy., very loosely based on the NS, Yadkin Valley, High Point Thomasville and Denton Rwy., and the Winston Salem Southbound. The route starts in North Winston Yard and naturally headed West through the foothills (it's ALWAYS the FALL season here), through Wilkesboro, NC into the Appalachians with a line breaking off to Asheville, NC. A bridge route, "Through the Appalachians, Not Around Them", thank you DRG&W lol...WSWB runs trains short, fast and often. I want to continue that tradition since I love NC and Winston Salem is my hometown but now I am in Mid-Ohio. VERY HEAVY ACTION between Cleveland and Columbus, including Marysville, Bucyrus, Crestline, Berea, Fontaine, etc. I'm loyal to the Carolina way of railroading but this is great!!!...choices, choices, choices...I am an N scaler by heart The ONLY real drawback is the vehicle selection, modern tractor trailers and locomotives like HO's selection. Both of your layouts confirm the inspiration to build my layout chest height and the clean look so that my and my lovely "property manager's" (whom I love and has the patience of Job with me, God bless her soul lol) office space can fit underneath lol...Jim you literally took sage advice and ran with it...Thanks to both of you and Big G has gained another subscriber, even I should've hit that button a LONG TIME AGO lol...thanks man!!!...this is great!!!
Thanks for the Subscription, comments, compliments, and I hope you stay safe out there. I look forward to hopefully see your layout getting started soon. I started my channel to log the progress over the past 4 years. I have several videos out that I hope will hope you along your planning and building phases. Good luck and see you on the next video!@@upperechelons6403
Gary I am speechless thank you so much for doing such a good job on this it is hard to explain how much people mean to the Hobby like you Roy Todd and the rest of the Gang thanks to the internet this is a great way to share are layouts and the hobby with everyone thanks for coming up again Gary I really did enjoy your visit
I enjoyed every minute of it! I was thrilled to be invited to your layout and home. Just hanging out with you is always such a great time. Your layout is fantastic and runs very smoothly. Your attention to the trackwork shows. You should be very proud of your layout and skills. Thank you for the invitation, friendship, and most importantly, sharing this fine hobby with us! Stay safe out there my friend and Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family, including those 14000 turkeys!
The internet really has been a great source of information for model railroading . It's interesting that he uses foam as much as he does , im gonna look into that for sure. Im still painting my dream train room but got tubs full of ho scale stuff ready to go lol. Thanks again for a great video , you really are a big reason I will eventually have a good start on my own layout. Happy Thankgiving my friend .
I'm glad I can help bring these layouts to my viewers. I love it when I get tips and advice from them and their layouts. Thank you for the compliments and I am thrilled that I am helping inspire more people to start their layouts too. Stay safe out there, and Happy Thanksgiving to you too, my friend.
Thanks for the comment and compliment Vinny. I hope all is well with you. Jim has a wonderful layout and collection. I was honored and thrilled to be invited to his beautiful layout. It runs amazingly! Stay safe out there.
He really has worked fast to build a masterpiece. I was really blown away at how much he has collected too. He was able to determine what he wanted and really went after it. He has done a fantastic job. Thanks for the comment and compliment. Stay safe out there.
Thank you for watching, the comments and compliments. He has really captured the feel of the Northeast, and the layout runs phenomenally. Stay safe out there.
It looks amazing, runs beautifully, and the owner is a great guy. I was blown away by the whole experience. Thank you for your comment and compliment, stay safe out there.
Great layout and story. Super job in photographing the entire layout and the narration Gary. Been a long time no see, but love your stuff each and every time you post and I find some time to watch. CONGRATS JIM YOU SHOULD BE VERY PROUD !
Thank you Art, and yes it has been a little while. I have been doing some traveling, as of late. Everytime I come through your neck of the woods, I think about you, and how I need to come see you soon. I am always traveling out that way when the shop is closed. Ihope all is well with you and your family. Thank you for the comments and compliments, stay safe out there. Happy Thanksgiving!
This layout just goes to show, that you don't have to have a lot of space for a railroad empire. Attention to trackwork was mastered by Jim and it shows the way the trains ran the entire time with no accidents. Jim is a great friend and model railroader. Thanks for the comment and compliments, stay safe out there. Happy Thanksgiving!
Awesome layout! Jims technique for laying track would work for N, maybe HO, but it would never work with O gauge, the weight and tracktive effort of O gauge would tear the track up if the track is not nailed down. But this N gauge is fantastic, I'm very Impressed Jim!
I could see where the weight would be a huge issue there. Thank you for the insight on O scale. A whole train in N Scale, probably isn't as much weight as an O scale engine. Thanks for the comment and compliment, stay safe out there.
It is a really beautiful layout in person. He has an eye for detail. It packs a lot of layout in a very small space, without overpowering the space. Thanks for the comment and compliment. Stay safe out there.
I really like your railroad, I live in Southern California and I run N scale and basically have 9'8" by 16' to work with, that's why I like N scale. Like I said great Railroad.
Jim has a wonderful layout, and I am glad to call him a true friend in the Hobby. He has done a lot in a very short time. Thanks for the comment, compliment, and stay safe out there.
I have seen a lot of N scale layouts and they usually look toylike or run poorly. Jim has changed my opinion on what can be done with N scale and it’s clear that it is an alternative to HO and a perfect fit for his 12x11.5 foot bedroom layout. Quality trackwork there. Thank you for sharing his layout with us.
Jim has definitely made a work of art with his beautiful layout and masterpiece. I was thrilled to see this firsthand. He has an eye for details, and definitely made a bedroom size layout look a lot bigger. Thank you for your comments and compliments, stay safe out there.
All of of his rail joints are not soldered. He just offsets the rail joints from each other, nails the track down in place and waits for the glue to dry. Once dry, he pulls the nails back out and is ready to scenery or run trains. Thanks for the question and stay safe out there.
Thanks for the question, and I am not sure about the switches, but I am pretty sure that he doesn't use them. I will try get you the answer, as to how he switches the layout. Stay safe out there.
hello there thanks for watching and all of the very nice comments , no none of my switches are powered i do have a couple of remote switches on the layout but they are not wired. i throw all my switches by hand. the yard ladder is atlas custom line with caboose hobbies ground throws the rest are pecos that just snap over and hold quite well on thier own.
I know from my own experience with a bed room size layout, it is a major space constraint to be able to model both. Thanks for the comment and stay safe out there.

I have the same bedroom size layout. Double deck with HO on the lower deck, and N-scale above. Only trouble is, I've got older, and standing for the N-scale is getting tougher. However, I gives me a lot of space to work with, considering the limitations of the room.
Nice Collection.Keep it up👍👍👍👍.
I loved seeing all of his collection and the layout ran flawlessly. Thanks for the comment and compliment, stay safe out there.

Remarkable what he's accomplished in such a short time. This is another beautiful layout!

This is superb. The mix of rolling stock and engines scream Northeast! Thanks for sharing!

Do you Solder most of your Joiners?

Thanks for the question, and I am not sure about the switches, but I am pretty sure that he doesn't use them. I will try get you the answer, as to how he switches the layout. Stay safe out there.
He said he used Peco turnouts and had some old school Atlas turnouts too.
hello there thanks for watching and all of the very nice comments , no none of my switches are powered i do have a couple of remote switches on the layout but they are not wired. i throw all my switches by hand. the yard ladder is atlas custom line with caboose hobbies ground throws the rest are pecos that just snap over and hold quite well on thier own.
I’m Surprised you didn’t Go Home and N Scale in One Room.
I know from my own experience with a bed room size layout, it is a major space constraint to be able to model both. Thanks for the comment and stay safe out there.
