Bottom of the third inning from Progressive Field in Cleveland, OH. You can see the center field camera start to shake a little bit after the 2-1 pitch to Shin-Soo Choo. Then after a hard foul ball, it really starts shaking, and WTAM Indians announcer Tom Hamilton comments about it.
Unfazed, Choo strokes a double to the gap in right field. Later hitting a 3-run home run to win the game in the bottom of the ninth, just a day after the birth of his third child, Abigail.
Go Tribe!
Video is from SportsTime Ohio, audio from WTAM 1100 in Cleveland. Sorry about the audio and video quality.
Did this dude hit a double during an earthquake
Asian dudes take things in stride.
TigerMeadows but asians can't see all the time because of the eyes ya know
joseph rivera now he plays for da rangers and hit a home run last night
In Cleveland the higher you are the more you feel it he probably didn't even notice it
Caedyn Paulson it happened for the whole video idiot
Shin-Soo Choo is the most underrated player in baseball, and not just because he hit a double during an earthquake
He sucks he blows he cringe
Dude he was one of the most overpaid players in baseball his last 7 seasons.
@@timb4248 and of course it was my rangers overpaying as per usual
Who?
All asian athletes are underrated by default, not just him
Shin Soo Choo's OPS during earthquakes is insane. I'm kind of surprised ESPN doesn't have a graphic on this.
Lmfaoooo
***** Holy shit
his name isn't LeBron that's why
WakeRunCollapse I don't get it
Much like the skyscrapers of Japan, Choo has been engineered to "ride out" earthquakes by swaying back and forth. Japan actually teach kids this during earthquake drills
I was at this game with my grandparents and being a 6 year old at the time, it was so weird feeling the earthquake up in the cheap seats. Choo then hitting the walkoff homer later was one of the coolest sports memories I have.
Elijah, doesn't Choo look so young in this video? Our family saw them play the Reds and none of that team is playing for them now. Possibly Bryan Shaw I forget.
Yes he does! Shaw has been around a long time, although I don’t know how much he has left.
One of? If you have a cooler sport memory then please share
Lol nothing can beat my first trip to Fenway! Awesome ballpark, to say the least.
@@elijahconklin1651 I've always wanted to see Fenway
I was at a Ruby Tuesday when this happened. The fucks next to us thought we were shaking their table.
omg XD

Strongest earthquake east of the Rocky Mountains in 60 years, gets a stand up double.
Like a boss
Earthquakes east of the Rockies are felt further away than earthquakes west of the rockies because of less disturbed crust allowing the waves to travel/be felt further away. If you actually calculate it out due to the difference in the crust, this 5.9 in Virginia was about the equivalent of a 7+ in Cali.
Nintenkid91
Its not just the state of the crust but also the material/density. The more dense it is the better it conducts energy and hence the further the quake will travel. This quake was felt as far as Cananda. 7+ in Cali tho? The 1989 7.0 quake collapsed roads and ruptured gas lines.. This one shook my light shades..
Nintenkid91 not true- the 5.9 quake did not have any where near the shaking intensity of a 7.0 . that 5.9 was not in any way a big quake. - I was in the 1994 6.7 Northridge quake-that was a violent quake; the quake back east was a moderate after shock by comparison. many things affect the shaking intensity of any particular quake- the depth of the fracture, soil type, the type of fault; strike / slip, blind thrust, subduction zone etc. The East coast had a moderate earthquake, thats all.
kseries1981 we don't get earthquakes up here dummy

"This broadcast booth continues to shake back and forth"
"I have no idea what's going on"
Yeah it's probably a nuclear bomb
+Jeremy Daugherty (strim355z) They were not their so they could not feel it
+GD Xstep (strim355z) well to be fair we almost never get earthquakes in ohio
did they ever confirm that's what it was (being a California native, I'm 95% sure it was an earthquake but you never know (I've heard of instssnces where shaking feels like a quake only to find out it was something else.
Danny Eyheralde yes it was, it only lasted a few seconds, and it was caused by fracking
Das Re although for these broadcasters, those few seconds must've felt like an eternity
I like how the commentators are just so chill about it like nothing ever happened
Because it’s unexpected and doesn’t feel like much honestly.
They're not nearly as violent as you'd assume, given how much damage they used to cause. But building codes are different now, they rarely cause damage to anything but sidewalks anymore. I think the most interesting thing about an earthquake is, just a fraction of a second before it hits, you can feel the air pressure change. Just long enough for you to think "oh I feel weird" and then you feel the shaking start 😂
No...they were kinda freakin out. Don't know WTF you were watching.
Sounded nervous to me, talking about the press box shaking 😬 😳
It wasn't an earthquake it was just my ex jogging
OOOOOOOOHHHHHHH!
That's brutal man
I though it was my mother-in-law
Jokes on you you dated her

Sounds like Tom Hamilton is broadcasting from my bathroom.

