    Hi everyone! I thought it should be said that the rules have actually now changed for these horrible tests. The three attempts rule has now been lifted and applicants now have unlimited goes.

    If anyone watching has their skills test coming up seriously don't worry about it. I worry about absolutely everything but it seriously wasn't as bad as I thought it would be... Top advice would be to just watch short TH-cam videos of mental maths tips and things like that! When your in the test centre the tricks that you have learnt will come to you and make it so much easier! I'm not amazing at maths or English in the slightest but found them alright. Hope this helps x

    Anyone who is watching this, don’t let this put you off. I am a trainee English and Drama teacher, whilst my English is fantastic my Maths is pitiful. I passed on my third attempt, I revised for months and months and was 4 and 5 marks away from passing. I cried when I failed the 2nd time. I considered tutoring, I watched online videos, I did everything I could. I honestly believe I passed by luck on my third attempt but regardless don’t let this deter you from wanting to teach, just keep revising and practice everyday and get a tutor and you CAN pass x

  • @thewritergrl

    Hey, I failed mine 3 times as well. I took a few years off (not by choice, they freeze you out for 2 years) and I'm about to retake mine again. I decided on another route onceI'd failed because I just believed teaching wasn't for me. But after some time away from maths (a much needed break) I decided that I did indeed want to teach and all I needed was to continue studying. I wonder if you used Numeracy Ready when you first did your test? I didn't but I'm using it now and it's so helpful!. My maths is pitiful, always has been but back in the day trainee teachers could take their skills tests as many times as they want until they passed, WHILST they were training. It's a lot harder for us budding teachers. I'm glad you've found what you want to do, but I will say, if you're still doing your degree, you could always do a PGCE in the future. All the best!

    Hi, I was exactly the same position as you 10 years ago. I had panic attacks over the maths skills test. It wasn’t that I didn’t know, it was the format of the test. I went to the doctor and he wrote to the skills test place and I was able to have extra time on the test. I passed. I’m a primary school teacher now. I really feel for you. I’m really glad that you are happy now. If you do want to go for it again you could apply for extra time on the grounds of panic and worry. Just a little extra time can make a huge difference.

    I'm studying primary school teaching at Worcester university. The whole process of getting into uni was an absolute nightmare! Sixth forms and colleges really need to help students more to prepare us for interviews and skills tests! I certainly agree with you though as I'm about to start my final year and I'm unsure now as to whether I would like to be a teacher anymore. Low pay, stress, and no time for yourself. Definitely a stressful career! Thanks for uploading this video though! I also felt alone when doing the skills tests and found that no one understood the pain we all had to go through. so there has been some changes to the skills Test which actually gives me hope :)
    ->. taken from sta.education.gov.uk
    In February 2018, changes to the arrangements for the skills tests were announced.
    • Candidates will have unlimited attempts to achieve a test pass.
    • The 2-year lockout period will be removed; candidates previously locked out will be able to book tests for both subjects.
    • All candidates will be able to book 3 tests per subject, free of charge. A charge will be applied from the fourth test attempt per subject.
    If you have paid for and taken a second or third attempt at a test on or after 24 October 2017 and before 14 February 2018, you will automatically receive a refund for the cost of your test.

I'm sorry the skills tests didn't work out for you, but happy you have found a path you're happy with. You can now have 3 free attempts and then pay for additional attempts. The tests are hard but there are practice tests online so you can get used to the format. Any test is scary but give it a go, if you pass, fantastic. If you don't there are loads of other options out there. ❤️❤️

    Teaching is about learning from those with relevant life skills and been through life suffered failure & used that experience to grow...
    Plus being completely competent in The subject's they are teaching.
    This video sums up why 90% of schools are currently falling apart...my children bring home Maths & English assignments outside of their learning brackets. Soon as I question the teachers they hide behind the answer of well that's the curriculum.
    Easy way to sum up the entire education system in the United Kingdom post 1961...

    I’ve just been through the same thing. I am 37, was on a Scitt course back in 2004 but didn’t complete so never took the tests. I’ve worked in education since 2002. For the last four years I’ve worked as an unqualified class teacher in a special school and have a fantastic track record. I was planning to do the assessment only route to QTS due to my experience and skills. It would have taken 12 weeks to qualify. However yesterday I failed the maths in my third attempt. I am absolutely heartbroken and will lose my current teaching role in two months to make way for a qualified teacher who will do everything I am already doing. The reality is I still desperately want it but at my age I can’t put myself through those tests again at 40 years old!! I want a family by then. The tests are not fit for purpose.

    I went onto studying to be a primary school teacher straight out of secondary school. I completed 2 or the 3 years of training and didnt get the 3rd year done due to mental health issues i couldnt access help for during the second year. It in fact was 6 more years and severe worsening of my mental health before i could access help. I havent been able to return to teacher training or work in any job fulltime. Im not sure if early intervention could have enabled me to stay at uni. Or if the same end result of not being able to work in the open employment workforce would have happened anyway even if id qualified.

