Actually, we have a word that means annoying (naporan/naporna/naporno) though we tend to use boring more often and just deduce from the way we sound that we mean annoying.
Why don't you make video about americans that speak wrong english? For example, they ask: Where are you at?, or: Where is your hat at? Why do you need that AT? Why can't you just say: Where are you? Another example: Why do you americans say: You was wrong, or: They was there.? It should be: You were wrong, or they were there, not WAS!
Nije toliko bitan ni taj srednji rod, ali neke stvari koje je ovdje navela bi rekao samo netko tko pomalo "natuca" engleski jezik i tko zna tek toliko da se jedva sporazumjevai s nekim. Ja osobno nikad nisam čuo da itko ovako priča, ali eto pretpostavljam da su to sigurno ljudi koji jedva išta znaju o engleskom.

Although this is funny, I think it's not right to address it to ALL Croatians. People who are educated and actually know English will never make such mistakes. As for boring and annoying, these are two different words. It's just that we are annoyed by the people who are boring, so we tend to use it in the same context, lol. Literally no one with 2% of english knowledge is doing these mistakes, never in my life have I heard: cook a coffee, he for non living thing, or someone using take instead of give or vv, those two have two different meaning in all languages, and boring means that someone is not being interesting, and annoying is someone who is getting on your nerves
Thank you for that lovely rant, although I noticed you made atleast 5 mistakes in it. Yes, croatians have a habit of saying these things. I've lived here for the past 24 years, and notice them all the time. To be fair, though, alot of americans make many mistakes while either speaking or writting in english; I correct my american family often. Writting in english is difficult; there are rules, but they have exceptions. This is do to the history of the english language, which, if you are interested in that, can be found on youtube. That's true. I have never heard someone saying "thinking on you". That's basic knowledge of english language. Still, us who are not using english on a daily basis, yes, we make mistakes, but I believe that someone to whom english is a native language still can understand us well enough. Cute video tho
Boring can also be dosadno , like: it's so boring ( kako je dosadno ) or it's so boring today (kako je dosadno danas ) or even: i'm so bored ( tako mi je dosadno ) :)
Yes, think that she shouldn't generalize about Croatians or anyone. You should put title: Things my Croatian friends Say in English That Are INCORRECT. Its the same if I said: Americans use math in this way, but its incorrect. example: 2 x 5 = 7. They just add things together. NO, some just don't know math.
But in croatian language, that rule doesn't apply because in Croatian language nouns have genders, every noun has a gender, male, female and neutral and the only way to know which noun belongs to which gender is my simply memorizing it
Mostly it is really easy to tell the gender: almost all female nouns end in A, and almost all nouns ending in A are female; practically all neutral nouns end in E or O (except AUTO=a car, which is male!!!), all other nouns are male. There are few exceptions, but not that many. The rule does not apply to proper names.
They have gengers and u say it correct but it's too many words to memorise is it male, female or neutral. Here is trick to know that without memorising. Car (auto) is male. How to know that? Try put Ovaj(for he), ova (for she) and ovo (for it). Like ovaj auto (this car), ova majica (this T- shirt). We don't have much things in neutral. Even water has genger (she).

Have you noticed how many of Croats can communicate with you in English? Yes, it may be bit funny for you, but we learnd it in school. Many of us didn't have that experience to learn it in UK or USA so we may not be as fluent. Still, I'm sure you can understand and I think no one would mind if you correct them. 😊
My classmate never went to an English speaking country and learns in school and from movies like all of us ig but her accent is really good and also her grammar.

Možda imamo kompleks manje vrijednosti zbog naših roditelja ili zato što čitamo kako o nama pričaju drugi "napredniji" narodi. Sad nedavno mi je jedna osoba iz Amerike napisala da je moja zemlja shithole. Oprosti na izrazu, ali samo prenosim ono što sam pročitala. To mi je rekla nakon što sam joj ja pokušala objasniti da nije sve napravljeno i izmišljeno u Americi dajući joj primjere iz Europe i Azije. Neki još misle da mi još uvijek živimo u srednjem vijeku, a samo oni u modernom svijetu. Kad napravimo pogrešku u pisanju na engleskom optužuju nas da je naš engleski broken, a oni do 90' nisu ni znali da postojimo. Neki misle da nam je kukasti križ simbol. Ja znam da moja zemlja nije najbolja, ali kako mogu biti tako nekulturni i vrijeđati druge zemlje samo zato što su manje razvijene.

