Seeing the RAMONES as a teenager in the early 80s was the time of my life!!! Jeezus, Marky's drumming is friggin' PERFECT. Dee Dee was always my favorite. We would ALWAYS get in position by Dee Dee's side of the stage before the show would start! I literally had his sweat hit me, and he once handed me a bass PICK that I still have, and that I cherish. Later, in the early 90s, I met Dee Dee and got a chance to chat with him. He was SO nice, SO friendly.
That's awesome man! I've heard the real true punks would position themselves on Dee Dee's side of the stage. Wish I could have seen them. I didn't get into the Ramones until High School, but that was the late 90's after they had broken up.

You heard by word of mouth or the local Indie News Paper that the bands you like were coming to town! And it was NOT like everyone at your school liked or even knew who the Ramones (or Minor Threat, Misfits, Etc.) even were! At my school in D.C. (quite literally the school where Minor Threat went- like 2 years ahead of me) there were 1600 students. I'd say at most 20 were punks!) Those days were SO much fun, it's hard to describe. Most of my Ramones tickets say $10 on them. My Clash Ticket says $7. Haha crazy! Have a great day, and I'm glad you're a Ramones fan! There are a lot of other fun bands to enjoy these days, and I hope you have a ton of fun out there at the shows.

I don't care if people consider them a punk band or a rock band, they were tremendous. I just wish I could have been old enough to go to their shows in their prime, I would have been at every one. I even remember the flyer for their show in D.C. where I lived then, it was with Necros and Government Issue at the Wilson Center. I already liked them but I was just a LITTLE bit too young to actually attend one of their shows. These shows were the REAL DEAL. They were in VERY dangerous parts of town and being really young it was honestly pretty scary to go to punk shows. I mean, it was NOT like it is now. (I did see the very first "Danzig" band tour in '89 in a small club in D.C. and that was phenomenal.)

What we listened to was Kiss, The Cars, Peter Frampton. Now that I look back, I feel we were cheated from not getting exposure to the Ramones both on MTV or Radio.
I was lucky enough to go to over 30 Ramones concerts in my life. And when it was over it was like you went through a war and your head was completely traumatized. Your ears rang until the next day 4 up to 48 hours. It was a cathartic experience like no other. They didn't sound like a band. They sounded like an orchestra. It was a total, full, powerful sound that lifted you up I made you feel like you were literally floating on air. There will never ever be nothing even close to what a Ramones concert was like.
This year 1980 with a wine bottle walking over the streets and with a guitar playing punk rock, listening too much Ramones to get Strong. Good times never come back. A perfect generation for listening to rock.
They always stayed faithful to their roots and never sold themselves out. Their personality and originality broke all bounds! In Argentina they are considered to be te best punk band to ever have stepped on this planet. Long live The Ramones!

I cant agree. 1980...The Clash had been playing live now for over 2 years, with live shows that equalled or surpassed the energy here. Dont get me wrong, I saw the Ramones live at The Electric Circus in Manchester and they were brilliant. But this is a French audience - completely different to a UK crowd. We are so close yet somehow so different, in so may ways.
You gotta love that the Ramones were literally *so* tight onstage on a night-to-night basis, that TH-cam's algorithm can't distinguish these performances of the songs from ones that took place two months earlier on another continent.

I had a friend who went to see the Ramones live and said it was the best live show he ever went to! He raved about them because he said they were real a rock n roll band and the energy never let up! They were like a gang with their leather jackets. Long gone now. RIP Ramones

I saw the movie, went out the next day and purchased "ITS ALIVE." Never understood why folks did not know who they were or did not like them. From the first few frantic notes, I thought "This is what Rock is supposed to be." They remain the greatest.
Happily I’m over 40 and have seen The Ramones in person in concert in Los Angeles. I even bumped into Johnny Ramone at The Shrine Comic Show while he was shopping for horror movie memorabilia. Glen Danzig of The Misfits was at another Shrine show looking for horror movie stuff too. Back in those days it was amazing who you could run into. Hardly anybody even knew who they were because punk wasn’t very popular.
I was present at their performance in Lancaster (UK) in February of 1980. I kept the iconic T shirt I bought that night for decades. Love them guys and their music.

I saw them in DC at the Wax Museum in 82. I was part of the punk scene then and had always liked their stuff, but live....!!!! What a blast!!! I loved how they never stopped between songs. Nothing better for a hyperactive 19 year old not willing to take my Ritalin than to experience them live. I have turned both my kids onto them and It's skateboarding in the kitchen to the Ramones these days. They have no idea how watching them rock out is a time trip for dad. Never Surrender!!!!!!!
We always embraced The Ramones in the UK same with The Cramps and every time I saw both bands the whole house erupted you had no choice but to go crazy great times!!!!!!

They sound good live here, towards the end they played so fast live the songs were almost unrecognizable. I like their sound here much better. Just my opinion.
Chris J for me, in a weird way, some of the songs lost their power a little when they went REALLY fast in their later years. This period has the right balance of speed and raw power to their sound. Also proves my theory that End of the Century would have been better without Phil Spector.
agree.....I asked Joey after their last gig they did @ The Masquerade in Atlanta about singing the songs so much faster he laughed and said they had that many more songs to do and squeeze in the same 1 hour set! So He had a point I guess.

I have been lucky to be able to join them on the loco live tour in Germany Belgium and Spain as a roadie. Great times. For always in my heart and now my kids cover them in their band. Legends!!!!

