@@derekthwaytes4689 Thanks. We just put up a club DStar repeater but it is a stand alone for right now but getting it with just 10w from my house to about 15 miles away in the mountains. We’ll see if we get to network it. Ham-Solo K0FYR
Gosh what a great Audio Sound coming out of that sneaky lil IC-705. That onboard Speaker performs awsome! Well what can I just say? It's iCOM as we know them. Happy Thanksgiving Mike & tnx for the Video. 73 de YFUG 💯👍🙋♂
Hi i see you have some hand helds. Can you recommend an antenna for my kenwood thd74? Im on the edge of reception from the local repeater and dont want to loose tri band capabilities. Thanks
🤔 Don't even need a radio now? Looks like to me that being proficient at RADIO operations is so much better so when the Grid goes down (And It Will) let them just play these internet Games!
@@barntt We actually just set up our own club stand alone DStar repeater in our area that’s not hooked to the internet. We have a system of repeaters that are all either solar or generator operated interconnected and separate from the internet as well as great HF propagation here so communications won’t be bad even with the grid down. I wish every where was like that as I travel but after activating almost every state for Parks and Summits on the air I can definitely say they are not. Ham-Solo K0FYR
@@Ham-Solo Nice! I have been off air for a few years and playing catch up!. Trying to wrap my head around it. LOTS to learn and nobody local to learn from. Thanks
@@barntt No problem. That’s currently my only DStar video and probably should do another one soon but several projects are before that. Have some DMR videos in the old line up as well if interested. Glad to help. Ham-Solo K0FYR
I’m worried that some of these modes will be difficult enough to keep hams off the air with vhf/uhf. I have a hard time following it. Kinda grasped dmr and got a radio I.D. But started this inner battle in my mind, “So now you’re on the internet for communication. Your just doing it the hard way”. But that’s just me. Hihi de n5vwn
I agree with the difficult part. DMR is even more confusing with the programming. Luckily we have a fairly robust DMR system here in Colorado. They are all RF towers and they use microwave links to connect to each other so an HT can pretty much hit any one of the 33 towers going from Wyoming all the way down to New Mexico and Arizona. None of that system is on the internet so I use that more than say the Brandmeister talk groups or DSTAR. Ham-Solo K0FYR
I agree. I understand digital as a mode in either simplex or through a repeater, but once the Internet is involved the radio becomes unnecessary and pointless. I’ve watched a bunch of these so-called beginner and demystifying videos and I still don’t understand a darn thing. No one ever bothers to explain what a hotspot is or a reflector or what the purpose of all this is anyway. It all seems unnecessarily complicated for very little benefit. Unless I’m missing the point and I really wish somebody would explain the point of it. I better stop because I feel a rant coming on.
Thank you for a simple and clear use of Dstar, I have pi zero 2w, running off my 2820 icom... thank you

I purchased the 42.5” tri-band & the 15.1” AR-771 Abbree folding antennas and they’re ok and inexpensive. Ham-Solo K0FYR
