In Everett's case, he should have just said well send me the bills you say you need paid (including the hospital bill) and I'll see what I can do. The scam would have been exposed easily enough at that point.
I have a niece who wanted money for college. We offered to write the check directly to the college, but needed all the info. Oddly, never heard anything back. 🤔

They try to gain your trust and get close to you through texting or instant messaging over a period of weeks, and then spring some emergency on you, requesting lots of money. They tug on your heartstrings and help you feel sympathetic. The bad scammers will try that after only one conversation, but the good ones can lead you on for months and really make you feel like you've developed a connection.

It's never a great idea to do it, and it didn't help her more because there was the highest chance his actual mom is alive and they finally met up and talked everything over like adults. "Fraud involves using a lie, deception, falsehood, or dishonesty in an attempt to gain a benefit." In this particular case, it's wire fraud, because it involved using electronic communication. If it were done via snail mail, it would be letter fraud. The interesting thing about both wire fraud and mail fraud is that in the US, both are Federal crimes.

But, luckily for him, he still didn't trust his ex-wife because she had essentially scammed him before. So he decided to check the situation out and, hey, whaddaya know... Great story, although the deux ex machina of the real mother dying and her lawyer contacting Everett just before the con went down is a bit much...
