9:46 "To send light into the darkness of men’s hearts, such is the duty of the artist." - Robert Schumann ... This is my philosophy of music education in one sentence. Love it.
Everything Robert Gupta said in this TED Talk is enlightening. Deja Vu for me. I just returned from a three and a half week musical bicyle tour a week before watching this video. Before watching this I came to this same conclusion. while playing for the homeless and on the street. La viva de Musica. Thank you Robert Gupta for a inspiring talk.
Great talk. Some of us with neurological conditions have known this for years! I have cerebral palsy, and smooth, coordinated movement is difficult (and sometimes impossible) for me... but I've always been able to tap my toes in time to music. It's no miracle cure (I can only do it with my right foot), but it's pretty darn neat to feel your body "unlock" thanks to music.
@@TheOriginalEntz he didn't want for the audience to know the name of the song. What was important that they heard the emotions conveyed through what he played. They would have gained nothing by learning the name.
Can't please Everyone, this is what i like about TED they give us variety so that anyone can find something to love and have interest in, rather than putting negativity around. lovely talk i may say, took a little stress off studying.
Music is true happiness and sheer joy to our beating heart and heals all our worries, fears and pain from our life forgetting ourselves indulge in the music and live life with more of colours and sparkle in our eyes to "Shine Shine Shine" all our life and to the fullest
Music is great, I don't know if you heard about the kids that have awaken from coma through music. I heard it several times already, so there is surely something to this story. Just in June a girl awoke from coma after her mother sang her Adele songs for a week! Unbelievable what music can do!
This reminds me of one of Oliver Sacks' cases in his book 'The Mind's Eye' - that music can help improve the condition of aphasic patients. I have yet to read his other book 'Musicophilia'... can't find it in the school library :(
but I do appreciate him reminding me about the Nathaniel Ayers story, I'm now off to go watch the movie which I've always meant to but didn't get around to it.. tata
I'm not trying to tell anyone not to share their opinion. But I think that in most situations it is far more helpful for a person to ask a question like "does anyone know what his overall point was?" rather than just saying the talk was boring. Then you can get several points of view and maybe you will learn something from someone who thought about the talk differently. I guess what I should have said is elaborate because the original comment wasn't providing anything useful to the conversation.
You can either choose to take something from these talks or you can choose to be cynical. I found it interesting and so did the majority of people who watched. Keep your negativity to yourself.
"Keep your negativity to yourself" Why? anyone can comment. Why should they refrain from commenting just because you judge their comment to be negative?
Education is quite important in certain cultures, it might be a stereotype but there is some truth to it I think. On the other hand, it might just have been that these last few talks were recorded in India or something. TED does talks in other countries after all, so maybe that's it.
I have an enormous passion for classical guitar and I used to want to have a bachelor agree in it, but I thought I wanted to go study medicine next year anyway. But now I'm really confused again. I hate my life xd
It's more than that. Did you not listen to the part where Gupta talks about singing being helpful in teaching people with left brain damage to speak again. The music doesn't just uplift it can help treat certain conditions.
As an actual musician (played piano professionally for 20 years) I'm not sure I have much to take away from this. I do appreciate his artistic nature however, his skill in violin is no more than 3 years in training. 3 years cannot in any way understand a lifetime of music.
because he may be unfit does not diminish the fantastic things he has to say about mental health. physical and mental health are two completely different things and it is a shame you can't look past his appearance and listen to what he is saying.
Alright, alright. I see you have a lot of other youtuber's to deal with so I'll leave you to them. I still believe you saying someone is not entitled to be a spokesperson about health because they are fat is a far cry from reason. ...and you are right in defending yourself. I didn't realize a spokesperson is elected to speak for others... not his/herself. I apologize for making such an accusation without reasonable cause. I think he's more of a public speaker, rather than spokesperson. My bad.
My point of view is, just because a person is not of optimum health or skill, doesn't mean they cannot try to help others in the area said person is struggling. Sometimes it takes a fat person to get through to fat people. ...and I never said speaking one's mind is wrong, you did.
is it just me or is this guy a little bit high on himself... maybe I have it wrong having only watched this for 10 minutes but that's about all of this guy I could take. I also was wondering about his "facial" expressions while he was playing his music but after watching how contrived and practiced his mannerisms and way of talking is, I'm pretty sure they are as well. BTW I too am a violinist but I've never once found myself in facial spasms, he's seen way too many Itzhak Perlman videos
Who wants to straggle along to be 110 years old? By then people are just burdens to everybody around them, and most everyone just wishes for the person to die.
wot m8 Ad hominem is the use of an irrelevant negative characteristic of the arguer so as to somehow prove an argument wrong. Gupta is talking about the mental health of patients, not about their obesity; the fact that he's a sphere has nothing to do with what he's saying here.
There are many more biological reasons people cant lose weight then there are for being asthmatic. If you can accept someone doesn't chose to be asthmatic then why is it so hard to believe that someone didn't chose to be the weight they are.

"Hearing this music was like hearing the sun shine." It is an absolute honor to call this man my friend. 🙏
Does anyone else notice how great the acoustics are in that room with his violin?

MUSIC IS LIFE, LIFE IS RHYTHM, THE HEART IS RHYTHM, WE ARE MUSIC WE ARE ONE. ALOHA KE AKUA.

