    This is embarrassing, especially after all the patience everyone had, but I just realized the patrons name layer isn't visible. That means the one thing I needed to not get wrong I did. My sincerest apologies! I'd like to blame it on me being burnt out from the technical issues, but the truth is I just didn't catch it and I messed up. I looked into why and it seems I accidently situated it under the Groudon animation layer. I will be better moving forward. I am again, truly sorry. I'll be issuing a 1-month refund to you all. Additionally, even if you choose to discontinue prior, you'll still be credited in the next 2 videos. -Aaron the Editor

    phone cards were basically prepaid cards you could use at telephone booths back in the 90s and 2000s in Japan. They were often branded with various franchises and were extremely collectible, and Pokemon had a ton. Obviously this is before mobile phones took over but they would have been cool trinkets back then.

    This channel is god tier in all aspects
    Content, narration, script, video editing.
    It gives me the same happiness and bliss that the TCG gave me when I played it during my childhood/teenage years, saving money for a single booster pack and having to work around with whatever amalgamation of cards you'd get. I got a double rainbow energy on the Ex-emerald bosster once, and to this day it's my favorite card. I freaked out and almost passed out when I pulled it lol.
    You have no idea how much a channel like this mean to me.
    I played the TCG from the Ruby & Sapphire era up to half of Black and White expansion (around BW2). I quit the game due to money (3rd world country moment) and time restraints (getting my first job and university).
    I got back around Sun and Moon but dropped again soon after, since I didn't like how the meta game eas developing. Games are EXTREMELY fast now, with turn 1 settup that can instantly win. And wtf are these numbers? 350hp pokemon with 240 dmg attack for 3 energies? Lmao sry but no, too "exaggerated", overdone, if that makes sense.
    To me, gen 4 (from diamond and pearl up ot platinum arceus and hgss) will always be the gold era for pokemon TCG. Gen 3 close behind. Gen 1 and 2 on the TCG was also really, really nice, I played it a lot on the Game boy game and with my cousin once we managed to get our hands into some base and neo set cards. I miss playing the TCG so bad, but there's no one around to play old formats, only the actual, recent standard format which I really dont like.
    Thanks for these videos, you have no idea how incredible they are, seeing people really passionate about the TCG talking about it and it history in a very clear and well written-spoken-edited way.
    Good work everyone on the channel, I hope you guys keep it up, I'd love to one day see the videos about gen 3 and gen 4 om the TCG.
    GG!

      We're glad we could spark that nostalgia! We're also big fans of the RS and DP eras and will definitely be making videos on them in the future, so stay tuned for that! The modern formats definitely got out of hand and aren't quite there yet, but they are making good steps towards improvements in gameplay pace. It could be in a great place again after another rotation or two. Thanks so much for tuning in and sharing your story!

    I just wanted to comment to say thank you for what you do. These videos add a new depth to my love of Pokemon and the TCG specifically. I have found that I have a deeper appreciation both for the current trials and tribulations of the game as well as for the cards I collected as a kid without ever really getting involved with how the game itself worked. Anytime someone in my life shows even mild interest in the TCG I send them your way and time and time again I hear glowing praise for how well these videos present the history of a game that was ever present for folks of a certain age, whether they participated or not. Thanks and I hope you're doing well.

    This may just be coincidence, but one of the Junior finals players you mentioned, Satoshi Kato, shares the name of someone who went on to have good success playing the Yugioh Card Game competitively. He won a major event in 2010, and I believe attended the world championship in 2009.

    While i dont mind the long wait between episodes, the absolute love and the research ( and likely translation of all the documents) you do for the history of the early years of the TCG is amazing! its a labor of love!
    Also i might have a clue/idea what those "phonecards" at 14:30 are , they are likely prepaid/subscription cards to public payphones! im not from Japan, but they had a cardsystem in the EU for payphones during the late 90s early 2000's here, before mobile phones became cheaper and more accessable

    Wow yet another incredible video!! :D It's SO COOL that we were able to watch actual footage from this tournament. It's so hilarious and baffling that they banned Computer Search and gave everybody a Computer Error to add as a 61st card in their decks. I'd love that for a smaller event but this event feels way too important for a silly deck gimmick! I also really love that a Charizard deck won a Blastoise-themed tournament haha

    It's probably down here somewhere, and tou could just google it, but a phone card was basically a card that had minutes on it you could use at a pay phone. Basically the pay phine version if a track phone. You would buy them for people going on trip you wanted to hear from, so ot was like allocating time to spend with them on the phone because they are far away.

    That format with all of the last chance shenanigans going on must have been hell for the players. If a TO tried to suggest something like that in any modern era they would have gotten laughed out of the venue. And it somehow got worse when you described the next tournaments being curated card lists until the finals. Sure sealed and limited are fun, but switching it up for the finals sounds idiotic.
    Being able to see actual video for the finals of this mega battle is wild, so much tcg coverage is completely lost its great that this still exists.

    The discarding of Fire Energy over DCE for Fire Spin actually had to happen if Charizard was to attack again in a reasonable timeframe! Fire Spin required the discard of 2 Energy CARDS, not energy in general like it would've been nowadays. So discarding DCE would still require a Fire to be discarded too.
    Awesome series! What a wild tournament from start to finish.

    • @rubyretro
      @rubyretro  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You're correct there. Nick had probably misremembering the exact wording on charizard, being that the most recent wording of it from Pokémon TCG Classic actually just reads energy. Thanks for the correction!

    I understand the game was still very young; but how did they not implement a mandatory sleeve policy almost immediately? Not only is it to the benefit of the card’s owner as the card’s condition will be preserved better that way but also unsleeved cards opens up the door to so many avenues of cheating; namely stacking. Maybe it’s because I come from a predominantly Yugioh and Magic playing background but I would think even the PTCG would realize the possible issues with this almost instantly and implement a rule regarding it.

    • @rubyretro
      @rubyretro  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      You have to consider that this was near the start of card games in general, not just Pokémon so the standard to go off of would've been traditional playing cards. Sleeves weren't really a baseline standard the way they are now.