In fact, there is a fault line under Lake Erie that may or may not be continuous with the one that goes through Virginia. While they felt this earthquake on 8-23-11 in downtown Cleveland (that was right under Mineral, VA), we even had a stronger one felt in southern Michigan back in 1986. That one even opened up a couple of new drainage channels under the road I live on only about two to three miles away from my house!
I live bout 60 miles from Cleveland and remember it. Wasn't huge but it was noticeable.
***** Wasnt aware you had a degree in seismology. Your immature name calling really shows ur ignorance. Grow up.
***** "Your" refers to you. "You're" is a contraction for "you are". Make sure the next time you want to correct someone's grammar that you at least do it properly.
***** Its been quite entertaining on my end as well. Warmest regards.
+Donna Gilhousen it makes sense tho "well now you are aware" that really does make sense

Shin-Soo Choo: the only player in MLB history to record a base hit during an earthquake.
This was the magnitude 5.8 earthquake whose epicenter was in Virginia; it occurred at 1:51 pm local time August 23, 2011. It was felt in twelve US states (including Ohio) and five Canadian provinces. Damage estimates ranged from 200 million to 300 million, and several minor injuries occurred near the epicenter (particularly in the town of Mineral, Virginia, where two buildings collapsed).
I'm surprised I didn't feel it in lower Michigan
I live in Virginia and remember it well.
I was sitting in the chair in a barber shop and watched mirrors flex. The west coast poked fun at a 5.8, not understanding that buildings here aren’t designed that way. This nearly brought down the Washington Monument.
Camera did not move.
Yep. I thought it was this earthquake. I live in PG County, MD. It was the second day of the school year for us and we were about to leave within the hour when it hit. At first I thought it was one of the kids shaking the table, but the whole damn room shook at the same time. Nobody was hurt, but I made a good friend that day who made the situation funny. Crazy how 2011 feels so long ago.
How the heck did Shin Soo choo get a hit in this situation? IT WAS LITERALLY SHAKING.
If you're up high (like in the pressbox) or using a camera with a long lens (like the TV cameras have), it magnifies the shaking. You'll notice that none of the players appear to be affected.
I live in Ohio. We have a earthquake line fault underneath our lake but nothing bad can happen here like in or Japan or California per se Ohio' in top five safest places to live in the world to live far as natural catastrophes

