He really did. Hell, he basically “opened” for MLK. He played at the March on Washington on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial before MLK gave the famous “I have a dream” speech. To be fair, the archival video of it makes it seem like not too many people were that into it but the point is he was there not a spectator but as an official participant. There are a plenty of vids on TH-cam of the performance. The quality of the video is terrible. The quality of the message is beautiful.

Imagine the impact it had on me, and all of my friends, when it was first released nearly 57 years ago. He, along with Joan Baez, Peter Seeger and the folk singers of the day fired up us in Australia, and all around the world. Made us think very differently about social, political and world issues. Watching yourself and other young people discover Dylan (and others) from my era is especially gratifying because, though we have always recognized the greatness of many of these songwriter/performers of that time many of us have wondered whether new generations would let them fade away into the past or make them a part of their own experience as we did. Much of the music from that era has not weathered well at all, but his song and many others from Dylan are proving to be timeless gems and it it a joy to see you unearth them and react as we did when we first heard them all those years ago. There are many other important artists from those days whose work (in my opinion) has held up over time. I wish you the best time ever as you find and share them with your contemporaries.

His instrumentation is usually simple; it's the lyrics that matter. If you like protest songs, A Hard Rain is Going to Fall is fantastic. Patti Smith sang it when she accepted his Nobel Prize for Literature. I'd recommend starting with three albums: The Freewheeling Bob Dylan, Blonde on Blonde and Blood on the Tracks. There are so many great songs, but these would be a good introduction.
Dylan blew into NYC in January of '61 full of folk songs he had picked up along the way. Played the folk venues of Greenwich Village with just his guitar, harmonica and a voice that sounded like a dog with its' leg caught in a barbed wire fence. "The original vagabond. The unwashed phenomenon." Yet by October he had a recording contract with Columbia. His hundreds of songs are poignant and powerful. He was among the first inducted into the "Rock and Roll Hall of Fame" has earned many Grammys been awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, sang on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial when Martin Luther King gave his "I have a dream" speech and won the Nobel Prize for Literature 3 years ago. He is THE songwriter of the 20th century and has influenced and inspired so many other great musicians, poets and other writers who came later, even to this day. As many others have said already, Bob Dylan has won the Nobel Prize for literature. But it is really worth just stopping for a moment to consider how extraordinary that is. A folk singer from the early 1960s, who became a rock singer in the late 1960s, who has literally been touring the world continually for the last 35 years (at the start of which he was already established as one of the greatest artists of all time) never stopping being creative, never stopping writing... and is now regarded as an equal with the greatest writers of literature in the world. Your reaction was very much based on his lyrics and that reaction has been repeated throughout the generations. Just this week, he made the news because he sold his entire songwriting catalogue to universal music for a figure rumoured to be $300 million. He is approaching the age of 80 so probably wants to make sure that he has the ability to look after his loved ones with the success of his art. He is a truly extraordinary artist, literally standing alone without peers. It is incomprehensible that any other pop artist in the near future could receive the Nobel Prize for literature. His instrumentation is usually simple; it's the lyrics that matter. If you like protest songs, A Hard Rain is Going to Fall is fantastic. Patti Smith sang it when she accepted his Nobel Prize for Literature. I'd recommend starting with three albums: The Freewheeling Bob Dylan, Blonde on Blonde and Blood on the Tracks. There are so many great songs, but these would be a good introduction.
Dylan blew into NYC in January of '61 full of folk songs he had picked up along the way. Played the folk venues of Greenwich Village with just his guitar, harmonica and a voice that sounded like a dog with its' leg caught in a barbed wire fence. "The original vagabond. The unwashed phenomenon." Yet by October he had a recording contract with Columbia. His hundreds of songs are poignant and powerful. He was among the first inducted into the "Rock and Roll Hall of Fame" has earned many Grammys been awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, sang on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial when Martin Luther King gave his "I have a dream" speech and won the Nobel Prize for Literature 3 years ago. There is a reason why Bob Dylan became the first musician to ever receive a literature Nobel Prize for his lyrics. He is THE songwriter of the 20th century and has influenced and inspired so many other great musicians, poets and other writers who came later, even to this day. His works will continue to touch, influence and inspire generations to come, as this video demonstrates once more.
Oh man, it is fun to watch a young man see this for the first time. This song hit me straight to the heart and mind. I was hooked. I've been a Dylan fan since the first song.
Dylan is a word smith and his lyrics are deep and still relaxant today timeless
What you gotta realise is when this was originally released in 1964 this kind of music was forbidden in a lot of American households and what Bob is saying to the parents is your kids need to be free to listen to what they want

Dylan's songs are timeless. He is a musical and Lyracist Genius.
As many others have said already, Bob Dylan has won the Nobel Prize for literature. But it is really worth just stopping for a moment to consider how extraordinary that is. A folk singer from the early 1960s, who became a rock singer in the late 1960s, who has literally been touring the world continually for the last 35 years (at the start of which he was already established as one of the greatest artists of all time) never stopping being creative, never stopping writing... and is now regarded as an equal with the greatest writers of literature in the world. Your reaction was very much based on his lyrics and that reaction has been repeated throughout the generations. Just this week, he made the news because he sold his entire songwriting catalogue to universal music for a figure rumoured to be $300 million. He is approaching the age of 80 so probably wants to make sure that he has the ability to look after his loved ones with the success of his art. He is a truly extraordinary artist, literally standing alone without peers. It is incomprehensible that any other pop artist in the near future could receive the Nobel Prize for literature.