Angela, I also don't make any of above mistakes. I am not sure why some people might have difficulty to distinguish boring vs annoying, or teach vs learn... My problem is misplacement of "the" and "a". I just cannot comprehend it. When I was in grad school (I live in the USA) I had to use help from the writing center to help me with papers and to fix "the" and "a" errors. It looks like this is common to native speakers of Slavic languages.
@@margrg21 yes, articles are problem for me too. I guess it's because it's something we don't have in our language, so we have to learn it and can't really "feel" it. At least that's how it is for me.
@@margrg21 I made some mistakes. For your problem with "the" and "a/an". When u mention some word for a first time u use "the". For every other time of mentioning that word u use "a/an".

Dear Kaleigh; I was brushing my hair today thinking on you when suddenly notification alert popped up on my phone. It was about your new video. I was so excited that I ran over to a kitchen to cook me some coffee so I can watch your video and enjoy. Out of excitement I almost stir my coffee with a brush so I put her away. Meanwhile, my phone rang again. It was my friend tellin' me that his wife is taking a birth! I was so happy for him and since I know how excited he is I reminded him not to forget to tell a doctor to take him a receipt once they check out of the hospital. Yeah yeah yeah he said but BRO this is my first child,I know nothing about diapers and stuff and you know how I feel about baby's cry. It's so boring sometimes! What am I going to do?? I said calm down brother,turn on your cigarette & relax. Your wife will learn you everything you need and look on the bright side of it. From now on,you'll always have something to do and with all these things on your mind,you'll never be annoyed. After he calm down I told him that I have to go cause Kaleigh's new video just got out and I wanna turn on my cigarette and have some coffee on peace. Hahaha I love this video :) when I lived in US, people would sometimes get offended when I gave compliment to their children: "OMG, it is so beautiful" "It is so smart", cause in Croatian "dijete" is neuter so therefore the "It" :)
HAHA I always hear "I will think on you" and one time my Croatian boyfriend said to me "stop stepping on my sentences" after I interrupted him. I also find that sometimes I'm starting to talk in English in a Croatian accent sometimes. Ajmeeee! :P
Actually, we *brew* the coffee. But that's too advanced level of English for most here and confusion is furthered by having only one word in Croatian for three different words in English. To cook, to boil, to brew - all equals "kuhati" (pronounced: koo-ha-tee) in Croatian, which we then simply translate to English "cook". Many times it works, many times probably it doesn't work so well.
Kaleigh, My favorite one was when I was in restaurant in Split. They had meal on menu called hemedex..... I red ingredients and was ham and eggs ham &eggs = hemedex
These are funny but also useful and educational observations Kaleigh! :) Those mistakes are made by people who don't know English on a deeper level, so they translate directly from how things are spoken in Croatian. Yeah, it is funny with the word 'ugasiti' which has multiple meanings in Croatian, it is used to turn/switch off devices but also to extinguish burning stuff, but I've never hard someone saying turn off the cigarette in English because of that haha For the word 'annoying' more proper word in Croatian would be the word 'živcirati', meaning someone is irritating my nerves but yeah, for annoying people more often we use the same word as for boredom, which is 'dosada'

6:33 - 7:40 you see, Im from Croatia, and we acutualy have a phrase for "annoying" and its "Ideš mi na živce" and in direct translation, it would mean "you are getting on my nerves" so we have a phrase for that ^-^ Edit: You just made my day, thank you for the heart on my comment ^-^ ♡
I've never met any of these examples except with people who's level of English is from primary school. People mostly don't care about foreign languages. They just want to finish school and forget it ASAP. That's sad actually. I use English daily and I keep learning..

