- Who invented the chopped cheese sandwich? In this episode of UA Eats, we eat the legendary NYC street food, the NYC chopped cheese sandwich. Among the best restaurants in NYC and the best eats in NYC, the NYC street foods are often my favorite. Among them, the chopped cheese tops the list of my favorite NYC foods. The chopped cheese is one of the best NYC bodega foods and street foods you can find in the city, typically in Harlem, the Bronx, and Brooklyn. Every place has its own chopped cheese recipe, but the Blue Sky Deli chopped cheese, formerly known as the Hajji's chopped cheese, is the original chopped cheese and the best chopped cheese in NYC. Give it a try sometime!

Amazing looking sandwiches. I think what a lot of people don't realize is that the wrapping of the sandwich, and resting for a few minutes also really makes a difference. When you get a cheesesteak and it's wrapped for a few minutes, the bread steams, and the meat and cheese become almost part of the bread... This is why sometimes when you take a sandwich to go it's better than if you make it at home. I've actually wrapped some sandwiches at home and let them sit for a few minutes. 😆

There’s a TH-cam video talking about how sandwiches taste different at the store versus homemade and the wrap was one reason why. It makes sense of the flavors coming together like that. That being said, I’m still too lazy to wrap sandwiches at home 🤦🏻♂️

I knew as soon as I heard you bite into that second sandwich, I t was that crunch that made the difference. Being from California it's interesting to see what real New Yorkers eat. Cool to go back to your old crib and know that sandwich is still killer.

hey UA Eats, Philly cheesesteak & chopped cheese are 2 totally different sandwiches; not even worth comparing . But Hajjis does stand head/Shoulders above all else as the best choppy-chop in NYC

I grew up in Manhattan, and I didn't hear about this sandwich till way after I moved out. I really think this started out as a Harlam thing and branched out over the years.

I’m sold on trying this as a native New Yorker I’ve never had it. The dash of vinegar that Ivan put on at the end is what sells me.
ive had a lot of different chopped cheeses throughout the northeast, different states different styles.. it might be my favorite sammich. i was back in NYC a couple weeks back and decided to finally make the trek out to Harlem to try the OG from Hajji's. im not sure if it was just the day that i went, but it didnt live up to the hype at all. for the cost it was good for sure, but it just didnt do it for me

You can’t go anywhere to get them because some spots don’t make them right. It has to be a bodega where you see a lot of people getting sandwiches, that’s when you know its good.

Not to burst anyone's bubble but line cooks in the Midwest have been making these since the early 90s as their meals.
I'm from around here and I have no idea who decided this was something worth crying to the heavens over. It's the most generic sandwich I've ever eaten; not bad by any means but people who try to talk it up like chopped cheese is a top level sandwich are just exposing themselves as broke fuckers who don't eat good food.

that is crazy, Bahamas Deli was my favorite chopped cheese spot as well when I live up on Claremont st. Would get one and go sit in Sakura Park. Honestly, I still bike up there to get that sandwich every now and then. Got Hajji's awhile back as well but didn't think it was as good. Keep up the great videos!

You should go to my friends food truck. It’s called bodega truck. Best chopped cheeses in nyc. Look them up you won’t be disappointed. They have regular and specialty chopped cheeses.

Being a guy that grew up in the Philly area to me it taste more authentic with a kaiser roll splash of vinegar every time
Think the acidity balances out the greasiness of thr meat and cheese
I like the vinegar but it's totally optional. I think it helps cut through the grease though

In all MY travels, turns out the only town that TRULY didn’t sleep was New O! 👀 We had a pie delivered to our hotel room at 4AM. And walked up Canal after that to get fresh blueberry beignets.
In NYC, I found it a lot harder to find 24-hr ‘jernts.’ 🤷♂️ ALL major cities need to step up their all-night game! 🤦♂️

Damn it, I'm missen out! I live in SF and there's nothing comparable to the food found in NY. All I can get in SF is a lousy sandwich and the cost is 13-15. I wish I cud get NY eats out here.

Never had a chopped cheese. Born and raised in Brooklyn but left New York before the sandwich was invented.
I'm sure it's tasty because after all it's greasy hamburger and cheese but I can't bring myself to give the sandwich respect. A Philly cheesesteak is made from ribeye or some other steak and a chopped cheese is made from Frozen hamburger patties from the Food Service. Nah, no respect.

Chopped cheese is only native to Uptown Manhattan....no native from Brooklyn, Queens, or Staten Island orders a chopped cheese. It's not an NYC thing, and has only been made/deemed as such since transplants that saw it online ask for it in other areas now.
