    I use a Pi4 for my ham gear for ft8 etc and am looking for the performance boost with the 5. Watching rpilocater for a 5 with 8gb - not needed but future proofing. Also, I agree with wanting 12v for power so I use a buck converter to power the Pi. Yes, have to buy one with more amps for this new pi.
    My Windows system is a Beelink for when I need Windows - when I need to run a CPS when Chirp doesn't have support. Beelink has been a great little computer for me. A Macbook is my daily driver.
    Next up, will be looking for your RV channel. 🙂

    Awesome video! btw, I have one of those BeeLink Mini-PC and I think its pretty good. I'm running windows on it atm with SDR++, gnuradio and some other stuff. I also have a AceMagician model, that I run Ubuntu on and I like it as well. Looking forward to getting a raspberry 5, and the evolve laptop. Thanks for the great content.

    Great comparison. I just got the 8 gig with the fan/case, power supply, and the 32 gig sd card w/ bookworm for $136 tax and shipping from Chicago Electric. I look forward to getting it fired up.

    one of the things i mean to try is using the btrfs filesystem with zstd compression instead of the default ext4. the SD card as you point out caps at 4MBs, but if the files are compressed at a 4:1 ratio, this means your writes will be 400% faster and your reads 1600% faster. Or 16MBs writes with 64MBs reads.

    • @ZiggleFingers
      @ZiggleFingers 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@temporarilyoffline yes I used it - good times! btrfs with compression is the default install in fedora workstation. I haven't been able to see if their raspberry image uses it by default yet or not just to test how much snappier the desktop experience would be. but I am intrigued!

    @alanb76 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

    The SD card holds system performance back. Move to faster storage. The Pi5 is really optimized for moving data around, but slow devices don't show much of it's capability.

    That is interesting about the xenon flash. That tells me they have a clock problem on the board. That could be a bad thing at some frequencies that impact what you can run on it. Interesting.🤔 I wish they would release their EMC results. Maybe that is one of the problems that is effecting their supply chain.

    • @temporarilyoffline
      @temporarilyoffline  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The EMC data will probably be found soon. Yeah, the flash issue is interesting for sure.

    What is read during the read test? A few hundred per sec seems slow. Is a "read" reading the whole set of files, so reads/sec is pulling many GBs? So, not slow?

    • @temporarilyoffline
      @temporarilyoffline  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I'm not sure of exactly how Sysbench runs the test (I don't read manuals :-D ) but I did use a slow SD card. The 5 definitely has some speed improvements over the 4 and a faster SD card will be a big help. The problem is that the fast SD cards cost almost as much as the Pi5 does!
