Watching this solo run with Zubat was like watching a superhero origin story (Martha!!)! 🤣 Your determination and skill in navigating the game with just one Pokemon is truly impressive. 😻 I can't wait to see what other challenges you take on in the future - maybe a solo run with a Magikarp?!
This pokemon frustrated the heck out of me as a kid. Going through caves and having to battle endless droves of Zubats was always a task (this was before I got smart and realized how easy they can be to one shot). Because of that I never really played with one on my team, so this run was a treat!
Zubats were the bane of my existence as a kid! Why do I need to encounter 700 of them going through Mt.Moon??? Then they'd confuse you... ugh! But this was a fun run. I've never used any of the Zubat line members except for against Erika in Radical Red 😅
It really feels like at some point before the release of Gold/Silver, GameFreak looked at Golbat and was like "yeah this thing is really cheeks, let's make it cool". And so they did. I think it might actually have a more difficult time solo'ing Red and Blue than FR/LG. Even ignoring the fact that Zubat was the first Pokémon I ever caught in Red back in 1999, as soon as it got an evolution and actual moves in GSC it became one of my favorite mons and I always made a point of catching one as soon as possible to start early on the friendship "grind". Good balanced stats, crazy speed, evolves early, bunch of fun coverage moves, useful resistances, good for Nuzlocking, available in many areas and usually very early... plus it's a vampire and that's just cool. Or at least it was to my nine year old self. Anyway, I've been binging your content and I'm really enjoying your style. I particularly love the idea of using an evolutionary line, something always feels off about starting the game with a level 5 Crobat or finshing it with a level 70 Zubat. It also makes for a smoother and more realistic "experience" as your stats and general power increase along with that of the enemies you're facing.
I would agree that Zubat has an easier time in FR/LG but that's only if it's allowed to evolve to Crobat. A big reason why I play allowing evolutions is because of how grindy the runs became. I'd much rather have a lvl 75 Crobat taking on Round 2 than a lvl 75 Zubat still getting eaten alive by Round 1 Lorelei. I didn't catch a Zubat as a kid. Except when I was going for all 150. I really didn't like its cry heh. I'm glad to hear you've been enjoying the content!! I'm so excited to keep making more :) thanks for your feedback
Yay Crobat! I've always been fond of the Zubat line, despite how obnoxious they could be in caves. The "Martha" nickname and comment about the Koga mirror match had me laughing a bit. I thought the strategies in this were really fun. It's a shame about sludge bomb, though. Poor Kanto poison types. It makes most poison dual-types worse than if they had just been mono with their other type.
The second Martha evolved into that vibrant purple Crobat I was in love. What a fun playthrough. I'm starting to think it's anything that's weak to ground is at a disadvantage. This upcoming week's video has a Fire type in it and ugh... the pain in the league!!! I couldn't have a bat themed video and NOT poke fun at the DC universe 😅
You're correct! Usually you can't without the National Dex. The Universal Pokémon Randomizer allows this evolution to happen while ignoring that requirement :) But good catch!
i remember when i was playing pokemon ruby and then i remembered that golbat evolves into crobat so i caught one but then i didn’t know how to make friendship higher so i just gave up
Crobat is so so so much better than Golbat! Just hang out with them :) you know, win some battles with them, get them a haircut, feed them some delicious Protein!
You know that is an eggscellent question! Maybe the Sand Attack creates a haze of sand that messes with Zubats echolocation? Am I grasping at straws? :p
I personally find hidden power to be a pain in the ass. My army of meowths seems to like to pick them up often, and I'm sure the pokecenter LOVES getting ahold of them from me.
I find I don't usually get more than 1 one a run. Sometimes I'll get 2, the most I've ever received was 3 in a single run. I've also had 1 run (Magneton) where it just straight up didn't show up.
@@Eggsceptional whereas in my current run, where I am running Dragonair line, Blastoise line, and carrying four meowths...ive come across LITERALLY ten hidden powers. I caught my Dratini in the safari zone at lv. 24 and only ground it to 30. I have done NO other wild grinding with meowths in the party 0 and only literally every trainer battle in Kanto.
@@DoctorKamino It sounds like you're doing significantly more grinding in your run compared to what I do in a typical solo run so that makes sense. 10 copies is a LOT!
I was thinking brave nature is missplay for first e4 round when you have only golbat but you give yourself national dex, idk why i dont think about it when in other runs yours non gen 1 pokemons evolve
It's actually funny using Gen 2/3 Pokémon in the Round 1 E4 you see the Pokémon's Dex number as "???". I don't want to give the National dex before the game gives it naturally. Keep it as close to the vanilla experience as possible :)
Eggcellent, I run a Golbat and Crobat quite often for Gen 3, love it, got to ask, did you consider using Shadow Ball from the Game Corner, I find it helps for the psychics and ghosts?
I can't recall if I gave Shadow Ball the time of day in my consideration of moveset. I'm thinking that I chose not to use it favouring vitamins because the $80k investment would only help in select situations where I was hitting for big damage regardless. In my Duskull run that releases today, Crobat sure reminds me that it can learn Shadow Ball :)
@@Eggsceptional fair enough, makes sense, Shadow Ball is a great move if you can afford it, the neutral damage it does to a lot of fire Red makes it worth having and since its a physical move in Gen 3, very handy for so many
Agreed! My only sticking point is what would I have done with the darn Round 2 Steelixs on Brock's team? I suppose I could have deleted Wing Attack for Steel Wing and then re-taught Aerial Ace after. Hmm. Makes me want to play it again :)
@@Eggsceptional The Steel types of Gen 3 are a pain, I always get stuck on Steelix and Magnimite for most Fire Red runs and tend to run Hidden Power Fire on special attackers and Fighting on Physical attackers just to deal with them, I've noticed you like HP rock for your physical attackers, but on Crobat I'd almost suggest HP fire, its 70 base special attack isn't the worst and you've had giga drain on it so a special move isn't completely out of question for Crobat, maybe even a quiet nature to boost its special attack without lowering the physical might be worth trying. I should say now, poison types are my favourite and Crobat is a fave in most games I play, if I can have it in a run, I have it
@@jptheflipper3825 Interesting.. This is why I'm loving doing these runs and posting this content. I get to keep learning about a game that I've been playing for 20 years. HP Fire would be an interesting one for Crobat I'm trying to mentally figure out the impacts not just for Bruno but the rest of the league(s). I like HP Rock because it lends the most coverage against the most trainers I find but I'm also guilty of falling into strategic ruts where I like what I like. I'll keep Fire in mind :)
I have some tweaks planned for the overlay in the not too distant futute which should allow me to increase it - slightly. It's already pretty crammed for space with some learn sets :) Plus, this Zubat video was using my old overlay!
@@EggsceptionalFor fire red leaf green. You can not get a crobat before getting national dex. When golbat is at maximum friendship and level up before then, it would attempt to evolve but then cancel itself and give a message that it failed to evolve.
