I love the casual sacredness of temples like these.

I love segments like this. I grew up a decade or two after this was produced, and while it was "stimulating", I don't remember learning much from children's television of the 90's. This format is informative without an ounce of patronization, which seems to be prevalent in similar shows that have come since. I feel like a curiousity for the outdoors, science and culture might have come to me a lot sooner had shows like this been at the forefront of kids' programming.

There is a limit to what you can fit in to a segment that is meant to be no more than 4 minutes - Rob

For people hard of hearing/English as second language:
1:31 "The main deity worshiped in the temple is Mazu (媽祖婆, "Ma Cho Po" in the local dialect)"
    2:49 "center of the altar"

My wife is from Thailand and I've visited Thai temples with her and have done that cane stick business multiple times. They're quite nice places - Temples, they feel a lot more positive than European or Russian Orthodox (my religion) churches.

I really enjoy the segments where you guys visit other locations and give such a detailed presentation. I'm in my 30's and love these clips. Now I just need to try and get my kids into watching them too.

丙申were the two characters on the stick. They're actually used as ordinal numbers (the 3rd and 9th respectively).

Well, number 4 is considered unlucky by Chinese as it sounds a lot like the word "death". Coincidently, that's how many apples you offered to the goddess/homeless :)

    • @89horizon

Rob doesn't seem unlucky though... maybe the gods/goddesses were in a good mood that day! :O

Almost all segments were about using your intelligence and learning about the mechanics of the world, so it's curious that they would spend time on superstition.
