I’ve been saying this for years, as much as I admire and respect traditions, I still can’t understand why the guards should wear bearskins in the summer heat? Why not introduce lightweight caps for the summer in some traditional historical style? Could be WWI style caps, could be Wellington army style hats… It would have helped a lot.

That was what I was going to say. They should have some kind of light hat in summer. I love tradition, but these guys fainting in the heat is really sad. Is there anyone who could be petitioned for this? I'm in America so I can't. But there must be someone who could be petitioned to let these military people wear lighter hats and uniforms in summer.

Unfortunately the bearskin does make you sweat buckets and it does squeeze your head even more so if your chin strap hooks are digging in. That’s the number 2 uniform a lot lighter than the full ceremonial uniform red wool tunic and tweed trousers, your boots melt and burn your feet. It’s tough it really is but we chose these regiments were trained for it but sometimes it gets to you

I think it ma be time for some summer uniforms. Drinking water will not stave off heat stroke. Their body needs to be able to sweat through their clothing to cool off. The uniform is soaking up all their sweat. I live in Texas where it will 100 degrees or more everyday until October. Heat stroke can be deadly quickly.

One said that their woollen caps got very hot in the winter and she fashioned a small plastic bag filled and sealed with ice. This bag was then wrapped in a small towel and placed on top of the head. Just cool enough to prevent a headache. I'm sure the King's Guard have done loads of experiments like this but at the end of the day, standing stock still in the heat in a hot hat and the body can do all sorts of things however well you prepare for it.

The uniforms and bearskins are not just the only cause. They don't help, but when I was in the US Marines I stood formations and parades with troops in short sleeved shirts, lightweight trousers, and a lightweight fabric garrison cover. More than one keeled over in summer heat in California even when formed up on grass. My recruit platoon had two go over during the battalion commander's inspection and they were in good shape and wearing lightweight summer uniforms. Probably locked their knees when at attention, that is often a causative factor too. Standing on the asphalt parade deck didn't help either. After the inspection, our drill instructors had us drinking water for a while. I will say that the battalion commander did speed things up after the second recruit went over. He didn't look very comfortable either.

My USAF husband talks about locking knees causing trouble too…said he was taught to keep wiggling his toes and flexing his feet and knees as much as possible when standing for inspection….I guess it helps keep blood circulating and not collecting down in the legs? They 'need' to change the uniforms!
The climate is getting a lot hotter than when I used to work there 30 years ago - and on a hot day back then, I saw a few soldiers really struggling in the heat.
What a lot of people don't know is - if you get heatstroke once (as I once did), you cannot tolerate the same high level of heat again.
I now start to struggle if the temperature closes on 30C (that happened last year, and I spent 2 days sat under trees beside a stream, my feet in the water. I couldn't eat, couldn't sleep, couldn't move. It was awful.
These soldiers don't really need those bearskin hats. They are so heavy for starters. I can't imagine how hot they get.

Also making sure there is a guard rotation schedule to allow drinking water and taking a break with out head gear, can even throw I'm some marching movements and pagentry to hide the fact your just heading off to cool off a bit.

Those left from the 80s and 90s still carry with them some of that drilled into them and that's why this nonsense seems to work and convince people watching on tv. But there are few who really care much about d day sacrifice or some funeral or royal event. Except the miniorty of zealots as in any group.
