    Coach Stone, what a necessary video this is. The number one poorly coached and poorly studied skill being taught to junior volleyball player in america is arm swing mechanics. And the primary issue is the feedback to "get your elbow up". If juniors coaches taught Low to High.. it would save a lot of players from shoulder surgeries and there would be a lot more heat and range out there

    The techniques modeled & explained here are remarkably similar to the methods of Chinese coach Dr. Lian Lu who was the head of the Olympic Coaches Commission. He also was also a long time assistant at UC Santa Barbara under Kathy Gregory, head coach at Cal St. Northridge in the 90s, & the national team coach for Mexico. He was a great friend of Pepperdine/Team USA's gold medal winning head coach Marv Dunphy. Dr. Lu was one of the brightest & most articulate minds in volleyball I have ever known. This video is outstanding.

    These drills are awesome. I am 34 and recently began playing Volleyball. It is tough to learn. I made a lot of mistakes in the beginning and now it is super tough gettin rid of them. My hit was always weak and all over the place. The whole movement felt wrong all the time but nobody told me what I did wrong. Now I know my shoulder was to stiff and I was told my whole arm needs to be stiff and full of tension. Now that I know my elbow is the driving force and not my shoulder, things have cleared up for me. And the way the shoulder is placed in this movement pattern is perfect to avoid Impingement, which was always a big problem for me. Well, it will take ages for me to learn the new movement pattern, but it is not too late. After doing a couple of these exercises at home I noticed that I also gained more control over the ball when forearm passing or setting. That was pretty weird because I didnt expect that. I am happy that I stumbled across this video, so thanks a lot.

    Jim, This is a fantastic video an incorporates beautifully the physics to create a smooth and powerful arm swing. It is so critical to involve the core and more powerful back muscles in the swing and avoid a "shoulder only" swing. This is key in preventing overuse injuries in the shoulder. My daughter remembers the shoulder back concept by saying she's "wrinking her scapulae together", storing the loaded potential energy of her trunk and back and then releasing them

    This video is gold. That been said I been coaching and still playing for longer than what I want to admit. I coached college girls and high school boys. While I agreed with 95% of everything he said, the one difference in coaching boys and girls is where the boys make contact with the ball vs girls. Boys proportionally jump higher than girls, so if you look at her contact with the ball is almost aligned straight with her neck. With boys, you always teach them to hit in front of their heads. Also girls relly way more on rolling the wrist to create the spin down for the ball. That's the difference in the proportion of how much higher boys jump. Boys are literally hitting the straight down with pretty much no roll. That's because we hit in front of the face with arm extended so the angle of the contact is already at a decline. Girls have to hit at the highest point of reach with the arm stretched out and apply some wrist. You might think is minimal but just watch men in slow-mo making contact vs women.

    Great video! I have played and coached for almost four decades. The area I teach a little different is the location of where athletes pull the arm back. My experience has been having the athlete swing both arms hard above the head increases and maximizes the athletes jump before pulling the arm back to hit. You can still pull your elbow low and swing high. Lots of great information in this video.

    • @PokeKongen
      @PokeKongen 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That actually makes a lot of sense :) So you would say that as soon as both arms have reached peak height, then you should pull your elbow back, instead of doing it mid jump/armswing?

With the right combination of motivation, motor learning science, neuroscience and sports psychology, the possibilities for learning get amazingly expanded! :)
      Don't let your hopes go down but get to work instead! :)
      EDIT: If you want some help on the way, I now have a video up that is pretty helpful to give an idea of what the process is like. It's called "Is the acuspike volleyball spike machine worthless?!" on my channel! :)

  • @marvinabt4964

    Do note that alot of professional athletes intentionally dip slightly to the side on alot of hits, pulling their arm to the side instead of to the center if they want a higher ball contact. If you're standing, you will find you can reach higher when you angle yourself, not staying tall. However I'd imagine being stabilized in that position requires more strength, hence the advice to stay straight. I personally find I hit more balls when I stay straight, but I was confused when I saw professional athletes doing something else, especially when serving. If you disagree just watch any professional match on TH-cam. The important thing is that the elbow circle movement remains at a 90° angle to the ground, not swinging left or right, leading to missing the ball/bad hits or shoulder problems. I can recommend recording your own hits and then comparing that to what the professionals or semiprofessionals do and finding the difference in movement and movement timing, not in jump height and spiking speed. (When are they pulling the arms back/forward/up)

    Amazing video! Except one in my eyes huge mistake: saying it's impossible to change your armswing after 18 or 20 or so. First time I found this video I saw that first part, thought to myself "Oh yeah? What about last year when I completely redid my armswing mechanics in 2-3 weeks at age 28?!", lost interest and stopped watching.
    Fortunately, I now a couple of months later ventured into this video again, ignored the beginning part and saw one of the best videos on armswing ever, a LOT of good thoughts and ideas in this one, thank you!
    I just hope you don't underestimate the plasticity of the brain also in older people! With the right personality/motivation combined with some motor learning/neuroscience/sports psychology a LOT is possible also in an older age. It's probably still easier durig those child/teenage years so I completely agree we should get as many kids as possible on the right track early, but hope is not lost in older age.
    Again thanks a lot for the video, I actually hope I'll be able to meet you some day! :)

  • @TuanNguyenHealthGenie
    @TuanNguyenHealthGenie 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    All is great except the start of the arm swing. When you start with elbow low and rotate up and high will cause shoulder fatigue as well elbow problems. Swinging with elbows going high and as your rotate, you’ve set yourself up with a proper follow through that hits the ball at the optimum length and power. Furthermore, when the elbow swings back low, cutting the ball is more difficult and if the cut is successful, it will again hurt the elbow and shoulder. Great video though... just careful with the initiation of the swing.

      Where did you find that information? I have heard the exact opposite from a colleague. He found out in one of his studies that starting with ellbow high frequently results in impinchment syndrome. And although I prefer the ellbow high approach - because I think it makes ball control a lot easier - starting ellbow low certainly gives me the feeling to have more power. Your thoughts? @Tuan Nguyen

    When watching her arm swings in minute 9:48 and following I would say: be careful if your girlfriend is an active volleyball player... she could deliver pretty hard face slaps... :-)
