    Awesome video. I’ve mentioned several times that Indians dealer network is the only reason H-D doesn’t have to worry today. HD better pay attention, though, cuz Indian is coming fast and strong.

      @GearsGadgets  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks John. I REALLY hope HD accelerates whatever plan they have for the future of the Touring bikes because I think letting Indian get a 2 year jump with all the bells and whistles on the Challenger is a dangerous proposition. I know HD has the big piece of the pie but the longer they let Indian keep nibbling out a bigger chunk the more the discussion will start to sway in Indians favor. That is not a healthy position to be in for the motor company in 2021-22. I want Harley to swing for the fences with a touring product and try to make Indian look foolish with more than just a stern "Hey, you copied us"

      @@GearsGadgets Indian just makes a better product. The dealership network will catch up. Just look at the 37% increase in sales for Indian this year, versus another record loss for Harley. Time to stop throwing shade on the other American motorcycle company because Harleys are inferior now in tech, powertrain, and just equal in name heritage.

    I live in the burbs of Chicago. Just looking at dropping and picking up for service. Needing someone to give me a ride.
    One dealer 15min from home, 2 at 30 min from home with Harley. Now look at Indian, over an hour away for the closest dealer. It makes a big difference when fitting in life.

      Lol true!! Although if your bike is broke that’s a different story.

    • @steveawesome9538
      @steveawesome9538 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, it's pretty tolerable to have to drive or ride 2 hours to a dealership just to look at a new motorcycle. Which then if you need parts or supplies you need to devote what will turn into an entire day to go get said parts or supplies. Same if you're planning on having the dealership service the bike. Then let's say you decide to buy a new bike, so it takes 2 hours to get to the dealership, God knows how long for the actual sales process, then 2 hours to ride home. I honestly wouldn't worry too much about a breakdown. If it's going to break, it's going to break, worry about it then. Besides, it's going to break after 4pm on a Saturday or sometime on a Sunday. Which is great, because a lot of HD dealers are open on Sunday for service. And honestly, I pretty much don't even ride mine unless we're going on some multi day motorcycle trip ie Rolling Thunder, The 105th Anniversary, we've got a trip planned for Yellowstone, etc. I work 50-60 hours a week and going to bike night is stupid, I'm not bothering to get the bike out of the garage unless I plan on being on it all day. So, Live to Ride is one thing, but if you have to spend an entire day just to go to and from the dealership to look at a new bike, that's another thing altogether. Which is why there is about 10 Harley's to 1 Indian out on the road currently. That number will probably pick up, but it'll take some time considering the the dealership network is at minimum 3-1 in Harley's favor.

    • @TheTripleDubya
      @TheTripleDubya 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Too true ! Love it, I rode 4.5hrs back to the dealer for my first service, I made a two day trip of it and it was awesome.
      Later I found a place (not a dealer) that had a good reputation for servicing and building bikes that was only an hours ride. Much better.
      I sure as hell would not buy another touring chassis HD, I’d ride even further for an Indian because after the service I’ve got to enjoy the ride the rest of the time! Rode the Indian, was blown away, yes it really is that good.

    The issue with Indian/Polaris is the dealer network is fragmented with Mom and Pop lawnmower shops that also sell side by sides and snow mobiles and maybe have an Indian on the showroom floor. No way the tech or parts departments are as well trained and stocked as the Harley Davidson dealers. Now I know Indian is really been trying to fix this, however I feel they really have a long way to go. Personally I like walking into a dealer and all they sell, service and have people who are Harley, then an Indian dealer who sells and services Kawasaki, Triumph, Yamaha, Polaris OHHHHH and Indians over there in the middle of the room! Nope not for me sorry!

    I live in Australia where Harley dealerships vs Indian dealerships is more pronounced. With the consistent number of Harley dealerships in a small location, if I breakdown on a trip and need parts, one of the Harley shops may have a part that can be shipped quickly to the repair shop where my bike is but does not have my broken replacement. That means I can have a part sent from across town in a short time, have my broken item replaced and be back on the road quickly. With an Indian motorcycle, I may need to book accommodation and waste time while waiting for a delivery from another Indian repair shop if the one repairing my motorcycle doesn't have a replacement part. Therefore, having more Harley dealerships, even if close to one another, has benefits when riding across the country or interstate.

    The one problem with Indian dealerships is, all the ones near me( Detroit Mi) aren't just Indian. For example my brother had a problem with his roadmaster. He called the Honda/Indina dealer and was told they only have 1 Indina tech and it would be 3 weeks until they could look at it. If he had a honda they could have gotten to it in a day or 2. Until they change to Indian only dealerships this will be a issue.

None of my harleys have left me stranded. People should ride what they like and not act like what they don't like is crap. Indian or harley neither have the best cc or the newest technology BMW, honda and others have much better when comes to just about any category in riding so it's like arguing over what's the best 4th place lol. "Popping a dealership" is a tough, risky business ... especially for Indian. That said, one thing I have seen across the country is that Indian dealerships are smaller, their repair facilities are smaller. Their mechanics are often times busy with other brands that include three and four wheelers. Their business hours are almost always more similar to Japanese/European shops. That means they are much more likely to be flippin' CLOSED on Saturday afternoons and Sundays. THAT'S what I mean by customer service.

