  • A hometown crowd, a complete team effort, and some one-handed driving skills earned Andrew Carlson the win in PRO TURBO SxS in the 2022 Championship Off-Road series. With a reported 7,500 fans in attendance, ERX Motor Park in Elk River, Minnesota was rocking as teams battled for position in the year-end standings with the season reaching the midway point.
For Carlson Moto, the return to their home track was the elixir they needed to get momentum back on their side. A few weeks prior, Andrew sustained a wrist injury from an unexpected barrel roll in Crandon, resulting in the team having to implement revised controls in their race vehicles, and Andrew having to rely on using one arm while driving.
“I had to battle for that one,” said a pumped-up Carlson after the race. “The team did a lot of work coming out of Crandon and it feels good to get the win after all they did. This (win) was a team effort.”
However, the blazing speed of the Polaris RZR wasn’t enough to repeat the podium effort Saturday after getting collected in the first turn resulting in a flat tire. Still, the win moved Andrew comfortably into the top ten in points at the season midpoint.
In PRO 4, Carlson’s one arm handicap proved to be even more of challenge. “We developed a left-hand shifter that worked well. I was the second fastest qualifier, and I had a great start…but I got caught between gears a few times and that eventually cost me.”
Determined to find a way to overcome the shifting obstacle, the team incorporated further adjustments that proved to work. With Carlson holding a podium position in the closing laps a clutch failure resulted in more heartbreak.
“We’ve got Lena (Wisconsin) coming up in just a couple weeks,” said Andrew. “I should be healed up and close to 100%. Our Polaris RZR loves tight, technical, and rough tracks…and that’s pretty much Lena in a nutshell, so I’m feeling good about our chances.”
Additionally, the Carlson Moto crew has more changes in store for their PRO 4 which, according to head team mechanic Dan Sunderland, should give them additional speed.
The team will return to action at the Dirt City Motorplex in Lena, Wisconsin, July 30 and 31. To stay on top of it, you can watch the racing live via FloRacing or on-demand replays at champoffroad.com.
