      I had not been to Tewkesbury for quite sometime (it is not a town I know well) - I hope to return after I have completed The Severn Way to cover it in more detail.
      Glad you enjoyed the video and thank you for watching and commenting.

    That was a delightful walk to Tewkesbury, which - apart from the incessant road traffic - is a really marvellous old town full of interest. I hope to visit later this year via Ashchurch, where I gather, there are reasonable bus connections. Pity there are none to Upton, which as you point out, is not far across the Severn. Looking forward to your half-marathon to Gloucester.

    • @westcountrywanderings
      @westcountrywanderings  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you Malcolm - yes, it is difficult filming in towns, particularly because of the level of traffic noise, which, I think seems to be getting louder, due to changes to tyre and wheel design and sizes, as well as sheer traffic volume.
      I walked to Ashchurch because I did not know where the busses leave from, but I know they head towards the very large suburb of Tewkesbury (bigger than the town now!) called Northway; I think most if not all those services call at the railway station in Ashchurch too - I will certainly be looking to catch the bus to Tewkesbury from the station before I start the next leg.
      This was my first visit to Tewkesbury for very many years, and also a town I do not know well at all.
      Yes, it is such a shame that Upton has such a poor bus service from all directions (well, none from most!) as it would benefit the town in terms of increasing visitors but reducing traffic in Upton's narrow streets.
      Thanks so much for watching and commenting Malcolm.
      Take care,
      Paul 👍🙂

    Good Morning Paul Greetings from Poland.
    Marvellous video. Beautifully photographed with a superb commentary. 6 miles today but 6 very interesting miles. Plenty of open space along the river bank with big skies above.
    Tewkesbury is gorgeous. Last there in 2010 whilst on a holiday back to the UK. One of my favourite towns also on Parkinsons Walks too. Many tutor buildings to look at and the abbey is fabulous. Would love a visit with Westcountry Wanderings too.

      Yes, despite having a family connection there, Tewkesbury is not a town I am familiar with at all - I know Upton better. I think it was possibly only my second visit. I hope to show the inside of the Abbey next time.
      Glad you enjoyed the walk and the video.
      Yes, the sky felt so big there! Odd thing for me to say but that is how it looked.
      Hope you have a great week - I am off to film some steam trains!
      Take care,
      Paul. 😊👍

    I really enjoyed this Paul. Very lovely scenery. Funny you mentioned about the sky. I had subconsciously been aware of a lot of sky before you mentioned it. I loved the sketch you did! Thanks for showing us around Tewksbury too! I have not been there so it was good to see!

      Glad you enjoyed the video - yes, it was odd, the sky seemed so big! 🌥️☁️
      Yes, I saw the motorway's viaduct and I immediately thought of Jon, and his excellent channel. I then thought how I could do it - it was seeing that dead tree which gave me the idea to split and crop the screen across it, so I appear twice as two separate people in the same frame. It was tricky to edit though!
      Tewkesbury is lovely - I had not been there for sometime, and I think I will return to cover it more in depth after I have finished The Severn Way. On to Gloucester next!
      Thanks Louise! 👍😊

    It’s so rare that I know and have visited a town on your walks but this is it!! I always feel sad when I do visit because of the horrific battle but also because I usually walk up the town to the theatre and remember Eric Morecambe who collapsed there.
    I love the colourful medieval banners that each building displays- it makes Tewkesbury so special. And we always went to eat in the Bell Stayed there once! It’s changed hands since we were there.I’m so glad you showed it and that you have a family connection.Thank you for a lovely walk.

      Yes, I will return to Tewkesbury at the start of the next video and I will also do a stand alone video of Tewkesbury after I have completed the Way.
      It is indeed a lovely town, but one I don't know that well, but I hope to get to know better.
      I really enjoyed this section but I am mentally sorting myself to prepare me for the next (comparatively long) section. However I have just heard of a lady on the radio who is planning to walk from Taunton to Bridgwater along the canal, and back, twice, in one day - 50 miles! Raising money in aid of Somerset Air Ambulance. Makes mine a comparative stroll in the park!
      Thanks again, take care, Paul 🙂👍

    I think the boat with the tables is used for river trips.I think the term lammas meadow means that stock were not allowed to graze before Lammas Day as the grass was grown for hay until then.The lakes shown about 19.30 were dug out as a flood prevention scheme.The Mythe Bridge is listed as it was built by Thomas Telford. From that bridge you can see where Severn Trent Water takes water from the river and pumps it to the to the resevoirs on Chuchdown Hill which supplies Gloucester. I've been trying to persuade Thames Water to do something similar because by pumping water up a few more feet it is all downhill to London. It would save the destruction of the internationally rare chalk streams.

    • @westcountrywanderings
      @westcountrywanderings  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That's an excellent point John!
      Severn Trent Water doesn't want you filming anywhere near Mythe Water Treatment works - they were following me when they saw my cameras! Very, very high security there! I think they have had issues in the past. It is a huge site.
      I enjoyed this section of the walk and this is the first time I had been to Tewkesbury for many years - a town I don't know that well, although family connections as you saw.
      Thanks so much, take care,
      Paul

    Lovely walk Paul. So much of interest and once again, a good choice of music. I've never heard an explanation of why you sometimes refer to the Severn, as Sabrina.

