- Rob visits the oldest Chinese temple in Singapore Thian Hock Keng, and explains how its magnificent architecture, ornaments and fittings are used in worship, and there are a couple of puzzles to get you going.

I love the casual sacredness of temples like these.
I love segments like this. I grew up a decade or two after this was produced, and while it was "stimulating", I don't remember learning much from children's television of the 90's. This format is informative without an ounce of patronization, which seems to be prevalent in similar shows that have come since. I feel like a curiousity for the outdoors, science and culture might have come to me a lot sooner had shows like this been at the forefront of kids' programming.
I don’t think I have ever heard Rob say “umm...” or “ah...”. Presentation level 100.
Much appreciated - kind of you - Rob
Wish they still did something like this today. Very interesting and fascinating video. Thanks
Amazing in just 6 minutes, respectful and meaningful all along.. always grateful and indebted. Thank you
My pleasure - Rob
THis guy was popular vlogger long before youtube and vlogging were cool.
and before people were pretending that "vlogging" was a goddamn word.
Holy shit the world is fucked
Kinda wish you went into the construction. I am facinated how it's built without a nail.
There is a limit to what you can fit in to a segment that is meant to be no more than 4 minutes - Rob
For people hard of hearing/English as second language:
1:31 "The main deity worshiped in the temple is Mazu (媽祖婆, "Ma Cho Po" in the local dialect)"
2:49 "center of the altar"
My wife is from Thailand and I've visited Thai temples with her and have done that cane stick business multiple times. They're quite nice places - Temples, they feel a lot more positive than European or Russian Orthodox (my religion) churches.
I really enjoy the segments where you guys visit other locations and give such a detailed presentation. I'm in my 30's and love these clips. Now I just need to try and get my kids into watching them too.
Thanks for watching and the kind remarks - Rob
nooice longer episode.
Very interesting! Thanks for uploading!
Enjoyed the video. Thanks for posting! So did it take a few tries with cane sticks before one fell out?
Not as I remember - it was all pretty straightforward - Rob
丙申were the two characters on the stick. They're actually used as ordinal numbers (the 3rd and 9th respectively).
Thankyou for opening our minds!
💜
Opening them to what? Demonic spirits and false gods?
Well, number 4 is considered unlucky by Chinese as it sounds a lot like the word "death". Coincidently, that's how many apples you offered to the goddess/homeless :)
Rob doesn't seem unlucky though... maybe the gods/goddesses were in a good mood that day! :O
All roads lead to Scalextric.. Sorry guys but I couldn't resist that one Lol ;-)
Wow it's hard to find these temples nowadays.
Reminds me of a magic 8 ball
We call it a Horoscope
Sounds like Todd Rundgren did the music for this one.
Early 80's Todd
That "what is it?" segment was the precursor to Tamiya Mini 4WD cars and boy were they way cooler 😊
Mr Rogers
Fuck mate that was really interesting. I had a girlfriend from Taiwan but she didn't really know the details of the stuff. She told me a few things but this video taught me more. Thanks 70s teacher man
Great to come across a TV show like this from that era that isn't culturally or racially insensitive 👍
never thought I would find biblical proofs on your show
No such thing. Explaining what people do doesn't mean agreement or endorsement - Rob
It’s amazing people believe any of this.
Almost all segments were about using your intelligence and learning about the mechanics of the world, so it's curious that they would spend time on superstition.
It never hurts for people to know about the rest of the world. Explaining and describing how people behave does not mean that you necessarily agree with what they do.
@@CuriosityShow Agreed! The subject matter really stood out is all.
so weird, a bunch of bored people who try to delude themselves with their weird and wrong believe-system
So your people are the ones with right believe-system?
@@sirtanchannel5848 my people? I am an independet human being able to think critically and for myself. But you're right, in the western world, many losers delude themselves too with mindless entertainment and toxic belief-systems which makes them a winner when in reality they are lazy losers
