When my daughter started kindergarten, there was a questionnaire to let the teacher know a little bit about the kids. Every kid in her class named "normal" kid songs. This happened to be my daughter's favorite song at the time. She knew the lyrics at 3. 😂😂😂 She just turned 21 a few days ago and it's still on every playlist she has.

This song is a true story.
He was playing in a rock band in a club outside of Youngstown. When they were on break, a couple of black guys came up to them and asked, "Dont you white boys know any funky music?" He said he wrote the lyrics on a bar napkin at the end of the night in about ten minutes. Then, two days later he called up the bass player and wanted to get together to work on this new song he wrote.
Theres an actual 30 minute documentary on here about it that VH-1 did.
    ("One Hit Wonders", maybe?)

I too thought for years that this song was performed by a black group until I heard the origins of it. The band was playing at a club in PIttsburgh to a mostly black audience. The patrons didn't care for their music and someone told a band member to play some funky music, white boy, and the rest is history. This is one of my favorite songs from the disco days along with Disco Inferno. Love and respect, brother, hog fam Canada 🇨🇦 ❤

We all danced to this out on our stoops or at the roller rink back in the day (NYC). No one cared what anyone’s color was. We were all immigrants or 1st gen Americans, didn’t speak English at home, ate weird ethnic foods that we didn’t even know were weird until we were older and TV shows taught us to be embarrassed of our Moms’ delicious chicken feet, fermented gruels, and lamb with stewed okra. We only cared about who ran the fastest, threw the ball the farthest, or burped the loudest.
The change that has happened in our nation these past 10-15 years is absolutely disgusting. This song reminds me of the days before toxic ideologies were pushed by the powers-that-be to divide us and cause suspicion and an obsession with examining others for micro-aggressions and offenses 😢

Actually that's not true at all. If you check all the publicity photos for Wild Cherry, not one shows a racially integrated band.
For the record, here's the breakdown for truly integrated bands:
      The Chambers Brothers - 1965
      Sly & the Family Stone - 1966
      Santana - 1967
      WAR - 1969
      The Doobie Brothers - 1970/1971
Wild Cherry only added brothers for their born section in 1973.

This song was inspired by an experience they had when they played in a bar that caters to a mostly black patronage. This was back in 1973 or 1974, just as the Civil Rights turmoil was simmering down, the Vietnam War was ending and there was an overall good feeling for the future of America. Up until that time, the entertainment venues were mostly segregated. At that show, one of the patrons of the bar stood up during their set and shouted those words immortalized in this song

On man, you have GOT to hear the original studio recording that was such a massive hit in America's Bicentennial of 1976 or thereabouts and basically early on started already predicting what would happen in the early 80s which is where that huge battle between rocking disco would come together and be basically different elements of the same thing. It's not on display here quite as much, but on the hit single, it's got this blazing hardcore rock solo right in the middle of this disco stuff, and it's all so funky and fun and they know exactly what they're doing. KC and the Sunshine Band would have been I think a huge influence on them. You have to check them out as well. I'm your boogie man.

Yes! The lead singer IS the White Boy! Thank you! He says he's white right there in the lyrics. :)

That's what I want on my death certificate: "laid down the boogie and played that funky music 'till he died".

This song is great! Another that I highly recommend that you check out is “Pick up the Pieces” by Average White Band. The ferocity of their funk cannot be denied!

This was a HUGE hit. A one hit wonder I believe. I saw an interview that the lead singer knew it was going to be a mega hit so he did whatever he had to do legally to keep the song away from the label. He said its financed his life ever since.

One hit wonder. The best ever. I want it played at my funeral. I'm 70 and this came out in my 20s. Song is based on a real incident.

I've lived in Ohio my whole life. I didn't know Wild Cherry was from Steubenville. That is the same town Dean Martin was from. I know, you probably don't know who he is.....he was almost before my time too. Glad you enjoyed this song. When it came out (yeah, I was there) I also thought at least the lead singer was black.

The brothers are part of the band. That was the thing at that time. Wild Cherry wasn't the only one. Check out Average White Band's song Pick Up the Pieces and also KC & The Sunshine Band's I'm Your Boogie Man. You will see the horn section was lit in the mid 70's!