    It was brought to my attention that I originally missed 4 Indian Dealerships. Savannah GA, Greer SC, Greensboro, NC, and Ocala FL. I have since added them to the map. Let me know if you see any others I have missed. Updated Count: 188 Indian Dealerships, 683 Harley-Davidson Dealerships. It was really unfortunate but predictable that I would have used one that I missed of an example of one that is needed lol. Murphys Law.

    on my paris trip... although it was extended a lot ... 3 weeks.... i had two failures.... first was a keycap on my turn signal came off.... i stopped in Illinois, Kentucky, and Texas and none of them had the black ones or extended ones (all had chrome ones).... and all were like (none in the state/reasonable area to get) but it didnt stop me from proceeding.. however in Texas i had a rim failure...stock rim... not available anywhere in near area (even though I had the loss 7 miles from a dealer) ... so I'm not sure how helpful it really is.... now on the flip side, you mention the orlando excess... and sadly, even here in Miami we have 4ish in our area, and we have some pretty impressive wait times for service... especially near bike week, biketober, and starting about this time of year as the snowbirds come down.... almost every saturday my closest dealership is mobbed ... virtually no parking.. so i think its absolutely necessary ... even my break down in Texas.... was very early morning, got into the dealership around 10 am..... and while it did take an hour to get a similar rim in from another dealer... my bike came out 15 minutes AFTER closing (6:15pm) with me waiting on it... and they had 20 bikes come in and out in that time.... with them knowing I needed to make Mississippi that night (didn't happen) ... used to be travelers got priority, but yeah... as for channels, i don't watch many moto channels anymore.. used to be really active 6+ years ago before I moved south... but most of those motovlogers are .. not vlogging much anymore... but obviously Maxwell.... Adam is interesting, but content is a little all over the place for me.... do watch Bike-n-bird builds... blockhead at times... but really.. in the motorcycle sphere.. Rokkit44 is still one of my favorites ...

    The network is growing. For a while there was only one dealer in all of British Columbia, Canada. As of this year two more opened up. Now. Granted California alone has more population than all of Canada I’m not surprised we don’t have more. But if Indian keeps up the good work I can see the popularity growing as well as the dealer network. I know when I made my video about the 10 things I hated about the scout bobber dealer network was one of them. Got a lot of flack for that video. Some people just can’t handle a bit of constructive criticism.
    Oh well. Love the bobber. Can’t wait to see what the challenger brings. And what new models they will bring out that feature the power plus!

I have verified the state of Georgia on my map and I have all 3 dealers they list on the website.

      @@GearsGadgets I understand, you can only do what you can do. As far as the dealerships in North Georgia, I only see two on the map (I may be wrong with the map zoomed). But there are three, Indian of Marietta, Atlanta Hwy Indian Dealership, and Mall of Georgia Indian. You map is missing the Atlanta Hwy Indian Dealership, (5960 Atlanta Hwy, Alpharetta, GA 30004). Great map though, maybe a crowd sourcing can fill in the gaps and Indian can come to you to get a better map, as they are obviously having trouble keeping their map up to date. Great video -unique! A new dealership takes a lot of $. Even if adding Indian to an existing shop. They need someone willing to pay those costs (franchise fee, special flooring, fixtures, lighting & furniture). Complaint I hear is that not all dealers give good repair service. I have a great dealer. Victory had a great # of dealers as I toured. I hope Indian will continue to grow. BMW is who I think is lacking dealers. I carry AAA that covers any type of vehicle I drive + what my insurance roadside covers. If my bike could not get repaired I'm prepared to rent a small uhaul truck and carry it home. I've never been stranded with any of my bikes & I've been touring since 1990. I hope my luck continues. I'm also good on keeping up with my maintenance.

    Concerning saturation, a city or town can get over saturated quickly but overtime a market will only handle a saturation level that is sustainable. So while u say it's over saturation. I think it's the right amount because the other HD stores would have & probably have closed down by now and also this drives the HD places to be at a better price for their bikes compared to Indian. Also, I honestly like having 4 HD dealerships within an hour. The closest Indian store is over an 1 1/2 away. So I wouldnt want to go to the bike night after work or just to stop on the way home to see what shirt/gear they have in stock. The only time I could go support the dealership is when i have half a day free and life just doesnt work like that all the time with family commitments. Plainly put, it's a huge benefit to having stores within ur living area and its a benefit that most people want. In this situation and across the nation concerning HD dealership compared to that of Indian, the saying that more options is better is true.

    one of the reasons I stick with Harley is the dealer network. I asked this question to an Indian salesperson and he told me they had 103 dealerships. I guess he was off a little. I did buy a Yamaha and found the customer service sucked. Maybe this is only in Las Vegas. I have been to many Harley dealerships and found the service is great and I've needed my bike repaired at some dealerships and was always taken in and back on the road very quickly. This includes them taking new parts off a new bike on the floor because they didn't have my part in stock. I do like Indian and maybe someday will give them a try. Thanks for the video

    Interesting information! I also wondered how much of a network Indian had and I know! Thanks! I know if I were thinking about buying an Indian dealer support would be a big factor. I think when it comes to the over saturated H-D dealerships if the area couldn’t support the dealerships they would have gone out of business. Here in Tucson we’re lucky enough to have 2 dealers, Eastside and Westside so we have great coverage. I’m fortunate enough to live 5 minutes from one!