“I don’t know what’s going on” When your not from California

To be fair, I don’t think people from California expect to deal with earthquakes when they’re in Cleveland.
@@kwakerjak exactly
So true...
@@kwakerjak but if your Californian your not gonna be like I don’t know what’s going on if you did feel one in Cleveland
I’d know what it feels like here in South Carolina the earth shakes
My friend who was a geologist and I were sitting in the third floor of building 510 at Norfolk Naval Shipyard when he was on the phone with an engineer, and calmly expressed that he thought we were having an earthquake! He then told me the day afterwards that earthquakes on the East Coast are felt over a broader area primarily due to the solid shale aspects of the deep layers of rock. Not like the sandy layers of the West Coast, where the energy dissipates over a smaller region. When the bedrock is shale, and a fault lets loose, it is felt as far as the bedrock goes, in all directions! So those in Cleveland felt it pretty much just like we did in the Tidewater area of Virginia…a 5.8 or 5.9 Richter scale kind of feeling!
Throwback to when there was no Indians fans.
lol
There were Indians fans back then.
I will say we have a lot more now.
brownsfan64 Well not much now after the blown 3-1 and 2-0 lead to CHC/NYY 😆
Always Indians fans, we just can't afford tickets!
I love how the commentators are just like:
“uhh it’s shaking pretty bad up here, but that was a great double! And uhhh yeah, did I mention we are about to die up here?”
Choo hit a double during an earthquake. I remember that quake. That was the East Coast quake. Felt it all the way in South Carolina.
Nope, he didn't hit it during the earthquake, that hit CAUSED the earthquake
PlatinumPuncher thats the same joke i made when i was at the game lol they were filming the avengers downtown at that time also :)
Greg Gibson the home plate umpire motioning to the earthquake. And the earthquake are now celebrating in their dugout
This was actually the same quake that shook Washington D.C in the days prior to Hurricane Irene. The quake was between a 5 and 6 on the Richter scale, so given the distance away from the epicenter, the quake wasn't felt as strongly in Cleveland.
Shortly after this, Mike Hegan astutely noted that this was an earthquake. I was listening to the game on the radio in a high-rise apartment, and I felt it.
I was working on the 4th level of the (empty, mid afternoon) Quicken Loans Arena right across the street from this game. It set off fire alarms and we went outside. As it turns out, our Eastern US earthquakes are much different than the violent ones in other places. It was like a slow, rocking back and forth like on a boat, you feel seasick but there wasnt much destruction at all. Ladles that hung on a kitchen wall were swaying back and forth before your eyes. You feel it more higher up (like this announcer did in the press box), and barely feel it at all when your feet are on ground level. It also proved to us that the fire alarms, which alerted in an empty arena with no fans, are obviously turned off in the crowded baseball park to avoid panic.
Ok umm so this game was in Cleveland and how were you working there if no teams are playing I'm 13 so I don't know much about the working world but that is interesting about the fire alarms!! So a. Earthquake feels like getting seasick here ok good to know that's way if we sever have one again I will know what the heck is going on!!!
I've never experienced an earthquake but I live near cleveland
the stadium/arena has workers in the place doing a variety of things like cleaning, preparing for the event, etc. (ex: switching from a hockey rink to a basketball court)
@@mustafajafri8806 I experienced an earthquake in Columbus, OH in July of 1980 while attending a convention.
LOL!!! I was in Columbia,MD at work when that earthquake hit!!! And you could feel it in Maryland!!!!
Gee the earth is quaking, I wonder what's going on?
Slicer Vorzakh earthquakes suck...in my country we get them often..well sometimes :(
Ohio has never really experienced a true earthquake so you tell me what's going on here if you're from the state
LOL Good one.
😂
I like how the commentator is freaking out and the game is going on as if nothing is happening LMFAO
the broadcasters handled it well, and the batter had an earthquake help him on the double lol
I remember that day. I live in NY and went to the Yankees/A's game that night. Before I left, I was taking a nap and woke up because my room was shaking. Got to Yankee Stadium to meet my friend, and before the game, people were talking about it. Like these broadcasters, I had no clue what was happening!
Reminds me of the '89 World Series....
Brad on a millionth the scale lmao
Cept that it wasn't that huge
Yup. I remember seeing that one...
Yeah, not even close
Sounds like they're in the conference room of a Holiday Inn or something.
Shin Soo Choo has the highest BA, OPS, SLUG, OBP during an earthquake. And the most doubles (1) and hits (1)
🤣
Lol, you can see the camera jiggle before they say anything. I'm in So Cal and worked for the Angels farm league many years ago. One night we had an earthquake in the 4. area. Eveyone got quiet, then you could hear a....woooowah from the crowd. The bleachers metal frame was creaking.
thats was the only thing at the game that i noticed too.heard the frame creaking like a train hitting its breaks on a rr track, but didnt feel any rumbling or shaking.
This earthquake was just signed by the Houston Astros. Literally just gave this dude a sign to swing and hit a clean double.
Is Ohio even by a fault line?
No, the earthquakes are caused by fracking.
yes a very small one
+Wolfpack 360 I remember feeling very dizzy when this happend
+nibiyabi There's no proof fracking causes earthquakes; earthquakes are caused by tectonic plates.
Ignore the knucklehead who says fracking causes earthquakes. This Earthquake's epicenter was in Mineral, Virginia. At the time I lived in Pennsylvania and was at my psychiatrists when it happened in Hershey. Now I say ignore the guy who said fracking causes them because as fate would have it, I now live near Mineral, Virginia and there is no fracking anywhere around here. In fact the town of Mineral is on top of a fault line.

is my favorite part of the video
This was a mag 4.0, not enough to damage anything, but I easily felt it in my 5th floor apartment. That's the 2nd quake that I've felt in the Cleveland area. The other was a 5.5 in 1986. Pretty much everybody felt that one, even at ground level.
I had a house made of sticks
wow this dood hit a stand up double during an earthquake
Now that annoncer knows what a eathquake keels like !! lol
i love how he keeps talking about the game and is also scared
Tom Hamilton is a true professional.
I always admired Choo’s demeanor. He was always so calm and collected. Even when he was hitting during an earthquake. I miss him here in TX.
Is Choo's nickname "Earthquake", cause that's the only hit I could see.
This was the East Coast Earthquake centered in VA. Felt in the Cleveland area, we've had some earthquakes before. Chardon in 86 was the strongest centered in NEOH Ashtabula County has minor quakes but still very rare thing to happen in Cleveland.
I was at that game I was about 11 rows up from the field on the third Baseline I didn't feel a thing. But me and my wife notice everybody from the upper deck starting to run down we had no clue what was going on until after the game we saw the news..
They opened up the expensive seats.
On this day I was in school and I felt something wierd, but I just didn't think anything of it really, and then I get home to watch the Indians game highlights and they show this,.

I was at this game!! CHOO later hit a walk off HR! I was in the upper deck and it was no joke how much the stadium was swaying. My father-in-law and I quickly descended the stairs and as soon as we got into the tunnel, it stopped. Lasted what seemed to be about a minute or longer.
I was actually five of the time of this game I don't even remember it, I just found it on TH-cam now!
Why has MLB The Show STILL not added this in the game??? You mean to tell me that after 20 years in my franchise I still haven't gotten an earthquake game, or even a simple rain delay?
The Nine Club Bookie We are talking about REALISM. This is something MLB The Show continues to neglect, and it is really making me angry. I just won’t buy it until they have this feature. Simple as that.
