Good to see there's a 30 series Case tractor to keep all those John Deere's in line! But she be a big ether challenge to get her fired up when she's -30 out. Those early Diesel tractors sure don't like the cold! Ether is your friend in the cold but, not too much! Lol...

My goodness sir if I had the room to tell a few stories! We really need to get a face to face visit in before I don't remember all this stuff anymore.....:)
My grandfather raised non-registered Percheron draft horses north of Churchbridge, south of Calder area. My late father hated horses and bought grandfather's first tractor when he was 15 - after an argument with my grandfather over the horses! When we got into horses here in BC, Dad just shook his head and muttered!
Ether...... hired hand slammed the hood shut on a Massey 35 we had with the 3 cylinder Perkins. The little under hood tool box is right beside the air intake on them... Guess where the ether can was stored? Guess what happened when the hood slammed onto the ether can QDM?
Never saw a 3 cylinder Perkins pull 4000rpm before that...sounded like it anyways!!!
Thanks for the memories sir, I appreciate your efforts at keeping the rest of the world informed at a way of life that is so vital to everyone who enjoys eating.

My grandmother was born on our Needville farm. Back in the early 1900's my great-Grandpa B had two huge horses, Belgians or Percherons, can't recall which, named Jim and Molly... they were his plow horses, and you needed big horses for our hard gumbo clay soil! It was Grandma's job as a little girl to feed the horses... She told me how she used to have to walk one of them around in circles pulling a turnstile, which was a big gear turned by a long pole hooked to the horse, which turned a smaller gear turning a shaft that went out of the circle just above the ground, which turned the stationary hay baler. She led the horse in circles to turn the works which turned the hay baler. Anyway, she was always worried because the hired man who was forking hay into the bale chamber through an opening up on top, he would always use his foot to push the wad of hay down into the bale chamber when the plunger was retracted, before it started its next stroke... and she was worried that he'd get his foot caught and leg broke or cut off by the plunger as it came back, because that horse had a lot of pull on the works! Grandpa B made a LOT of money selling hay to the Army in World War 1 for a dollar a bale, which was BIG money back then, as MOST of the transport in the Army was still horses back then, and the horse cavalry! Motorized was just getting started!
Course Grandpa B was also the first farmer in Fort Bend county to own a tractor... a Fordson, and then later on he bought an F-12 and an F-20. Later! OL J R :)

    Here in Ontario,for our ether starting tricks,we;
    1) wire in a switch directly to the starter so you can stand outside and start. Make sure it's in neutral.
    2) tape ether can to intake and tape open the sprayer. Just remember to lightly tape it up so the vibrations of the engine will just shake the can off when and if it starts....other wise you then gotta jump back out of the cab and hope you don't fry the piston rings.
    3) use a long pry bar and jump the starter
    4) if all else fails, get the wife.
Lol. Stay safe this winter pal.

Lost the Tractor the same night. Long story short...To many wobbly pops, a bumpy fall off, a short lived chase,

At the age of 12 my grandpa handed me the key to his underpowered 42 8N. He bought it in 52. We had 3 gardens, not farming, but not small either.
I could not plow straight enough for that man!
Fast forward 2020, me and my dad just finished rebuilding that tractors engine. Third rebuild in my life time, I'm 47. I could take $5 of gas and make $50 plowing in an afternoon around our town.
My dad just turned 80, hurts his back to plow now. A job I used to hate I now look forward to in the spring and fall.
And after the rebuild I wanted to try to hand start it. But forgot and we had already put the heavy ass front bumper/hitch on the bastard!

What I find fascinating about tractors is the fact that the original steam tractors were not really used to tug a plough behind them, but rather to pull a human steered plough back and forth between TWO tractors (using exceptionally long ropes/cables). My how things have evolved! They have definitely, even on the small scale (Massey-Ford 2Ns, John Deere’s

It really has and now days it can read the moisture content of the grain or corn you harvesting and now tractors have tracks instead of wheels so you can run in softer dirt and not get stuck plus they make grain carts that read the weight of the grain you have in the grain cart it's really amazing how far they have come. I'm not a Farmer but have learned lot's of watching Larson Farms, Millennial Farmer out of Minnesota and Welker Farms, Fast AG Montana from Montana

LOL you can get stuck with tracks faster than tires in certain conditions... tracks aren't ALWAYS better.
My nephew (by marriage) grandpa runs a 14,000 acre "family farm" and they decided to try tracks, so they gave him a check for $70,000 and sent him with a pickup and gooseneck down to Missouri where the factory is that makes the tracks for Deere combines are made. He bought a set of tracks painted black for $70,000, or for $15,000 more you could buy them painted Deere green (markup because then they're "deere parts" or something) and hauled them back. They farm a lot of muck soils up in northern Indiana, which muck is ancient lakebed from the Ice Age, and it's basically bottomless "pudding" or a peat bog. They figured tracks would allow their big Deere S670's to float right through it. On the more typical sandy ground they worked great-- so much so the next week they sent him back with another $70,000 check to buy a second set for the other combine... but when they got in the MUCK soil, oh brother... it sank... sank about six or seven feet deep... the TOP of the track which is about 5-6 feet high sitting on level ground, was a FOOT DEEP under the muck! Nephew said you could reach up and touch the spout on the unload auger it was sunk so deep into the ground... they spent 2 days with 3 trackhoes and had to borrow a bunch of oilfield wood mats to push down under the tracks to get it out. Ended up having to hire a guy with an older 9600 Deere combine with TRIPLE tires on it to harvest the last of their beans it was SO wet that year-- only thing that could stay on top of the muck!
      Later! OL J R :)

Hop it's not too late but Jez, QD, ya might consider going a little easier on the ether sniffing buddy cause you don't want the boys in while to pick you up. It would be a long walk back home from Regina. Thanks for brightening my day!

I was watching a British show, in the 1940's they had a tractor that started with a 12guage shotgun cartridge - minus the shot, just the BOOM - and that got them cranking. Do a search for Coffman engine starter

Love it! While most young farm people love their new technology these days, my 20 yr old just recently bought a Farmall F12..an F12! So while it won't be pulling any 45ft field cultivators any time soon, it certainly is a hoot for pulling wagons around. Just have to make sure to try and limit the emergency visits to the dentist..;)

@@loganholmberg2295 Logan I really don't care what tractor anyone has. It's a personal preference for each individual. If the owner is happy with what he has, that's all that matters. The "better dead than red" was actually a slogan from back in the early years of the cold war. It was better to be dead than be a communist. Under the circumstances, I just couldn't resist posting that for a laugh.

I've worked a Lamborghini potato farming here on Vancouver Island. It was the first 4x4 tractor on the island. Definitely NO creature comforts like the Supercars that share it's name!!lol

I remember looking at cab tractors with the last new one we bought. ( MF 283).
The brand new tractor was around $18000 CDN. ( mid 80's, 70 hp, 2 wd. ) Bang for buck model.
A nice cab, at that time, was $14000 to $15000, partly because we would have to buy a more expensive tractor in the first place to even get a cab,. Could have gotten an aftermarket cab. ( which were never very good compared to factory ones ) for a little less than $10 000
We did NOT get a cab. I did , however, get a better quality skidoo suit and face warmer mask for winter. Less than $100...