Unpaid the whole time of training. And kids who don't appreciate your planning is the worst! It's a behavior management job in many classrooms. Stay strong and never give up on yourself! I didn't think I was going to pass the numeracy test. It was so frustrating, because it wasn't even that I didn't know how to do the questions, it's just that the timer made me so anxious I kept messing up. I had my third attempt and honestly thought it was the worst one I'd ever done, but shockingly I'd somehow passed it. Apparently they've scrapped them all together now (the year after I applied, typical!) But if you're ever in a situation like that, just try to remember that it isn't the end of the world. Also study quick ways to do sums, there are lots of books that give you methods to beat the clock if that's what you struggle with.

    It's so great to hear of your happiness changing career paths. It's great that you are seeing it as 'everything happens for a reason' and I do agree with this, but I also feel that the skills test has been a big reason for me to loose my faith in teaching too. I began uni before you needed to get the skills test first, so I had the whole 3 years of my primary education degree to take them. Just like you, I passed the English first time but knew the maths wasn't going to come easy at all. After dedicating the same time and effort you did, I also failed on my final attempt, just 1 mark off and knew if I did it again I would have passed it as I was finally managing to deal with the panic, fear and anxiety of the timed test with the repeated experience from the attempts! Luckily because I already completed my degree, I am now classed as an 'unqualified teacher' and can teach but schools can be funny about it and my pay takes a nasty cut. I am now finding myself falling out of love with teaching. The whole skills test makes me very bitter, I wish to teach in the Early Years and despite what many 'academics' might say about how we 'should be able to do a 'simple' maths test', in no way will I ever need the maths in that test to teach EYFS or KS1. I have successfully taught a year 1 class for two years and these children have developed and progressed beautifully. I think its such a shame that brilliant teachers are being put off or quite frankly put down from this pathetic test. I am falling out of love with teaching for reasons on top of this, as you mentioned, work load and lack of appreciation for the hours and efforts you put in, but how demoralised I felt from this pathetic test really was the icing on the cake! I am looking into teaching abroad to see what it's like elsewhere but it's likely I won't be in the profession for much longer. And I worked incredibly hard at university to gain a first, something I never imagined I would do. It is such a shame we have been made to feel like this. I can see you would have been a fantastic teacher but am so glad you have found a new path where your talents and gorgeous personality will be absorbed and appreciated. I wish you all the best!

    Over half of the teachers I speak to who I'm close with, say they regret becoming a teacher. You aren't aloud to discipline them, also when they go home to their scummy parents they don't get any form of discipline, it's impossible to teach trash like that. Don't get I to teaching whatever you do.

    Hi Emily! my name is Jemima and i just wanted to say thank you so much for sharing your story. This exact situation has happened to me in Australia & im now currently trying to navigate what to do. Its nice to hear your experiences and how something positive has come from this. All the best with everything !

  • @Lewis-vg5uu
    @Lewis-vg5uu 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Sorry to hear about this experience. But who knows what is good or bad. I went through the same stress with QTS, passed them. Then spent 3 years studying, hating teaching, and one year hating my life teaching as an NQT. Now onto better and brighter pastures. Probably would have been better off failing haha!

    I would just say practice makes perfect i thought i would fail my maths but i revised with the practice skills test and became better and more confident in my ability and i passed! Honestly if i can do it we can all do it. Im sure they have options for extra time etc if you have special circumstances aswell. Good luck in the future for anyone trying the skills test, make sure you revise and practice😁 x

    I no longer know how to feel about my career now. I'm set to go to Winchester University to study English Literature and Education Studies however feel a little put off now. Would you still recommend Winchester as a university? Was your loss of passion influenced by the degree or university at all?x

    • @EmilySteeleX
      @EmilySteeleX  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hello Ella, I lost the passion for teaching not the unviersity. Winchester is great! Why do you feel a little put off? I have met some great people at Winchester and like how it is campus based and small :) xx

      Hi Ella, I did Education Studies at Winch and I loved it. The professors are lovely and work hard with getting you the best grades. The programme leaders are fantastic too and extremely helpful. I agree with Emily, the lectures are small and intimate so you get the help you need. You will not find this in any other university in England. Good Luck n_n

    I am in Australia, I was about to finish my teaching degree when this test became compulsory for new graduates. There was definitely a literacy and numeracy test before course and I passed that one. But this Lantite test is bullshit.I failed 3 times an now I requested for my forth attempt. Its depends on acer whether they give me permission or not???
    I am so disappointed.

    Thank you so much for sharing your experience, your honesty is commendable. I’m in my third year of being a Secondary English trainee and those skills tests were the bane of my list!
    Anyone who is nervous about them, I would say do as many mocks as you can! I did all of the online tests I could find - it helps you get used to the process, structure and language of the tests. Practise, practise, practise!

Wonder what you’d teach the kids 😳😳😳

    If anyone watching has their skills test coming up seriously don't worry about it. I worry about absolutely everything but it seriously wasn't as bad as I thought it would be... Top advice would be to just watch short TH-cam videos of mental maths tips and things like that! When your in the test centre the tricks that you have learnt will come to you and make it so much easier! I'm not amazing at maths or English in the slightest but found them alright. Hope this helps x
