That little "slide up" riff is one of the most emotional things I've ever heard. Such a simple sound can make you feel all sorts of ways. Hearing it in "O Brother" helped make that movie an all-time favorite.
I started learning this song from your lessons just before xmas. while i'm still ropey, and make mistakes, i'm so grateful to you. i didn't have a clue how to play this song before. i've posted a vid of me playing a couple of verses - not to show off, but to show how a non-musician can make progress by following good tutorials on youtube. cheers. vincent lloyd
Well damn, I just put my resonator back in standard tuning! Open Dm is an absolute blast to play around with, especially using a slide. Thanks for posting this!
Thank's a ton! While I wanted to do more of a Skip James version than your Oh Brother/King arrangement, your Vids put me on track to easily pick out Skip's old recording. So now I'm doing cool hybrid mix of the two! I've been playing by ear for 40 years--I'm with Mike on TABs--but Skynard/Alman Bros was as close to the Delta style as I've ever played until about a year ago. Anyway, If you ever get to NYC, drop me a line; lunch is on me, anywhere you like. SERIOUSLY! --Jim Crapanzano
You didn't finish the lesson compared to the piece played at 2:50 there are two small alterations. Writing a tab now and watching how and when each note is played. Knew I was missing a small piece. A huge thanks for the video though. Much appreciated
Oh so I wasn't wrong in my initial tuning! I started piecing it together by ear, well, by feeling. Cannot transpose sheet music to the fretboard. Keyboard is not too hard, but I can't sight read or lay down any Chopin from a page of notes in a casual sort of way. I'll end up bumbling into my own arrangement that would sadden his poor pickled heart.
This is kinda a point. I occasionally use DADAAD which I call "open D". With this, you can play barres that sound neither major nor minor. With DADFAD you always have to be aware you are in minor by default.
@Bill Haggard yeah and I don't remember asking u shit period, you're the one who replied on my comment being a smartass prick for no reason, so go fuck yourself
@Bill Haggard yeah.......whatever the hell that means, lol it must suck to realize at your age that you'll always be mediocre, and outclassed by people half your age, 😂 you suck
I was going to buy new stings, but dog my cats! I have to purchase heavier gauge strings now! Yeah I know that was the plan, it just...I wanted to get some mileage first! Dat fret buzz, doe!

Thats a spooky lick. The variation of that lick that he used on Devil got my Woman is even greasier.
Agreed 100%
Man... It's been years I wanted to be able to play that song! You made a dream come true. Thanks a lot!
I’ve been wanting to learn this song for over 10 years! Heard it on O Brother Where Art Thou & never knew the name of the tune. Thank you!!
I'm gonna play the shit out of this

Wanted to learn this since I first heard it on o brother where art thou as a kid. Now I can actually play it thanks to you!

You know what else is hard.
Playing it. Very hard
That guitar and the fireplace behind you makes you look like you are in Andy Griffiths living room.
I normally don't like blues very much, but this song, oh man this song is really good.
Thanks for posting this! I've been playing a butchered version for months now and finally have it right!

DADFAd tuning to make it easy

Isso é bonito demais !
thank you for this.
Thanks for showing the tuning! Just saw Rebecca from Larkin Poe in concert. She just said open D tuning, not open Dm.

@Bill Haggard and for the record, I'm half your age and I can play MUCH much better than you
@Bill Haggard yeah.......whatever the hell that means, lol it must suck to realize at your age that you'll always be mediocre, and outclassed by people half your age, 😂 you suck
💚🤘🏻🍀 thank you
Thank you, thank you, Thank you.
I change A=432 tune A/D up just my preference
I was going to buy new stings, but dog my cats! I have to purchase heavier gauge strings now! Yeah I know that was the plan, it just...I wanted to get some mileage first! Dat fret buzz, doe!
Just realized this guitar looks just like Skip's own.
Great! Thanks a lot!
i cant find part 3 and 4!?
So, DADFAD. Almost DADGAD.
can you play it in normal tuning?
No.
3:30 is the part where my mind got blown
same effect here.
zenithal song
I made my version in Open G I think it's easier and sounds great! Check it out on my profile if you have time and feel free to tell me what you think!
I like what you did with it.
1 and a hall minutes and you are still describing the tuning.....
funny thing , he won ´t even speak of love or women in this song -
As soon as I hear any song that requires for me to detune the guitar is basura
get the hell out of here buddy
