He just suffered from not playing a single position enough. He started 53 games in LF, 57 in RF, and 34 in CF, and the GG winners all played almost exclusively one position. If they don't shuffle him around so much next season, he's got to be a GG lock.
MLB has rules to protect players who are first called up mid-season. If a player is called up mid-season and plays in fewer than 45 games and has fewer than 130 at bats, he still qualifies as a rookie his next season. Carroll only played in 32 games with 104 at bats in 2022, so 2023 counted as his rookie season.