    • @westcountrywanderings
      @westcountrywanderings  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you Lionel and Mary. Yes, I did explain the long version as to why the River Severn was called Sabrina way back in episode one of the Severn Way (entitled 'Looking For The Source' - you can find it in the Severn Way video playlist on my channel, and it will appear at the top of the list). That seems a long time ago now, well it was nearly a year ago!
      Head to that video if you want the full version as to the reason why, but, briefly, it is because Hafren is the Welsh Goddess of the river Severn, and her Latin name is Sabrina. In the country of Wales, the River Severn is called Afon Hafren. Hope this helps! Take care, Paul.

    Excellent video, Paul.
    Those wind pumps reminded me of westerns, long before I saw one here. They often showed them creaking and squeaking away on remote cattle ranches - for atmosphere, no doubt.
    They’re included on OS maps, of course, as useful landmarks. I looked for yours and it appears to be superimposed on the boundary line running down the river and was difficult to find. The cartographer was playing Where’s Wally? on that one. At least it’s there!

    Hi Paul, That was a great section to have walked. Those Swans at the start were lined up as if they were in the fleet review!! The flour mills in Tewkesbury are enormous, I'm sure I remember them from one of Ron's films. As Diana has mentioned, sad to think that Eric Morcambe collapsed there, wikipedia tells me that he had done 6 encores that night
    You woke me up with that sketch half way through, and very funny it was too, really well put together, well done!! I will have to look at the auto-schenanigens channel.
    I really remember the motorway development in the 1970s there were lots of parts half built so for example we had to travel through the centre of Southampton to head off to the West Country. In fact Dorset is still poorly served by the motorway network.
    I vividly remember the construction of A3M cutting through the chalk of Portsdown Hill, don't remember quite so well the construction of the M275 into Portsmouth they had allsorts to do there as they reclaimed the upper part of the harbour.
    Thanks for explaining the familiy memories of the wind pump and the Hotel.
    Great video well done!!

      Yes, very hot here today - hottest day of the year so far +32 deg C. Hopefully it will be cooler before I get to Devon - I want to do some coast walks, but I can't do walking videos in this heat during the daytime. However, I did do a shorter Cotswold Walk for a video very early this morning - I was home by 10am (I got up at 4.30am).
      Yes, you may enjoy Jon's AutoShennanigans channel - he is entertaining, even though I am no fan of cars or motorways, and he comes up with real nuggets of information.
      I seem to remember a huge protest when the M3 was extended south and sliced through a hill - is that Portsdown Hill? Sorry, I don't know the area at all.
      Eric Morcambe was a genius, but also a workaholic. So sad, but I guess he probably would have wanted to go that way doing what he enjoyed.
      Always a pleasure to read your comments David.
      Take care,
      Paul

      @@westcountrywanderings Wow, 32°, that's hotter than here, it's been quite cool since the storms last weekend. It won't last but the sun has clearly changed position and the nights are drawing in.
      4:30 that really is an early start, the silence must have been wonderful. I'm sure you made the most of it.
      I think the protest is likely to have been about the Winchester bypass on the M3, I do remember how it was before, a very dangerous stretch of road. I think there was talk of tunneling through but in the end they did cut a huge swathe through the chalk. Much later the A3 was tunnelled through the devil's punchbowl and so I've read they will be tunneling under Stonehenge
      Of course the Winchester bypass motorway also cut through the end of the old route of the Watercress line.
      I always enjoy taking the time to write my comments and appreciate your replies them and to all the other comments as well.

    Hi Paul, Yes Tewkesbury was one of my favourite places when walking up the Severn last year - it was around the early May bank holiday & there was a parade through the town along to the fields to the rear of the Abbey. Hopefully you’ll be walking the Ham where both the Avon & Mill Avon meet the Severn together with a lesser known river the Swilgate. The view across the Weir was also stunning 💪🏻

    • @westcountrywanderings
      @westcountrywanderings  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you.
      Despite having family connections there, I am not familar with Tewkesbury at all.
      There were more medieval buildings than I remember - probably my first visit there for about forty years.
      I will try and explore 'Severn Ham' (where the three rivers join, and just the other side of the footbridge covered in flowers that I showed) as much as I can - but there is a lot to fit into the next episode getting to Gloucester, and getting home from there.
      Thanks so much,
      Cheers,
      Paul

    • @westcountrywanderings

      Thank you! Unfortunately, there is no path or right of way that follows the River Avon along its entire navigable length from Stratford to Tewkesbury, so I could not do it as long project like with the Severn Way. However, there is a section that can be done out of Tewkesbury up to Bredon and a couple of bits in South Warwickshire, which I do hope to do at some future point. Glad you enjoyed this leg of the Way.
      Cheers!
