  • A tribute to Aida Overton Walker, Queen of the Cakewalk
The following is a short film celebrating the life of Aida Overton Walker, an unsung pioneer in vaudeville and Black musical theater who paved the way for us. Because of her efforts we are able to perform on integrated stages and in front of multicultural audiences. With this project we hope to shine a spotlight on Black performers who have been left in the dark. Please watch, share, like and comment!
    Featuring:
Madelynn Poulson as Aida Overton Walker
    DeAndre' Hicks as George Walker
    Donavon Harbison as Bert Williams
Script, Voice Over, and Choreography By: Madelynn Poulson

Aida Overton Walker is one of my heroes; she was so beautiful and talented. She never let his husbands death or any hardship in life keep her from doing; what she loved. Singing, dancing, acting, hosting shows. She also acted in drag doing some of her husband roles after he became sick. I know she died of kidney disease; but I think the broken heart of losing her husband may have played a role in her death. She was a sex symbol before Madonna, Before Janet, before Josephine Baker, before Tina Turner. She was ahead of ahead of her time for sure. If Aida Overton were white; her perform legacy would be better preserved by the Getty's Museum.

This is super duper super. I believe these were the ilk of performers Al Jolson witnessed in awe in New Orleans and mimicked to such devastatingly huge success! The world loved it!

Al Jolson did blackface to act out racist portrayals of Black folks.
I'm grateful for this video, thank you! Came here through looking up the messed up history of the Cakewalk.

minstrel show was not his unique
creation- it starred innUS before Civil Wat later spread around an& S America & W (&E?) Europe.
      2) Salome is thought to be from
some part of Yemen, which is now Aran, but S Arabia Arabs have mixed +’Kushitic E Africans (?)
at 1 time there was a joint, cross Red Sea country on both shires.
Aida is of course Kushitic Nubi
      heroine of famous Italian opera
      Aida.

Poor comment! Its about celebrating a talented woman's life and it seem to me you should congratulate this woman for having the heart and ability to do just that! Well done Madelynn!

Slap yourself in your mouth. Cute isn't just bone structure or hairstyle. Her smile is cute. Her gown is cute. The way she's so bubbly is cute. How her choreography after her husband died looks like today's "praise dancing" is cute! Don't be shallow! It's not cute!
