- I rented this Royal Enfield Himalayan www.masquemotostenerife.com/en/ and I can highly recommend them if you are in Tenerife, Canarias. They do a great job.
This is the review of European version of Royal Enfield Himalayan (model 2018, BS4) on road, highway and in off-road. I love old school, classic motorcycles and so I truly can’t wait to ride one. I had the chance now in an amazing landscape of Tenerife in Spain.

An excellent review. I understand why you might consider small changes like foot pegs and sprocket sizes. I suppose any manufacturer has to compromise to a certain extent in trying to make a bike suit many people and different markets. At least the fixes are cheap and simple. I like this bike a lot, a nice simple, basic, do anything, go anywhere machine without all the unnecessary bells and whistles. Simple to maintain and fix. Well done to Royal Enfield for going back to basics.
I just bought a new 2019 Africa Twin. Amazing bike.
For some reason I still watch himalayan videos... that testride with one won't let me go.
If I went outside europe for motorcycle traveling, I'd rather go on this. Any mechanic can fix it.

I usually don't watch long review videos but I watched this one carefully on a friend's advice. OK, it is not very long but I prefer videos under 10 minutes long. However, I really liked your video for a few reasons:
1. The bike was always in action rather than parked somewhere.
2. You spent a good deal of time showing the bike off road.
3. Your off road skills are so good!!
4. You covered a lot of points and your review seemed thorough.
5. Loved the outro!

The word you were looking for was TORQUE. It has a good amount of low end torque. REs arent known for fast bikes they are for torquey cruising

IN Usa these can barely hit 65 mph. And with a semi truck at your back end, it's scary. Just 5 HP more would have been enough.

If my dealership is close to the rest of the U.S.A. Royal Enfield's are selling very well. The first Himalayan won't arrive in Idaho until next week, but the first seven are already spoken for. The dealership has sold all the 2017 REs and have to wait for 2018. The price, looks and simplicity are good selling points.
Excellent review, well rounded. I'm looking to take a bike around the world and am leaning toward this one. The fact that you said you would take it to Vladivostok has sealed it for me.

Nice off road riding skills. I do think there is a market for simple basic well priced bikes that don't need a computer to fix them, bikes you could ride in remote places and fix yourself.
Thanks! It definitely is. I think they were very successful in India and I can't wait to see some figures here in Europe and US. As far as I know, right know it is quite difficult to even buy the bike, as there are big amount of orders. The bargain price probably does the job well.
Is it an option to install a diy flickable switch yourself to cut-out and re-engage the ABS?
Banditmanuk Meanwhile, in India, where this bike is manufactured, many people gave it flak for not being technologically advanced. Come on! It's a motorcycle, not an iPhone! As long as the bike does what you need it to do, it's all good. Of course, the main reason the Himalayan got a lot of hate was the long list of quality issues in the carburettor-equipped version. Chassis breakage, alternator failure, bad clutch, transmission issues, sheared woodruff keys and so on and so forth. I prefer carb on a bike but fueling was far from perfect. With EFI they have brought about refinement and better efficiency.
I think the Indian market is not mature enough to actually look back and appreciate the simplicity of older bikes. The Himalayan captured that spirit with the first model and retains it yet.
@@twistednemo You kind of got it right. Of course the first gen Himalayan had a slew of problems and the first time buyers had to take the brunt of the issue. Then there is the question of expectations. It is the cheapest motorcycle out west but in India it is more expensive than 80% of two wheeler brands on the road. Plus all REs always were a love it or hate it proposition.
@@vishnumohannair8791 All bikes and cars in India have become expensive lately. The buyers of small commuter bikes and enthusiast bikes are different. Only issues were quality and lack of power. RE seems to have addressed the quality aspect for the most part.

Good review, and you seemed to really bring out the bike’s strong points. If I had the money I’d buy one, plenty of torque and enough power for normal riding, plus some off-road capability. It would “suit me down to the ground”! Thanks, Les

Well i think u gave a very logical review there, royal Enfield isn't about the most technical and feature packed motorcycle, because at the end of the day a triumph tiger and a Himalayan both are just bikes arsing electronics will not make your bike a jet and people talk about the vibrations well its a machine if u want something without vibes buy an electric scooter for god sake , RE is about the feel its avout enjoying the rides, people ride like a cheetah going fast covering more and more distance they completely forget about the view the nature the eye catching wildlife,, plus bonus is you cannot fix a broken multistarda in the middle od bowhere by yourself, but you can fix any royal Enfield because it is basic and very enjoyable,
I would sign this! Definitely. It has been my nightmare going with Multistrada let's say through the Gobi desert when the bike failures. Also the speed and vibrations, definitely true. I mean, Ive also ridden RE Continental GT 535, which vibrates more and it was really really FUN. I don't understand why people compain at this. You can buy like Yamaha MT-03 or Honda CB500 when you want bike which does not vibrate. I wish I own the RE one day :)