For all the musicians that think The Ramones were scrubs - I challenge any of you GIT grads to just try and play this for an hour and see if you can. The Ramones were always tight and professional and always gave 100% and always a great show. Just being able to endure their pace without breaks to sip your wine spritzer -good luck! I was lucky enough to see them in the late 1970's with both Tommy and Marky - both were great timekeepers and Johnny never missed a note. DeeDee played exactly what the songs needed, if he had tried to be Stanley Clarke the whole thing would fall apart - that's what musicians just don't understand. The Ramones changed thousands of peoples lives, and made thousands of us start our own bands, instead of alienating us musically like the Prog-Rock bands ended up doing.

Hiddenjava playing guitar like Johnny Ramone is hard. Yeah, there's only 3 or 4 chords in a song, but try playing all downstrokes, that fast and tight. It hurts. Yeah, he wasn't a flashy lead player, but he was far from unskilled.
I can play any Ramones song on guitar but what I cannot do is do it for 90 minutes like Johnny did. Not to mention he had such a fluid motion when he played. It was like he had no wrists. He was all hands. He was smooth as butter. He made his guitars sound like an orchestra of guitars and he was playing a Mosrite with one single pick up. It continues to blow my mind to this day

What made the Ramones truly special and separated them from the pack was their elaborate song structures, with deep, pondering lyrics riffing on the plight of man, and elongated guitar solos featuring complex chord layering & progressions. Moreover, how the drummer was able to incorporate the timing & syncopation of his immense drum-kit without overpowering the rhythm section was supremely vital as well.
Lyrically they actually had more range than most performers today, from politics and war to teen boredom, horror, rejection in love, mental illness, and even stabbing someone as a male prostitute (53rd & 3rd).

I love punk rock, but I'm aware that it was not about instrumental virtuosity, it was good songs and energy. It's like in the 70s if you loved KISS you had to say Peter Criss was the best drummer, which he was NOT. Non-players are funny, man.
this is the best Ramones I've ever heard by a long way. Their studio stuff isn't half as good as this. Crazy tight from whole band, perfect production.
The best band ever for sure!! Saw their show in Tampa FL, shot photos of the whole show from the front row. Got a pick from Johnny. Went to their hotel the next day before they left and talked with them with more pix. Looking for them in my archive. Consider myself lucky to have had that experience for sure.

I find myself watching this video over and over. Can't get enough of Johnny's wall of sound. He shreds in this performance.
The French at the time were not allowed to go crazy. It was all about being fancy. Mickey Leigh said that on the memoir ' I slept with joey Ramone '
I think that helped fuel the intensity of their performance in this television performance. They weren't accustomed to a calm audience by this point.

I saw them in DC at the Wax Museum in 82. I was part of the punk scene then and had always liked their stuff, but live....!!!! What a blast!!! I loved how they never stopped between songs. Nothing better for a hyperactive 19 year old not willing to take my Ritalin than to experience them live. I have turned both my kids onto them and It's skateboarding in the kitchen to the Ramones these days. They have no idea how watching them rock out is a time trip for dad. Never Surrender!!!!!!!

We always embraced The Ramones in the UK same with The Cramps and every time I saw both bands the whole house erupted you had no choice but to go crazy great times!!!!!!

They sound good live here, towards the end they played so fast live the songs were almost unrecognizable. I like their sound here much better. Just my opinion.
Chris J for me, in a weird way, some of the songs lost their power a little when they went REALLY fast in their later years. This period has the right balance of speed and raw power to their sound. Also proves my theory that End of the Century would have been better without Phil Spector.
agree.....I asked Joey after their last gig they did @ The Masquerade in Atlanta about singing the songs so much faster he laughed and said they had that many more songs to do and squeeze in the same 1 hour set! So He had a point I guess.

I have been lucky to be able to join them on the loco live tour in Germany Belgium and Spain as a roadie. Great times. For always in my heart and now my kids cover them in their band. Legends!!!!

For all the musicians that think The Ramones were scrubs - I challenge any of you GIT grads to just try and play this for an hour and see if you can. The Ramones were always tight and professional and always gave 100% and always a great show. Just being able to endure their pace without breaks to sip your wine spritzer -good luck! I was lucky enough to see them in the late 1970's with both Tommy and Marky - both were great timekeepers and Johnny never missed a note. DeeDee played exactly what the songs needed, if he had tried to be Stanley Clarke the whole thing would fall apart - that's what musicians just don't understand. The Ramones changed thousands of peoples lives, and made thousands of us start our own bands, instead of alienating us musically like the Prog-Rock bands ended up doing.

@@iacopogobbato539 All 3 were big influences on my playing - Wetton with early KC was a beast - Squire was my tone inspiration and Dee Dee got me out there on a stage - met him in 1977 and he really changed my life! Glad you appreciate good music - it comes in many shapes and sizes.

JOHNNY RAMONE made it look easy, but don't kid yourself. To play like he did took a lot of blood and guts, not to mention skill

Hiddenjava playing guitar like Johnny Ramone is hard. Yeah, there's only 3 or 4 chords in a song, but try playing all downstrokes, that fast and tight. It hurts. Yeah, he wasn't a flashy lead player, but he was far from unskilled.

I can play any Ramones song on guitar but what I cannot do is do it for 90 minutes like Johnny did. Not to mention he had such a fluid motion when he played. It was like he had no wrists. He was all hands. He was smooth as butter. He made his guitars sound like an orchestra of guitars and he was playing a Mosrite with one single pick up. It continues to blow my mind to this day

The best band ever for sure!! Saw their show in Tampa FL, shot photos of the whole show from the front row. Got a pick from Johnny. Went to their hotel the next day before they left and talked with them with more pix. Looking for them in my archive. Consider myself lucky to have had that experience for sure.
