Not only did you tell me how to humanely dispatch the live lobster, but you also gave the timings for it's weight. Thank you Bart for wonderfully succinct and easily followed instructions including how to dress it. Very grateful.
Thank you for putting this up. I love lobster but I don’t want to cause anything to experience unnecessary pain. Boiling it alive has always sounded wrong to me and when I read that it takes 5 min to stop trying to escape I was horrified. Because of that I have never attempted to make lobster and I am hesitant to even order it at a restaurant. This was so helpful to me. Thank you!
actually if you don’t Boil crabs or lobster before eating them you could die from a strain of bacteria that grows specifically on their rotting flesh right after it dies. Boiling it kills the harmful bacteria and also makes the lobster look and taste better. Also lobsters and crabs don’t have big enough brains to feel pain
I also twist the tail, but than I twist te lower part of the tail, you can slide the lobster out of his shell, remove the upper part of his tail (saving the meat ofc) and discard the intestinal tract. For the claws I also use a heavy knife and hit it with the cuttingside fast and hard, than twist and crack the claw open. Never the less, good video!
no one ever tells you what to do when youre sitting at a table in a restaurant eating a lobster, and you pull off the tail only for it to have green lobster shit come out and get all over the place.
Bart I have a far eassier way for you to take the tail out of the shell. Once you have separated the tail from the body, go to the fins at the end of the tail and pull out the middle one completely. Then pickup the tail in your left hand back towards your hand and straighten it out as much as possible. Take the pick and stick it in under the exposed underside shell, as far as possible and gently pull out the entire tail. At a restaurant you can do the same thing except you use a fork to pull the tail out. I have done it many times (living in Maine) and it works easily and always. Good luck !!
THANK YOU SO MUCH for killing the lobsters quickly & as humanely as possible! And posting it! Hope a great chef like you can lead the public in the right direction! This is 21st century barbaric ways of killings don't/ shouldn't belong to our kitchen! ( I am a vegetarian myself , but I always believed that when I was a meat eater before. And I regret that I had boiled them a live back then as being told that they didn't feel it even though they tried to escape out of the pot!).
Thank you Atsuko for this beautiful response. Even while being a vegetarian it's great to read your appreciation. Hope you still enjoy my other videos as well and maybe my stories regarding sustainable fishing will make you decide to have a little taste! (or cook the dishes with a veggie proof fish replacement ;-)) Happy cooking. Thanks again! Cheers
Bart's Fish Tales Thank you so much for your response! If you have any great vegetarian dish ( I don't eat any animals that include fish...but I eat eggs & rennet free cheese ...mainly egg whites and veggies )Especially for the coming holidays , I'd love to watch & try cooking them ,so please let me know if you do! Thanks , again!
Except it totally is not the most humane way to do it. Check my comment or this article Splitting involves rapidly cutting through the centre-line of the head, thorax (chest) and abdomen with a large, sharp knife. Cutting must occur along the longitudinal midline (lengthways) to destroy all the nerve centres (Figure 2).
Looks easier to handle than a crab, and doesn't look like there is anything like the dead man's fingers to handle. Are crayfish and langoustines of the same family as lobster. Like the piece in your book about choosing claw sizes on first dates. Thank You Bart.
Very nice information! Very helpfull :) I really like the sweetness of the lobster meat. There are so many good recipes with it, I especially like chinese black pepper lobster or japanese sushi with lobster. I'm not so much into just cooked with butter. Hope to see some more lobster and shellfish recipes !
Thanks Bart Very well done - very carefully explained A+ I am 74+yrs old, - never cooked or cleaned a lobster in my life! 'Bout time I learned eh? Now I'm looking forward to getting some at some point in time 🙂 Thanks again Bart! Most helpful! Oh, and Remember Bart - God truly does love YOU 🙂
Another tip is take off the rubber bands before cooking. Nobody likes boiled rubber favor in their food. They won't bite unless you put your fingers between their claws
Marcel no i am quite sure lobsters have those, but not what i was talking about. If you imagine where the upper thigh would be where the leg snaps off, there is a substantiated amount of meat. You can get to it easily when you remove the whole leg girdle and use a pick.
Thank you so much for all this info! Fast and so easy! Brief and very informational! One thing missing is the insides (roe).
Perfect video on how 2 cook and dissect a lobster, best I've ever seen. Thanks for all the tips. See you next Fishy Friday.
Thanks for watching Shirley and thank you for the great compliment, glad you like it.