I don't usually comment on videos but I am commenting on this one.
Though the video was long but it was thoroughly detailed.
Not only you provided your own experience but also compared it with other motorcycles in the same segment.
I'm from India and we have this motorcycle over here and it has been developed a lot in the past 2 years.
Sad thing is that, Royal Enfield isn't selling the ABS model over here. They're just exporting it all to Europe. (I guess because it's mandatory in European countries to have ABS)
I would like to advise you some things.
Try a different camera angle. Point it towards your face. Take some shots from underneath the motorcycle.
I'm a struggling motovlogger too and trying to create good content and you have the abilities to create good content. I could totally feel your excitement, when you were off roading and going "Oh yeah, this is good" 😂
You enjoyed the ride and did not keep complaining about things which the manufacturer could've included (Which happens in most of the Himalayan reviews)
Royal Enfield is kind of struggling to get new tech into their motorcycles and I believe they can come up with an alternative to the GS in near future.
P.S Just booked the Himalayan Slit Edition for a friend of mine.

The front brake on this bike has hardly any bite that it needs ABS. The rear wheel one can lock at will and is actually favourable in some situations. Unfortunately, this version in the video does not have an ABS switch and the reviewer had to pull out the fuse to disable it when he went off road. As for new tech, what tech do you really need on a motorcycle? It is a motorcycle, not an iPhone.

A total reliable motorcycle for long distance adventure!
As I am relatively new to motorcycling 4 years now. I have to say apart from abs I really dont see the need for any extra tech in a motorcycle as I think they are all gimmicks. Simple reliable and being able to service my own motorcycle once out of warranty is the most enjoyable thing. If I wanted anything complicated I would buy a car.
cool videos you have, I wanted to ask you about the RE Himalayan version in Bolivia, Southamerica. I need to know which version do we have here, if it is the BS3 or BS4 version, I went to see the bike and it has got Pirelli MT60 as a rear tyre, it is carburated and has NO ABS, but they told me it is a 2019 model so it is not the same as the one you have in Europe, the chassis number confirms it is a 2019, but I DO NOT know if it's BS3 or BS4. Would you reccomend going down a tooth on the front sprocket or up a tooth for commute use with the occasional off roading? I live in us and the roads near me avg 55-70mph speed limit, even the back roads. What would you reccomend? (Fuel injected model)
As you say, this is not a racing motorcycle. This is about getting you where you want to go, while enjoying the places you go through to get there. It's a very purpose built bike. Adequate in every way. There are plenty of bikes out to satisfy the need for speed, or stopping you so fast it feels like you might actually have found reverse gear. This is about simple pleasures, sweet enjoyment, life at a livable pace. Practicality, and price.

Nice review. I have a BS3 carb one in Nepal. The Nepali roads are worse than the Indian and I appreciate the torque altho the weight is about 50kgs too heavy for the worst of roads found here. But this is about the only option if you wanted to carry pillion confidently and tour long distance. Reliability has been great except you need aggressive and preventive maintenance particularly fighting the rust is a constant battle. But i enjoy getting my hands dirty and learn, and this bike is perfect for that. I want a bike in New Zealand as well and Himalayan is still a good option there. Top speed is just a little slow and no ABS for NZ’s rainy climate are concerns. Honda’s CRF250 Rally would be the better option, but at this price range, if you wanted to carry pillion and good torque to climb hills this is about the only higher CC’ed option in this price range except KLR650
I am wondering if just improved brake pads would improve the front brake performance. In other words could the issue just require a simple and inexpensive fix?