1) Sarabande from 2nd Violin Partita, BWV 1004, J. S. Bach
2) Gavotte en Rondeau from 3rd Violin Partita, BWV 1006, J. S. Bach
Just like some one reciting poetry the performer should introduce these pieces before playing. Highly unprofessional for a TED stage.
@@TheOriginalEntz he didn't want for the audience to know the name of the song. What was important that they heard the emotions conveyed through what he played. They would have gained nothing by learning the name.
A BIG “Thank you!” All the World needed to hear this 💯♥️
What a beautiful piece!
What a Talk! Fantastic!
During my depressing moments in life I felt comfort while listening to Austin classical radio station. It makes perfect sense. S
Brilliant man. Brilliant presentation.
Can't please Everyone, this is what i like about TED they give us variety so that anyone can find something to love and have interest in, rather than putting negativity around. lovely talk i may say, took a little stress off studying.

A natural speaker.
Amazing ❤
thank you for this tremendous TED, Thank you Robert Gupta!
I'm starting to cry!
I just want to say that this was really, really good.
Music is true happiness and sheer joy to our beating heart and heals all our worries, fears and pain from our life forgetting ourselves indulge in the music and live life with more of colours and sparkle in our eyes to "Shine Shine Shine" all our life and to the fullest
My music teacher made me watch this...

like always. inspiring
Fantastically insightful
Music is the art of sound. One can use whatever "instrument" that creates sound in an artistic way to produce music. A voice IS an instrument.
Amen to u brother u do dream works and work dreams
Thanks!
Tears, my friends. Tears.
It was Gavotte en rondeau from Partita nr.3 BWV 1006
Sad but true.
thanks!!
Lovely performance. Much more honest than the average "big name" fiddler!
This reminds me of one of Oliver Sacks' cases in his book 'The Mind's Eye' - that music can help improve the condition of aphasic patients. I have yet to read his other book 'Musicophilia'... can't find it in the school library :(
Thanks for sharing your beautiful music and story!
but I do appreciate him reminding me about the Nathaniel Ayers story, I'm now off to go watch the movie which I've always meant to but didn't get around to it.. tata
superbe!

holy crap he's good. Also great talk

I very much agree!
beautiful music,,,, ahhh i wanna get a private violinist to play for me
I suppose, but at the moment, no time. Been trying to learn guitar and it's going slowly because I have other priorities and deadlines.
"Keep your negativity to yourself"
Why?
anyone can comment. Why should they refrain from commenting just because you judge their comment to be negative?
What's the second song that he played on the violin? It sounds familiar but can't place where I've heard it...
It is never too late to learn :)
06:51
I agree that this is an amazing presentation but everyone is entitled to their opinion.
Is anyone familiar with the piece Gupta plays in the beginning of the video?
okay I just HAVE TO know how that piece is called for the violin he plays at the beginning of this video!!
What piece is? 13:05
¿Qué pieza es?
does anyone know where i can find the video he was speaking of in the beginning of the video?
how can you leave a negative comment and then tell me to 'Keep your negativity to yourself'?
BTW there is nothing negative about my previous comment.
what was the title of the music that he was playing at the end?
That is something that i should have been told as a younger person. School can wait. your passion will not.
First time ever seeing this ! Bravo, Maestro !!
Question, if I may? Any relation to Dr. Sanjai Gupta??
Sorry if the name is spelled wrong.
+Thomas Gallagher lol are you related to Noel Gallagher?
+sn299 gupta is a very common lastname
sn299 Unfortunately, NO. Unless it's somebody's grandchild or great grandchild.

Interesting...
i don't understand, pls explain what U.N. AGENDA21 is
I have an enormous passion for classical guitar and I used to want to have a bachelor agree in it, but I thought I wanted to go study medicine next year anyway. But now I'm really confused again. I hate my life xd
I have the exact same problem
Beauty is truth and truth, beauty. That is all ye need to know.
Close: ""Beauty is truth, truth beauty,-that is all ye know on earth, and all ye need to know." Ode on a Grecian Urn.
I swear TED uploaded this video before a few years ago.
It's more than that. Did you not listen to the part where Gupta talks about singing being helpful in teaching people with left brain damage to speak again. The music doesn't just uplift it can help treat certain conditions.
Can anyone tell me the names of the pieces he played?
What a champ
13:08 The chin rest is like, Holy shit I can't breathe!!
If you are a real musician, you couldn't dislike this video
How do you know they didn't?
With music this good who needs money?
As an actual musician (played piano professionally for 20 years) I'm not sure I have much to take away from this. I do appreciate his artistic nature however, his skill in violin is no more than 3 years in training. 3 years cannot in any way understand a lifetime of music.
What is the closing piece he plays?
I believe it's one of bach suites for unaccompanied CELLO
it is the Prelude to the Partita for Violin No. 3 in E major
Ikn
There's a lot of Christians in India and many get Christian names but a family surname.

To be fair, the comment is more derogatory than constructive..

then stop watching TED
So music is great. And medicine is great. And music has the power to uplift. Umm, where was the interesting idea/s part?
me
is it just me or is this guy a little bit high on himself... maybe I have it wrong having only watched this for 10 minutes but that's about all of this guy I could take. only if used as such. "singing about not using drugs" does not qualify
well.. easy.. its just like rajender Paul..
Who wants to straggle along to be 110 years old? By then people are just burdens to everybody around them, and most everyone just wishes for the person to die.
Correlation != causation
I wish I learned to play violin rather than piano.
Melodic Intonation Therapy, not theory.

BACH.
Nice ad hominem, bro.
Arh maybe you was nervous first play... I will let you off. You played the second time much better par a few points.

Silly and trolling...Check it out. Look in a mirror.
musicians don't "sing". they play instruments