    I think you'll find many more over the next few years. Another powersports dealer took up Indian here in Ontario just this past month. They were my Victory dealer when I purchased mine but also sold Ducati, suzuki yamaha KTM etc. I imagine it's an easy thing to put up a sign at existing powersports dealerships and dedicate some floor space to another brand if they don't conflict with sales and the floor space is available. We now have 2 in Southern Ontario. 1 is an hour ride away this one about 1 1/2. Not ideal considering HD is about 30 min away and every major city/town/Burgh seems to have one. Still it's not impossible to get your bike an hours drive away.

      Yeah I agree, an hour isn't the worst thing in the world.

    Good video. I've test-ridden Indians and currently own two Harleys. Interestingly, I take my Harleys to the Indian shop for service (he's really an independent shop that now sells Indians but he also has the largest used Harley selection in town, even more than the HD dealership, and is totally well-schooled on HD products). I've been impressed with Polaris and what it has done thus far with Indian. Give Polaris credit for starting Victory and yes, ending Victory, when it did and kudos to Polaris for revising Indian and putting out a hell of a product. And a 'dirty thumbs up' for HD for coming out with new products like LiveWire, Pan America, Streetfighter, etc. now and in the coming year. These two companies are now blending the best of tradition and innovation, something the Europeans and Japanese have been doing for years. It's time the Americans catch up!

    I live south east Qld in Australia and Brisbane, sunshine and Gold Coast there are 4 HD dealership 3 of them owned by the same business just called different names and 1 independent dealer where Indian has 1 dealership in the same region. Even take into account Toowoomba to the west there another HD dealership there too. Same thing just different geography. But I don’t get pressure selled at an Indian dealership like a HD dealership.

    On 2nd Victory! Flat tires basically 98% of time! Mine don't seem to break down much!

      Was thinking that was conveyed wrong, sorry! Out of 400,000 miles on Victory on the road 2 flats, and a broken drive belt ( which can be replaced in 45 mins) there that's the truth!!!

    Great video one more video topic to squash the Indian haters! Watch Smoaks,Maxwell,Blockhead,Adam and just dropped Laidlaw because of his latest hate video. I only watch those that love riding and all bikes! His attitudes towards other brands is why I got rid of my Harley not into the love affair of a brand I just love to ride!

      Awe Joe don’t drop Laidlaw he’s a good dude, give him one more chance lol. For real though I think he had some valid points and it’s interesting to hear the world through a Harley salesman. I appreciate that he is open and honest about his Harley fanboy position. I watch the rest of those guys and they are great.

    I have a dealership 6 miles from my house, if it was 3 miles from my house that would be better for me. I don’t understand some of your thinking.

    • @GearsGadgets
      @GearsGadgets  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      My point isn’t closeness to your house for daily motorcycle ownership. My video was more or less a reply to the “If you buy an Indian, good luck ever finding a dealer around to work on it” comment I see so frequently.

    After seeing this video on Indian / Harley dealerships for sales and service, I'm going to have to look at the number of say Honda dealerships compared with Harley. With Honda having the Goldwing as their touring flagship I'm now curious about any disparity between Harley n Honda.

      Yeah it would be interesting to map them all but I don’t have that kind of time lol.

    And who needs 12 service centers in one spot? HD service centers are densely populated and over redundantly placed. While Indians numbers are fewer they are more strategically placed ...obviously with some room for growth. But to use that as your decision maker to buy HD to me is sheepish. My decision to buy Indian was because you get more bike for less money and it’s better better made then HD. So in essence breakdowns are not in the forefront of an Indian buyer so much as a Harley. That’s kinda like saying...oh shit this thing is gonna breakdown so much I better make sure service centers are all over. Not exactly prudent thought.

    Minneapolis Metal Church/Matt Laidlaw/John Maxwell/Blockhead/ the ornery one/Shade Tree Surgeon/McRider/Jay Leno/El Guapo/D Cycle and others.
    Great research. There are more Indian dealers that are part of mutidealers. Meaning they do multiple brands. Doesn't mean they service.
    Enjoy your content!

    Hummmmm a more interesting comparison to me would be make, production numbers, then dealership locations. Harley is obvious but others like Indian, BMW, Honda etc might be shocking...LOL! Yep winters do matter as I live up north and motorcycle anything dies October - March.

      Yeah Sam I get it, I am originally from Buffalo, NY and everyone just put their bikes in Hibernation mode until March.