In English, boats/ships and cars are often referred to as female, especially by men. It's not grammatically correct, but it's used so often that native English speakers are fine with it.
When I first saw a video of yours I was in Argentina, my home country, and now I'm watching you from Croatia!! I might end up teaching english/spanish here cause I don't know how to do anything else XD so this video is not only funny is useful. Anyway great content, liked and subscribed! ;)
Actually, in French everything is only "he" or "she". We do have "it", even for living things. E.g. pače (a duckling), mače (a kitten), dijete (a child)... And there are exceptions to the rule for the nouns ending with "-a", notably "tata" ("Daddy") and some names like Andrija ("Andrew"). And in English, ships are often referred to as "she", aren't they? :) "I'll take you this receipt." might come from "Uzet ću ti račun." which could (most likely, considering the bad English translation) mean "I'll take this receipt for you." or "I'll pick this receipt up and bring it to you.". You mentioned the proscription as well. The Croatian word for is "recept" and that seems to add to the confusion. "Čujemo se." is actually literally translated as "We *are hearing* each other." although it refers to the future. Even more confusing? :) It's a catchphrase, like English "Catch you later!", and isn't supposed to be translated literally. One thing I occasionally hear is people using the word "glass" every time they actually mean a "cup". E.g. "Can you please hand me those plastic glasses?".

I am from Croatia, and lived in the US for 3.5 years. I can very much relate. My English has gotten better throughout the years. However, I still find myself mixing some expressions up, such as "Open the light.", instead of "Turn the light on.". It's definitely because of the same word in Croatian. So funny!
I laughed so hard during this video cuz everything you said is so true 😂 Also I've been in situations where people were saying "I have 24 years" when refering to their age I'm from Croatia and even I know that's totally incorrect! Here we say : "imam 24 godine" so when the verb "imati" is translated to english it's translated as "to have" many people don't notice this and translate it directly as "i have 24 years" instead of saying "i am 24 years old"
We also have an it in Croatian however it doesn't only apply to inanimate objects because our nouns have predetermined genders. For example: Ono stablo, Ono dijete...

Ok so boring and annoying in croatian can be 2 different words too, for exaple boring can be translated as dosadan and annoying can be translated as naporan. P. S. Also I noticed that many people will say I'm boring instead of I'm bored.

Hi Kaleigh, there's something I'm bit curious about.. at the beginning of the video you mentioned that for everything not living (people & animals) pronoun IT should be used, but there's also one thing where I noticed people use different pronoun. Do you know why different nationalities (I lived abroad and noticed my colleagues in different countries) use pronoun SHE for vessels? I assume it has to do with the fact that they also use 'big lady' or similar for vessels and say: 'Our lady berthed in this and this port yesterday..''but maybe you would know better :)
Love this video! We have certain phrases that we are trying to translate to English using common sense. As a Croatian living in Ireland, they were also surprised by the way we do it but they also loved it. 😀
My Croatian friend makes occasional and insignificant mistakes, but when writing a paper she has a lot of problems with "a" and "the". She understands the logic of "the" being specific and "a" being any, but for whatever reason this is a constant problem when writing.
What about ships?...They are inanimate object but called she ;)

When Croatians speak English they think in Croatian. That seems to be the problem. I got much better in English when I started to think in English when I speak English. Maybe you could get better at Croatian same way.
I am beginning principal photography on my short film next week. My grandmother was born in Zagreb, and to honor her I’d like to speak English with a Croatian accent in my role. And thoughts and tips greatly appreciated!

I love the video. I'm also trying to learn Croatian too. And us english speaking Americans and Canadians refer to cars, ships, and other vehicles as "her", "she", and "hers".
We also have double negations which are illogical. For example: "Nisam nikome rekao". Even worse the quadruple ones: "Nisam nikada nikome nista rekao". In english one would say: "I have not told anyone". Literraly translated in Croatian: "Nisam svakome rekao", which in fact is more logical.
Great video, and thank you for bringing us back to Earth...English is easy to get into, not so easy to master. Btw, ships are also referred to as "she" in English. And not all nouns that end on -a in Croatian are of the feminine gender. For example, "tata" and "deda"!

You have mixed croatian "put out" and "turn off". When someone tells you "ugasi cigaretu" it literally means "put out" your cigarette. It is when someone tells you "ugasi svjetlo" actually means to put out the light wich has stuck since time when candles were used. Correct would be "isključi svjetlo"
In what part of Croatia did u live? Im Croatian and i’m not saying anything from the above so it’s quite strange you have this kind of experience 🤷🏼♀️

@@melaniay5521 Actually, if you are not native speaker of Croatian, you wouldn't know if ovaj auto or ovo auto is correct, or ovaj stol or ova stol.