Hi Kristina, I (along with many other chefs) believe the method I use in this video is the most "humane" way to kill the lobster. Thanks for watching.
People are careful not to cause harm to animals but they don't know how many people they've hurt in their lives.

@@لؤي-ك9س your statement pretty much sums up what an assho*e u are
@@لؤي-ك9س damn who hurt you my man
This is pretty cool, I love how you showed us the most humane way to kill him first and also so we don't waste any of the meat too :).
wrong. the fins in the tail have meat too and he throw it away
yes- head to tail, literally.
Bart, your beard is so handsome! I think many of your fans agree!
Damian Rhea It’s pretty patchy and ugly. Don’t know what the hell you’re talking about

Hi just curious do you eat the head of the lobster?
What's about the head and everything inside? What do you do with it? Thanks!
What about the insides in the tail section?
This is a Maine Lobster, the tail is all muscle.
00:48 Sebastian NOOOO!
Sebastian did it wrong i also feel bad for that lobster

What about his the LOBSTER 'S
digestive track?
So the midsection that the 8 legs were on gets discarded?

me too. I'm so much more conscience today. Gratefully.
Well done. Brief and professionally described.

Thank you for great help
You should always remove the rubber bands, it will taste way better! I'm from the east coast of Canada, home of the best lobster in the world
D B from Nova Scotia hère, scrolling through looking for this comment.
kreeg gelijk zin om het zelf te maken, snel weer naar de sligro! Kun je ook laten zien hoe je een krab doet?
What to use, if you don't have a lobster pick?
So yummy lobster i like it @ keep blogging
i like the new intro

Wonderful, thanks!
Glad you like it Paul
Thank you for the cooking times! A lot of other videos leave that out.
Thank you for watching.
so grateful that you showed how to kill it humanely. No reason for the to suffer slowly.
what about small lobsters? like crayfish size
what about frozen lobster we have a lot in UK but not sure how to cook or prepare , please
If it's frozen it's already cooked, just drop in boiling water for 2-3 minutes to heat.
@@timgreen2426 thanks Tim, I will try next time
That was a great video. But, you didn't show people how to remove the digestive tract from the tail.
i eat all of the tail...why complicate it?
I've only had a lobster tail what is best just a lobster tail for the entire lobster
Don't forget to harvest the tomalley. You're missing out if you just toss it.
Je kookt een kreeft best zonder de rubber aan de scharen, het rubber geeft een rare smaak af tijdens het koken...
Left too much body meat in the head area.
What about the urine?
Daam. I just threw it straight into the boiling water.
I'll do it this way from now on.
good its better to pit them out insted of letting them boil alive like some medevil tourture shit
You are a humane chef for sure. I've heard to put the shellfish in the freezer for 30 mins first, then proceed as you've had. Your thoughts?
cooking rubber. nice.
Another tip is take off the rubber bands before cooking. Nobody likes boiled rubber favor in their food. They won't bite unless you put your fingers between their claws
Then niggas start talking about how da rubber bands were made to be cooked harmlessly along side da lobsters or to withstand high temperatures :T
Hi Bart. ...don't you need to de vein a lobster?
thank you, 😋
will cook my lobster tonight 😍
Don’t you have to clean the green stuff on the bottom? Isn’t that the poop ?
No it's not. This lobster pasta is called tomalley. You can eat it, it's really delicious actually. Try it!
There is more meat in the upper leg joints
aren`t those the unedible "dead man's fingers" ?
Edit: Sorry I messed up. Only crabs got those things.

Biggest audiences is in the United States. Where are you using grams?
Is it weird that I eat that green gut stuff
NO, it's a delicacy called tomalley.
Not eating anything in the body?
Yes I am eating the meat in the body too. For example, this recipe from Mozambique: th-cam.com/video/IC_x1k3tMK0/w-d-xo.html
You did not remove the urine
I just cook lobster and use my hands and a hammer
Im sorry that is not how you cook a lobster you have to take the rubber bands off
Cook a lobster??
So you just boil it
I love animals
Omiya mou shindeiru ☝
Chopping behind eyes and down middle don’t kill them
Well that was a total fail, he left the bands on and also didn't take the meat from the body. This is a not how to do it vid.
