Bending Guitar sides by hand

- In this video you see me jointing the back, dimensioning the sides and above all bending the sides by hand on a bending iron.
It takes me about 12 minutes to bend a side and fit it into the mold.
Filmed with my Zoom Q8.

I may have watched this video a dozen times. I made a jig almost just like yours and just bent my very first side. The smell was really great! I felt surprisingly confident. It just have been from watching you work. Thanks very much for sharing your skill.

What a great video, a Master Craftsman in his shop ... How someone can take blocks and strips of wood and shape in this way is awesome .... Don’t let the material command you, you command the material 👍. A tree and Mr. Kuijk walk into a bar, only Mr. Kuijk and fine guitar walk out ...

Just to add my praise to those comments already posted - the table surrounding the iron is a brilliant way to control the side bends. Also just watched Chuck Morrison’s YT video with his iron projecting horizontally from the bench. You have inspired me to build a jig that combines both concepts 😁
Brilliant clamping method! I am more of a furniture/ cabinet builder and I have never seen this method before.
Ad van Kuijk- This is a great lesson on bending sides and some fine points along the way. Seeing it done right will save me lots of time and mistakes I don’t need to make. I’ll be working with African Blackwood. It has to be right! Thanks a bunch.

I can make and sharpen a scraper. But, I can not make a guitar..... Yet.

Love the table and how it helps ensure 90 degree bends. Also using the side molds at the end to refine.
Ziet er goed uit ad! Ik ben bezig om mijn eigen uke te bouwen maar ik heb weinig goed gereedschap. Het hout wat ik gebruik is pallethout (vrij poreus door droogte) het zal niet zo mooi klinken als een uke van €1000,- maar ik hoop er toch muziek uit te krijgen haha. Fijn weekend!

I noticed that the guitar shape drawing when the two top sides are glued together are not perfectly aligned, does it matter? How do you fix that? 24:48
the wood is between 4 and 5 mm thick, so there is enough room for correction! I do that with planes, scrapers and sandpaper 150 220 grit
I enjoyed watching the whole process! I will be building a guitar soon and have been pondering how to make sure that I don’t bend the sides at an angle. Your table addition to the bending iron is great! Is that a wax pencil you are using when you mark on the wood where the corrections need to be made?

I only use a simple Stanley blockplane, 18 cm long and 5 cm wide. I don't know the exact type number as I have it for more than 25 years!
It looks like a Stanley (or Record) for the jointing too...number 7 maybe?

Hi Michelle, thanks for your compliment. I do'nt remember where I bought the rosewood. It's been in my shop for many years. I think I handpicked it in Antwerp in a luthery shop called Pro Arte.

Im also a guitar-maker , but I had been facing some problem.
When I removing the more of thickness on rosewood,the wood will scratched up.
The angle of the blade I using for is 40°.
What is the degree(the angle of blade) you using for?
I use a Stanley blockplane with a 21 degree angle. Maybe your plane is not sharp enough. Rosewood will make a blade dull within minutes; you have to keep your blade razor sharp.

And about jointing wood by hand - yes you have control, and it is super silent and super meditative but the question is time :)
So do normally just hand plane? Or do you use power planer/jointer?

the longer the better. I keep them in the mold till I use them! Good luck!

Do all woods react the same
no Pete, some are easy to bend and others more difficult.
@@advankuijk Do you have any experience with bending Merbau? How easy is it?
That's the step I missed at around 3:40. Heat the wood up and rub the side with swiss cheese.

Thank you Steve. the bending iron is from Stewmac (Stewart Mcdonald) in the USA and can be used for all bending work!
hey zomaar een gedachte he, gedurende het buigen, koel je dat metaal dan niet af, doordat je er eigenlijk steeds water op doet? Voor mij lijkt het gedurende het buigen dat het steeds minder makkelijk buigt. net alsof je je hem wat langer weer moet laten opwarmen?
in het buigijzer zit een thermostaat die de temperatuur constant houdt. Het buigen gaat gaandeweg steeds langzamer omdat de marges van correctie steeds kleiner worden, dus je gaat steeds nauwkeuriger werken. Groeten

Ad van Kuijk I am thinking to buy cumpiano which cost 1/3 of courtnall. How does it differ from your method? You also good at composing. Thank you so much for videos and reply.
cumpiano is a good book too, but coutnnall has plans of all the great builders inside the book, like Torres, Fleta, Hauser etc. His book is very easy to follow.

Courtnall is the easy book and with exceleent plans; buy it! You won't regret it.
Sanding after the shooting board? And all that wobbling while sanding? Not sure whats going on there. I thought the whole point of the shooting board was to get the joint right in the first place.
You're right about the shooting board. But sometimes you keep seeing some light thru the joint. That's when I sand a few strokes. It has always helped closing the joint. I've never had a failing joint in almost 30 years. It's my way and it works for me!

There is 0 gained by not using a thickness sander. Ok after another five minutes of watching it has become obvious that you put way to much effort into this. My hats off to you for using rudimentary methods but for me ......I haven't got the time.

This one really made me laugh, "bending sides like they've done for centuries". Can someone tell me if they used 110 or 220 volt bending irons centuries ago? LOL
That doesn't mean people didn't had Iron before. Ever heard of coal as a source to heat iron? Google it.

bending sides by hand is how they have done it for centuries, using a heated pipe.

Overall I like the video but you could easily edit it down and skip the amount of footage for each stage. I skipped through it and in one minute saw the most important info from each step. No reason for it to be 25 minutes long unless people have never done this before. Don't get me wrong, nice video, but would benefit from editing in my opinion and I say that as a guitar builder AND video producer.