Many of us didn't have that experience to learn it in UK or USA so we may not be as fluent. Still, I'm sure you can understand and I think no one would mind if you correct them. 😊
My classmate never went to an English speaking country and learns in school and from movies like all of us ig but her accent is really good and also her grammar.

Možda imamo kompleks manje vrijednosti zbog naših roditelja ili zato što čitamo kako o nama pričaju drugi "napredniji" narodi. Sad nedavno mi je jedna osoba iz Amerike napisala da je moja zemlja shithole. Oprosti na izrazu, ali samo prenosim ono što sam pročitala. To mi je rekla nakon što sam joj ja pokušala objasniti da nije sve napravljeno i izmišljeno u Americi dajući joj primjere iz Europe i Azije. Neki još misle da mi još uvijek živimo u srednjem vijeku, a samo oni u modernom svijetu. Kad napravimo pogrešku u pisanju na engleskom optužuju nas da je naš engleski broken, a oni do 90' nisu ni znali da postojimo. Neki misle da nam je kukasti križ simbol. Ja znam da moja zemlja nije najbolja, ali kako mogu biti tako nekulturni i vrijeđati druge zemlje samo zato što su manje razvijene.

Angela, I also don't make any of above mistakes. I am not sure why some people might have difficulty to distinguish boring vs annoying, or teach vs learn... My problem is misplacement of "the" and "a". I just cannot comprehend it. When I was in grad school (I live in the USA) I had to use help from the writing center to help me with papers and to fix "the" and "a" errors. It looks like this is common to native speakers of Slavic languages.
@@margrg21 yes, articles are problem for me too. I guess it's because it's something we don't have in our language, so we have to learn it and can't really "feel" it. At least that's how it is for me.
@@margrg21 I made some mistakes. For your problem with "the" and "a/an". When u mention some word for a first time u use "the". For every other time of mentioning that word u use "a/an".

Dear Kaleigh; I was brushing my hair today thinking on you when suddenly notification alert popped up on my phone. It was about your new video. I was so excited that I ran over to a kitchen to cook me some coffee so I can watch your video and enjoy. Out of excitement I almost stir my coffee with a brush so I put her away. Meanwhile, my phone rang again. It was my friend tellin' me that his wife is taking a birth! I was so happy for him and since I know how excited he is I reminded him not to forget to tell a doctor to take him a receipt once they check out of the hospital. Yeah yeah yeah he said but BRO this is my first child,I know nothing about diapers and stuff and you know how I feel about baby's cry. It's so boring sometimes! What am I going to do?? I said calm down brother,turn on your cigarette & relax. Your wife will learn you everything you need and look on the bright side of it. From now on,you'll always have something to do and with all these things on your mind,you'll never be annoyed. After he calm down I told him that I have to go cause Kaleigh's new video just got out and I wanna turn on my cigarette and have some coffee on peace. Hahaha I love this video :) when I lived in US, people would sometimes get offended when I gave compliment to their children: "OMG, it is so beautiful" "It is so smart", cause in Croatian "dijete" is neuter so therefore the "It" :)
HAHA I always hear "I will think on you" and one time my Croatian boyfriend said to me "stop stepping on my sentences" after I interrupted him. I also find that sometimes I'm starting to talk in English in a Croatian accent sometimes. Ajmeeee! :P
I get it for a plant, but I don't know anyone that speaks like that. I think its just improper English, not Croatian way.
Actually, we *brew* the coffee. But that's too advanced level of English for most here and confusion is furthered by having only one word in Croatian for three different words in English.
To cook, to boil, to brew - all equals "kuhati" (pronounced: koo-ha-tee) in Croatian, which we then simply translate to English "cook". Many times it works, many times probably it doesn't work so well.

These are funny but also useful and educational observations Kaleigh! :) Those mistakes are made by people who don't know English on a deeper level, so they translate directly from how things are spoken in Croatian.
Yeah, it is funny with the word 'ugasiti' which has multiple meanings in Croatian, it is used to turn/switch off devices but also to extinguish burning stuff, but I've never hard someone saying turn off the cigarette in English because of that haha
For the word 'annoying' more proper word in Croatian would be the word 'živcirati', meaning someone is irritating my nerves but yeah, for annoying people more often we use the same word as for boredom, which is 'dosada'

I've never met any of these examples except with people who's level of English is from primary school. People mostly don't care about foreign languages. They just want to finish school and forget it ASAP. That's sad actually. I use English daily and I keep learning..