This is funny coincidence as I have the exact same weight and height as you. So I think it is a little too small. If I would buy it I would definitely try to look for some higher seat or even making the bike little higher. I don't know if this is possible. Also I would try to higher handlebars to be able stand in a foot-pegs.
I could ride it but there are bigger bikes (possibly second hand in this price though). In terms of our weight, this was not a problem for the suspension, but of course the ride will not be anything super fast and wild because of just 25 horsepower :)

You could change the Battery & Exhaust to save a lot of weight , also i heard a Powertronic plug & play tune up will make it run better with around 15 - 20% increase in top end speed.
I think the wheels weigh a ton as they are solid metal lol

how did ABS performed ?
Hi Ankit. It worked fine, but the front break is not that strong so it was very rare when I saw front ABS in function. In off-road the front one started always little bit late, but I anyway turned it off by removing the fuse. The reaction of the rear brake with ABS was quite standard like on any other modern bike :) Thanks for comment :)

Himalayan comes into its fore in Trails. Simply go with few friends on different bikes on some tough trail & see how many times other bikes fall, while Himalayan just keeps going on with high torque
How would you compare it to Honda crf250rally ?
Do the pirelli tyres come as standard on the EU version of the bike? Which pirellis do you have on your bike?
I live in India and have the BS4 Himalayan. The bike came with ceat tyres.
Hi Rohan. Pirelli P60 is the type and they are standard in Europe. I am happy for you, I wish I can ride the bike one day in India :))
JF Motorcycles although you are most welcomed, I must mention the himalyan in India sells for 3/5 of the price in us and europe for a reason. There are serious cost cutting besides local manufacturing, ex no abs, cheaper tyres and what not.
Himalaya is very light adventure bike with perfect balance n suspension n power that girls can ride off-road anywhere
They should build a 650 Himalayan.

Nice review, but I think this bike stopped making sense as soon as the Kawa Versys-x 300 appeared on the market: a much more refined, much more reliable, twin-cylinder bike, with 40HP, which makes a world of diference when you´re out there on the road. It may be slightly less "offroad" than the Himalayan, but perfectly capable of doing what you showed us here. Way easier to find parts and authorized dealers, as well.
IMO, and all things considered, a much better bike to make a RTW trip than the RE, if you´re so inclined.

Just depends on the person. The Himalayan is about a grand cheaper it looks like, has a little lower seat height, and more torque. It does weight more than the Versys.
And some people may like the looks over the Versys or vice versa. Both look to be solid bikes if you understand what you are getting.

Hi there.. Hmm to be competely honest with you it has been some time I tested and I do not remember this feeling really accurately. I would rather not try describe it and recommend you to take it at the dealership for a test ride. I think it was not that horrible, like oldschool small single cylinder, but rather go and try :)

Yes, I agree. On the other hand Yamaha SR 400 was a similar case with around 27 horsepower I think? Also the Mash/Shineray 400, which is now sold in many countries under different brands with same 27-28 horsepower. It seems that for some sort of people it is enough
its not the HP but torque, which is needed in tough off road trails, thats were it will out perform honda. It is designed by choice to very very capable trail bike, its not deigned for street racing on paved roads where high BP is required.
But it produces good amount of torque 32nm what was the torque amount xr400used to produce it's a long stroke engine

From day one of riding the exhaust pipe start discoloration....Rear break cylinder guard is missing....RE doesn't know even what it meant by quality. In India the sales figures of Himalayan is the worst within RE portfolio because of the quality issues only.

currently in my budget range it is the only Adventure tourer that looks promising. I read and watched many reviews, watched owner reviews but there were not any major issues. I think i will still go for it...

Just FYI this motorcycle is known to be very unreliable.
I heard a lot about Indian version and saw many videos, but I think many changes were made on the EU version BS4. This one should be way better and the experience of first owners proves it so far.
Going by Royal Enfield's track record of making improvements here in India I would say it will have problems eventually. I have neighbors here who spend unreasonable amounts on upkeep of new models but at least here spares are readily available. It is okay for trips within the country where service is within reach and is okay in the city. An around the world trip is a big no-no (also why you don't see many of them go trans-continental). The reason it sells well in India is the British history/cult following and classic looks. The motorbike itself as many even here acknowledge, is of poor quality. Stay away unless you are assured of good service with good availability of spares as you will be needing them a lot.

Royal Enfield makes better quality motorcycles for the European countries than the shit bikes they manufacture in India.
I am sorry for that, but I can't really say before I try riding RE in India. Hopefully it will come true soon.
first thing first this bike is shit the quality of component is shit, the brand is shit and but the ride quality is good. I am Himalayan BS3 owner and some how I managed to save my life because of CDI unit failure twice that to on the highway. On 31st Jan I completed 1 year ownership and I serviced my bike 12 time in the year. despite complainting and concern about my life RE choosed not to bother.
In India as a RE owner I feel like a Lab Rat.
