On it's face property tax is a taking. Eventually you lose your house unless the area is in decline. This would prevent many issues caused by gentrification. Can you imagine finally paying off your home, and then needing to sell it because your retirement does not pay enough to cover the property tax? This is a real occurance in many Texas cities (not just East Austin, but certainly there.) To the teacher's union worriers - stop crying over taking your cut from a different source. Maybe focus on turning out a better product, so that taxpayers are happy to pay to educate other people's children?

While I do recognize the need for property taxes they should have NEVER been based off the "assessed value" of the property. Living in an area where the value of my home doubled no fewer than three times in the decades that I've lived here, so that 1200 sqft is a 1.5 million home is just ludicrous, how much I pay should not be influenced by the desire of others (or worse investors) to live here, now I'm lucky in that my state passed a proposition to protect homeowners from outrageous increases (proposition 13) but there are people who are still against it often those who buy into an area now they're paying 20x the property taxes I am.
But there are so many other saner ways to do so if you are going to say property taxes are needed, things like parcel taxes that local voters decide to put forth so they can say "hey we want more money for schools, this is how we do it", or hell even have it base on physical size of property and/or home that is on it so that if you have a small home that just happens to be in an "up and coming" part of the state (e.g. Biotech center of the world!) that $150k home you bought doesn't end making you pay taxes on a $1M property. But ultimately, I do think property taxes should go away, want money? Have an income tax at the local level (of which the state of Texas doesn't have either). Someone scrapes together all their stuff to buy a home, they shouldn't ever be in jeopardy of losing it unless they can't pay off the mortgage (and only then because they technically don't own it, the bank does... yet the bank doesn't currently pay property taxes on "their" property either!), and if you want to help with the housing crisis only put property tax on vacant buildings as a way to say "hey you're charging to much for rent" or something.

There is no need for property tax, zero justification. If you have to pay every year to keep your home then you don't own it. They tax our income, they tax the money we spend, inflation taxes the money we save. I think they have enough of our money don't you think?? There should be no tax that isn't connected to cash flow. Land is necessary for human life and freedom. The land was taxed when you bought it and that should be the end of it. It is the most evil tax, abolish it.

Read between the lines - if there is no property and state tax, then that deficit would have to be made in in sales tax- meaning a huge spike in sales tax rates.
Sales tax is the most regressive type of tax because the less money you have, the bigger the bite sales tax takes out of your income. People with less money will spend all their income on goods and services, while the rich will only spend a small portion.

The school taxes are incredibly high to support building $400 million high schools and $50 million football stadiums plus most districts send money primarily to the border districts to cover the children of undocumented migrants. It's why Abbott has been bussing new migrants to other states since the federal government mandates educating undocumented children, but doesn't pay for it. Charter and private schools usually have far less expensive campuses, but have better performing students. Public school district superintendents often make $300k+.