In English, boats/ships and cars are often referred to as female, especially by men. It's not grammatically correct, but it's used so often that native English speakers are fine with it.

Actually, in French everything is only "he" or "she". We do have "it", even for living things.
E.g. pače (a duckling), mače (a kitten), dijete (a child)...
And there are exceptions to the rule for the nouns ending with "-a", notably "tata" ("Daddy") and some names like Andrija ("Andrew").
And in English, ships are often referred to as "she", aren't they? :)
"I'll take you this receipt." might come from "Uzet ću ti račun." which could (most likely, considering the bad English translation) mean "I'll take this receipt for you." or "I'll pick this receipt up and bring it to you.". You mentioned the proscription as well. The Croatian word for is "recept" and that seems to add to the confusion.
"Čujemo se." is actually literally translated as "We *are hearing* each other." although it refers to the future. Even more confusing? :)
It's a catchphrase, like English "Catch you later!", and isn't supposed to be translated literally.
One thing I occasionally hear is people using the word "glass" every time they actually mean a "cup". E.g. "Can you please hand me those plastic glasses?".

I am from Croatia, and lived in the US for 3.5 years. I can very much relate. My English has gotten better throughout the years. However, I still find myself mixing some expressions up, such as "Open the light.", instead of "Turn the light on.". It's definitely because of the same word in Croatian. So funny!

I'm from Croatia and even I know that's totally incorrect! Here we say : "imam 24 godine" so when the verb "imati" is translated to english it's translated as "to have" many people don't notice this and translate it directly as "i have 24 years" instead of saying "i am 24 years old"
what does "bok" signify, and then there is "bog?"
We also have an it in Croatian however it doesn't only apply to inanimate objects because our nouns have predetermined genders.
For example: Ono stablo, Ono dijete...

Ok so boring and annoying in croatian can be 2 different words too, for exaple boring can be translated as dosadan and annoying can be translated as naporan.

Just for the info, most Croats are educated and know English language and they rarely literally translate some words. But I agree with you, it's cute to hear non native speaker of some language to speak that actual language. Like when Americans are trying to speak Croatian or German. Especially the pronantiuation of "special" letters,like č,ć,đ,dž,ž,lj and nj

Hi Kaleigh, there's something I'm bit curious about.. at the beginning of the video you mentioned that for everything not living (people & animals) pronoun IT should be used, but there's also one thing where I noticed people use different pronoun. Do you know why different nationalities (I lived abroad and noticed my colleagues in different countries) use pronoun SHE for vessels? I assume it has to do with the fact that they also use 'big lady' or similar for vessels and say: 'Our lady berthed in this and this port yesterday..''but maybe you would know better :)
Love this video! We have certain phrases that we are trying to translate to English using common sense. As a Croatian living in Ireland, they were also surprised by the way we do it but they also loved it. 😀
Also words "teach" and "learn" in Croatian are not the same and we do make distinctions :)
My Croatian friend makes occasional and insignificant mistakes, but when writing a paper she has a lot of problems with "a" and "the". She understands the logic of "the" being specific and "a" being any, but for whatever reason this is a constant problem when writing.
What about ships?...They are inanimate object but called she ;)

But, the most important is that we do, somehow, understand each other 😁.

When Croatians speak English they think in Croatian. That seems to be the problem. I got much better in English when I started to think in English when I speak English. Maybe you could get better at Croatian same way.

And us english speaking Americans and Canadians refer to cars, ships, and other vehicles as "her", "she", and "hers".
We also have double negations which are illogical.
For example: "Nisam nikome rekao".
Even worse the quadruple ones: "Nisam nikada nikome nista rekao".
In english one would say: "I have not told anyone".
Literraly translated in Croatian: "Nisam svakome rekao", which in fact is more logical.
Actually if you translate croatian 'nisam nikada nikome rekao' literally it would be 'i have never told no one' 😁

You have mixed croatian "put out" and "turn off". When someone tells you "ugasi cigaretu" it literally means "put out" your cigarette. It is when someone tells you "ugasi svjetlo" actually means to put out the light wich has stuck since time when candles were used. Correct would be "isključi svjetlo"
