The original plot was that Christine was the Phantom’s daughter, but all plot points were deleted in the released film.

But if you go into the film thinking that he's her father, it actually makes a lot of sense.

Yes. There is a cut scene where Christine’s aunt reveals to Nelson Eddy the family connection. Universal cut it because it appeared Erique’s affections to Christine came off a tad unwholesome.

The original would be the Gaston Lerux novel, which never leads anyone to believe that

Phantom: Join me and together we will RULE the Opera...FOREVER!!!
    Christine: I'll...NEVER join you!!!
Phantom: If you only knew the...POWER of the Music Of The Night!!! Madame Giry never told you what happened to your father.
Christine: She told me enough! She told me YOU killed him.
Phantom: No, Christine. I AM your father!
Christine: No, that's NOT true! That's...IMPOSSIBLE!!!
Phantom: Search your feelings, you will know it to be true!
    Christine: NOOO! NOOOOOO!!!!!

      🤣 You are hilarious LOL
I actually wish they hadn’t cut out the Father subplot, as much as I am NOT a fan of how much they butchered the Phantom Story, for the sake of the film itself, cutting it out only hurt the movie more.

@@BookRose-rk1rv Yet they kept Christine's lines about him feeling somewhat familiar. It's very likely that they were conflicted about the story's direction and they settled for a solution somewhere in the middle.

This version would have been better if they would have kept the father-daughter relationship in the film

The relationship reads as kind of weak without it, plus it’s a fun twist of the usual phantom dynamic

I think the important thing to keep in mind with this version is that it is pretty much Phantom of the Opera in name only, even the 1990 Charles Dance Miniseries although it also strayed greatly from Leroux still felt like the story that we all know and love, while this version just doesn’t feel like Phantom to me, and probably a lot of people, as I noticed it doesn’t seem to be as popular as some of the other adaptations amount the Phans.
The two reasons I feel being that The Phantom character Enrique (not Erik in this), was scarred by acid in this, he wasn’t born deformed and this film was the one that started that whole stupid trend of the acid in the face thing
And probably the big reason why it feels so different…his relationship with Christine is changed, well they don’t really have any relationship in this film which is a massive problem, as they hardly interact. She barely knows him so their dynamic is just so weird and awkward. The problem is they cut a massive plot point out where it’s revealed he’s actually her long lost father, and that is why he cares so much about her from afar and secretly pays for her voice lessons (he doesn’t teach her in this).
I think they cut it because it strayed way too far from the classic story, but I wish they would have just left it in because for the sake of the movie itself, cutting it out really made Enrique’s motivation seem very weird and confusing as their was no real relationship or friendship between them.
But it’s still not a bad movie, and I LOVE Susan Fosters Christine (Christine Dubois not Daae here ) she is beautiful, strong, confident, is kind to everyone but not naive…she’s just such a likable Christine, I really found myself caring about what happened to her…plus she’s got a gorgeous voice, and yes that is her really singing in this movie, she was a legit Soprano.
And the two bumbling love interests were a hoot, I think this is the only version of ‘Phantom’ where Christine is like ‘ehh I think I’ll just choose my career instead’ LOL

The moments where the Phantom actually shows up in this film are great, Claude Rains' performance is genuinely unsettling... it's a shame he doesn't really start Phantoming until very late in, and even then he doesn't get to do much.

What a great opportunity for Spiderman and the other two Spideys for the other universes to come and battle against the Phantom!!!!! It would be especially fun seeing them pursing the Phantom in the upper chamber where all those ropes were located!!!!

They never should have given the Dad daughter relationship in this one. What a waste of the original intentions of the author Gaston Leroux, who intended for a romance triangle. If only Nelson Eddy was the Phantom.
