    Sheet music downloadable here: editionpeters.epartnershub.com...
    Text:
    Nunc dimittis servum tuum, Domine, secundum verbum tuum in pace:
    Quia viderunt oculi mei salutare tuum
    Quod parasti ante faciem omnium populorum:
    Lumen ad revelationem gentium, et gloriam plebis tuae Israel.
    Gloria Patri, et Filio, et Spiritui Sancto:
    Sicut erat in principio, et nunc, et semper, et in sæcula sæculorum. Amen.
    Translation (The Book of Common Prayer, 1662):
    Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace: according to thy word.
    For mine eyes have seen: thy salvation,
    Which thou hast prepared: before the face of all people;
    To be a light to lighten the Gentiles: and to be the glory of thy people Israel.
    Glory be to the Father, and to the Son: and to the Holy Ghost;
    As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be: world without end. Amen.

    Vocals like this have such power on a really basic human level. Honestly, all the angst and chaos in our modern world seems to just disappear when I listen to this; it really pulls on something deep inside of me, both body and mind. Hypnotic. When these eight people sing, I can hear the whole of humanity sing with them.

    This passage from Scripture often moves me to tears. Simeon, the elderly priest of the Old Covenant holds in his arms the baby Jesus. He was one of the few who recognized the Messiah at birth, and now he may die in peace not only personally satisfied to have seen the Chosen One, but to have held the incoming New Covenant embodied in the One who came to fulfill the Law and the Prophets. - Luke 2:25-35

    • @TheRichrocker
      @TheRichrocker 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@gl8282 I don't mind at all. It is the "Canticle of Simeon" from the second chapter of the Gospel of Luke. According to Gospel Simeon was a devout Jew who had been been promised by the Holy Spirit that he would not die until he had seen the Messiah. When Mary and Joseph brought the baby Jesus to the Temple in Jerusalem for the ceremony of consecration of the firstborn son, Simeon was there, and he took Jesus into his arms and uttered these words.
      Their translation according to the Roman Breviary:
      "Now, Master, you let your servant go in peace. You have fulfilled your promise.
      My own eyes have seen your salvation,
      which you have prepared in the sight of all peoples.
      A light to bring the Gentiles from darkness; the glory of your people Israel."
      The Nunc Dimittis is the traditional 'Gospel Canticle' of the catholic and anglican Night Prayer (Compline).

    Saw this group in concert last year. You don't think they can be this perfect "live" but they are. It's insane how perfect they are as an ensemble. I'm a trained musician and did not hear one misstep the entire night. No music either. Everything memorized.

    • @hornkraft9438
      @hornkraft9438 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, but why would anyone want them to have memorized their music? That's not necessary for professionals. Cathedral choirs who go through a lot of literature in a short time never memorize while amateur school choirs in the U.S. often do. Perhaps it makes a better video performance?

    • @wordpressobsessed9067
      @wordpressobsessed9067 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@hornkraft9438 It's not necessary for professionals, but professionals memorize their music. When is the last time you saw a concert pianist playing a concerto with music? Using music detracts from the performers and the performance..

    • @hornkraft9438
      @hornkraft9438 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@wordpressobsessed9067: Funny argument? When is the last time you saw that soloist perform with a professional symphony whose members all memorized their music? None.
      The memorization argument has often been used with amateur and school choirs. Amateur choirs don't look up at the director because their knowledge of the music isn't as good. Their reading skills aren't as good so they have to memorize and risk memory gaps instead. I think there may have been a famous college choir in Minnesota that influenced that thinking among high school choirs.
      In school music circles, it was said that choirs cannot emote with their eyes down in their music. Professional groups with proper training can both read their music and use the expressions that are contained within the music, all while glancing up to the director. No memory gaps from that.
      This group follows the English Cathedral tradition and uses countertenors with English composers. They know how to hold music and produce excellent performances. They probably have done a dozen performances already of the same thing and can sing it all from memory so it makes a better visual show, perhaps. I'm sure they don't try that with new additions to their repertoire.

    • @wordpressobsessed9067

      @@hornkraft9438 Maybe that's because the orchestra is not the soloist. It's impractical to think that violinists (or anyone else in the orchestra) are going to memorize their parts to a 40 minute Rachmaninoff concerto. A 4 minute vocal piece is quite different than a 4 movement concerto. Nice try.
